  1. Okay The cams and cam plates are in the correct head.Thank you guys for guiding me thru the process. Have new problem though. When I torque the rocker arms assemblies to 18 ft.lbs. The cam shaft is moving freely. The front exhaust rocker arm gets stuck on the assemble and wont rotate . The rear exhaust rocker and front and rear intake rockers seem to move freely. Torqued down the torques plus and Allen head bolts and now all rockers are moving freely on rocker arms, but the cam shaft is turning hard, Must be overlooking something simple.
  2. Putting 06 Impreza heads back together. When cam plate is torqued the cam shaft wont turn. Must have switched a cam shaft or cam plate. The #s one the cam plates is DS-07011A and the other one is 70-070110B. Don't see any #s on cam shafts. Is that enough information to sort out which cam and cam plate goes together, or is it back to the machine shop.
  3. I misspoke. Its the avls system rather than the vvt syystem Spun bearing in 2008 ej 25 with avls. Need to remove metal shavings from avls unit on heads. Can it be cleaned out with the avls solenoid connected to the base. If the solenoid needs to be removed from base, how does it disconnect from base.
  4. Thanks for the reassuring information. I had never seen a dropped guide like that before.
  5. Yes I've never seen a valve guide like that. Noticed that head had a Felpro head gasket and other side original head gasket. So something happened. Overheating sounds like the probable culprit. Ive got a good set of heads to put on if necessary.
  6. Can't get a good picture because of the angle/lighting but on one of the exhaust ports all you can see is the guide. On all other exhaust ports you see the nub of the valve guide and then the valve stem. Can this guide come completely out of the seat and wreck my engine?
  7. I pulled the exhaust away from the bottom of heads. I can look right up the exhaust ports. Never seen exhaust guides drop before. Thought I was doing a simple valve lash adjustment and now Ive got to pull the heads, replace guides or get a different set of heads. I will ad some pics to my original post when i get the lighting and and camera angle right.
  8. Disconnected the exhaust from heads to raise engine while adjustind valve lash. The exhaust were at .013 instead of .010. I looked in the exhaust ports and the valve guides have dropped due to carbon build up. Does the dropped guide make the ticking noise, or it just the valve lash out of spec. making the ticking?
  9. I was using a Youtube video from South Main Auto as a guide. I just posted the link with my original question. At 20 mins. into the video, Eric O is adjusting the valves. His premise seems to be that any where on the cams that the valves are closed is a good place to set the lash. Is that inncorrect? Also posted a pic of TDC for the four drivers side cam position from FSM.
  10. Got valve cover off. Have the drivers side cam timing mark at 6pm. That should have all the valves closed. The subframe is in the way of adjusting the exhaust valves. I will be be jacking up engine tomorrrow.
  11. I meant to say best procdure due to space constraints. Is it easier to do with motor mount bolts off and enginge lifted on floor jack. Or is it no big deal to do as engine sits normally.
  12. Looking for the best procedure for doing valve adjustment with engine in car on 2005 Impreza. Looks and sounds like head gaskets were done without doing proper valve adjustment.
  13. Got the three piece 02 removal tool from Orielys. The socket fits the sensor, but there's no room to get breaker bar on socket, Theres got to be another way. Pulled the y pipes down from the heads. That was the only way I could access the 02 sensor.
  14. Thanks for the advise and explanation. Was hoping to go through the side by taking the passenger tire off.
  15. Yes Theres a 02 wrench kit at the auto parts store containing the wrench similar to your first picture, that I can "borrow". That means you buy it and if you bring it back in 48 hours they reverse the charge. However the problem is access to the 02 sensor with the 02 sensor removal kit.
  16. Anybody remove the front 02 sensor from an 05 Impreza RS. It looks like from underneath car the y pipe would have to be dropped to get to it. I'm trying to avoid getting under car. Theres a video of it being removed by taking off the front passenger tire. Unfortunately the video is on a 2005 STI which looks like the sensor is on the side of exhaust. The 2005 RS front 02 sensor is on the front of exhaust. Access is blocked by the cv axle from the top and from underneath.
  17. Looking for instructions to install intake rocker arm on a 2008 ej25 head with vvt. The FSM is vague. Just talks about using specialized Subaru tools. Here are pictures of installation instructions, intake rocker assembly and head. I think the spring on the rocker assembly needs to be disconnected and then reconnected to get the rockers in the correct position. The instructions are not clear how to do it. I found the answer with this great Brianmobile1 YouTube video
  18. Greatly appreciated. Having the correct info.and not guessing is the way to go. Where could I find complete pdfs of Subaru of other years ? Im working with 2000 plus Subarus for retirement hobby and would like to get a reliable souce to go to instead of frantically searching when I neeed info, like I do now.
  19. Thats a great site. I dont see cam hold down plate bolt torque though. Thought that might have changed with the VVT on the 08 heads.
  20. Anybody know the headbolt and cam hold down plate bolts torque specs and sequence for 2008 ej253 heads. I think its different from the standard pre 2006 specs.
  21. Just bought 09 Legacy with spun bearing. I have a low mile 04 ej25. Plan to use the 09 heads on the 04 motor. Should that work. Haven't put variable valve timing heads on block that came without VVT heads before. So I guess my question is an ej251 block compatible with ej253 vvt heads.
  22. Cleaning up the heads on ej25. I know I need to keep track of which valve goes where. Are the retainer and springs ineterchangable, or do they need to stay with valve they were originally on?
  23. Yes. Just found that thread. I do Subarus for fun. Don't mind spending money for one thats easy to use.
