  1. If your car is lifted and you frequently drive alone, then there is the possibility that your body weight is just enough difference to cause the passenger side to be out of acceptable angle limits for axle operation. Your weight may be enough to actually flatten the angle of the driver side axle operation while increasing the passenger side angle of operation. Continuous operation at or beyond the specified angle limits will cause premature failure of the axle.
  2. If there is no noise then what is the type of failure that is occurring ?
  3. ditto on the starter contacts. If your battery is good, then you have described the early signs of a failing starter. It may start occasionally if you try long enough but better to go ahead and make the repairs or you will find yourself stuck somewhere. I couldn't find any local so I had to order mine from the dealer and it took a few days. Cost me about $20
  4. If the axle nut is torqued back on to spec then the axle is pressed into proper position. Is the axle making noise after installation ? If so, then it may help to "overtorque" the nut to press the axle in tighter. I had to do that with mine. I torqued the nut to spec then moved the nut more to achieve alignment for the pin. Then I torqued the nut one more notch. That eliminated the noise problem for me. Others have recommended this solution and it is likely due to the fact that these cars are just old.
  5. Is the air filter clear ? Make sure the spark is good at the plugs.
  6. backfiring is typically a timing issue. I'd check that first.
  7. Try tapping/rapping on the fuel pump with something like the handle of a screwdriver, and see if there is any improvement. If yes, then the pump should be replaced. If no, then the problem is yet to be discovered.
  8. if it dies suddenly it is likely an electrical problem, possibly a wire grounding out somewhere intermittently. if it does a hurt dance then dies it is likely a failing fuel pump that should be replaced.
  9. Absolutely unbelievable ! Well done ! If I'd been the owner of that car with so much body damage I am certain I would have junked the car and moved on. Your patience and skills are truly admirable.
  10. Thanks. That works, but surprisingly when I did a search (no 24hours filter) it did not appear in my results. very odd.....:-\
  11. Instructions were followed. Been trying all week. Only get 4+/- pages of results from google, none worked. I also tried Bing and Yahoo. Same result, none working .
  12. this little "free vin check" trick has been spelled out all over the internet at numerous car forums. I'm afraid it's a closed door now.
  13. When I replaced the axle on my '90 Loyale I had all kinds of squeeking and clicking noises. After much fretting and fussing I found that over-torqueing the axle nut finally resolved the problem. I first torqued it to spec, then a bit more to align the castle nut to the next available notch, then torqued it to one more notch over. I then drove it for a while and it has been just fine since. About 1000 miles so far and all is OK.
  14. Mine does that too. Seems to be normal for these old cars.
  15. If my fuel pump was leaking, I would replace it.
  16. I get 20 - 22 mpg. That's about normal for these old cars.
  17. Excellent post. Thanks for making the effort to document and share. I will be trying this myself as I hate the constant oil on the bottom of the engine and I have always suspected it was from the oil pump or oil cooler.
  18. Okay so it does crank. If the car did a little hurt dance when "it just dead stopped", then the problem is likely the fuel pump has gone out. This is a common problem and easily fixed by just replacing the pump.
  19. "...arent sure whats wrong at this point...it just dead stopped" typical of an electrical problem, likely a short or blown fuse somewhere. "turn the key and... silence" check all fuses and try to trace why starter isn't turning.
  20. The auto parts stores can usually do a free diagnostics check for you. Try more than one store if the attendant isn't experienced or you want a second opinion.
  21. I did a quick search on google for "car has this pulsating voltage" and found many answers basically summed up here: http://www.ehow.com/facts_8003481_car-lights-gauges-pulsing.html
