  1. Also might want to check out JCWhitney online for molded carpet. They had one for My 84 BRAT. Kind of shocking... wasn't horrible on price, little over a hundred bucks I think. Might not do any good but couldn't hurt.
  2. Just an idea... I was told that one of the old sprinkler valve wrenches fits the grooves and will turn the caliper down you could just grind off the end and attach it to a high torque drill... cuts down on the time spent hand cranking. If its too tight for a full size drill a right angle drill might work. My brother in law told me that... cant say that I have tried it myself. But might be worth a shot.
  3. Thank you both for the info.. Jerry I sent you a PM but if any of you are considering Seafoam... holy crap what are you waiting for?!! I don't know what's in that stuff but I put it in my tank and topped it off and for the first time since I have owned the BRAT my tank read all the way full! Problems not totally ironed out yet but has seemed to make a difference for the better. Any body looking at this with a similar problem... give Seafoam a try. It cost me about $10 bucks and I had to ask for it.. it was behind the counter at my local Checker Auto store. Too easy to not try it. DaGodfada
  4. Hello to all, Need Help in the worst way... Got my 84 Brat on the road finally, tried to sell it, glad I didn't because now I have this crazy fuel problem that I cant figure out. Just a little history on the Brat.. sat in a field for 4 years, every available crevice had been filled with a mouse house, (criminal I know) was told that engine was seized... checked oil, moved engine and two squirts of starting fluid later and the Brat came to life for the first time in four years. Gotta love the EA81 engine. Drove the Brat for three weeks as a daily driver and the head gaskets blew. Did a headgasket replacement, my first, replaced all intake gaskets, exaust gaskets, clutch, clutch cable, did a full tune up Plugs (Bocsh Quads) new wires, cap, rotor, oil change, fuel filters (both of them) etc.. Everything went really well on the rebuild, Brat came back to life after a little timing work. Once I started driving it, it was surging like it was starving for fuel. That was when I found out about the second fuel filter back by the fuel pump. Once that was replaced it was running fine. Now it is doing it again.. thought it was the filters again so I replaced them.. Both.. still doing it but not all the time. Sometimes it idles just fine runs just like it is supposed to. Then for no reason that I can tell, rpm's drop off car surges like it's starving for fuel and next to impossible to keep at idle... Any thoughts? I don't mind turning the wrenches but I don't know where to go from here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  5. Thanks... Still new to this. Had an 87 GL wagon a few years ago and am really looking forward to getting back into the Soobs:banana:
  6. Ok everyone... I had a 84 Brat given to me. Had sat in a field for about four years turned into a mouse house... sinful I know. Here is the problem...The car started and ran even after sitting for that long with just a little starting fluid. (Gotta Love the Ea82 Motors) But after driving it for a few weeks I started to do a little work on it and it started blowing steam out the exaust. I had been under the hood for a few hours and when I started it up to check my work...(nowhere near the heads) it was blowing steam. I am getting ready for an engine overhaul but I need some advice. Is it most likely the gasket or the head? and if I dive that deep into the motor i am going to redo the clutch and timing belts but should I do the rings and main bearings too? Any of your experience and expertise in this matter is greatly appriciated... Shaun
  7. I can feel your pain as far as the mechanical abilities go. I am not the worlds best mechanic, in fact calling myself a mechanic is an unjustice to anyone who has that ability that has ever picked up a wrench. But this little POS Subaru that I bought is rapidly changing my opinion of turning the wrenches. I have enjoyed the work that I have done to my Subaru. And I am looking forward to doing some of the more advanced mods that I have read about here on the board. And a couple hundred bucks will put your car back on the road. And that beats the hell out of a car payment. By the way Walmart has a good selection of Stanley Tools (Mac low end) and they are really not that expensive. SCOOBY MUST LIVE!!! 8. Hey Glenn, I didn't even notice you were local with me! Thanks for the heads up on the boneyard! I was going to try Pick and Pull which for the last two times I have been there it should have been called Rape and Screw. Didn't even know about A1 I'll give it a try. By the way I looked at your post for "SUMMER" that is kick rump roast! If you ever have it out and about town let me know, I would love to see that thing up close! Shaun...DaGodfada:brow:
  9. Hello All, After many failed attempts at patching, I finally gave up and removed the rear CAT and replaced it with a straight pipe. I didn't even realize how much power I had lost due to that damn exaust leak. And with a motor that could just as easily be rated in squirrel power as in horse power, any loss is a big deal. Now for the next project. I ran a ohms check on the egr solenoid...42.9 so I am assuming that it is bad. At least from what I read here on the board it should be no higher than 39.0 to be a good one. I am going to the boneyards this weekend to try to find a replacement. Because the price from Subaru (110.00!) made my butthole pucker just a little bit. I also need to find a replacement for my manual transmission dipstick! Sucker broke off clean when I went to replace it the other day when I was checking my fluid:banghead: . Speaking of which, does anyone else have a problem with the passenger side axle leaking gear oil on the front CAT? I have this wicked hot smell after driving for 20-30 miles Pretty much my daily commute. Thanks everyone for your help. Shaun...DaGodfada:brow:
  10. Hello All, I have broken down and decided to buy a new EGR solinoid. (Most probable cause of my check engine light) I just need to know if changing it out is a really hard job, anything to watch out for, or just general heads ups. I have been looking at the other posts and find several references to it (the EGR solinoid) just not a lot of input on the actual changing of it. Just on a side note, anyone else notice that Chilton and Hayes repair books are damn near worthless? Shaun...DaGodfada:brow:
  11. Got to agree with Morgan, If you are planning to do much with this car, you are going to want the extra ponies. (Trust Me) And these Roo's are not long on power anyway. Just long on FUN:banana: Shaun...DaGodfada:brow:
  12. Yeah I have to agree about the tune up. For less than $100 bucks you can pick up everything you need to do a first rate tune up. My wagon is the same model without the Turbo and I noticed a huge difference with just the new Plugs and cap and rotor. Shaun...DaGodfada:brow:
  13. Yeah Man! Hey when you get that Rear Spare tire rack hammered out, drop me a line. I want the best but lack the skills:lol: . But all in all for a first attempt and doing all the fab work by yourself. Only one word to describe it...DAMN! Shaun...DaGodfada:brow:
  14. Hello All! I have a check engine light on, and thanks to the wonderful help here on the board I now know how to check them. But at the risk of sounding as stupid as I feel, where in the HELL is the ECU? I have searched as many different threads as I can and I know what to look for on the ECU just don't know where it is. Any help will be greatly appreciated. (And please, be gentle) Just really new to Soob's. Thanks...DaGodfada:brow:
  15. Hello to All! I was driving my 88 Gl-10 Wagon over the weekend out by Strawberry Reservoir (Anyone not local PM me for directions) There sitting out in a cow pasture (gasp) was an older 80's series wagon with a big $700 in the front windshield. I didn't get a chance to stop and check on the exacts but it looked like a pretty good looking little car. It is located on Interstate Hwy 40 between Heber City Utah and Strawberry Reservoir, Probably less than 5 miles outside of Heber. About 40 minutes outside of Salt Lake. Anyone interested can reply and I'll try to be more specific. Cant be more specific about the car though, I only know that it is an 80's series wagon. Shaun...DaGodfada:brow:
  16. Driving My 88 Gl Wagon today in down town traffic, when it suddenly sounded like I was driving a 57 Chevy with glass packs on it. Pulled over and looked under the car and saw that the exaust had rusted through and that it had separated from the front half of the catalytic converter. So I need to know from those who know, if I remove the CC and just run a straight pipe for now, will that damage anything, will I lose preformance. I know that it won't pass smog like that but just for a temp fix until I can replace the entire exaust system. (Trust me, the exaust has more rust spots than the Titanic) any thoughts would be most helpful. Thanks from, Shaun...DaGodfada:brow:
  17. Hello my Roo lovin, Brothers and Sisters. I am fairly new to the USMB but I have to say that so far I am LOVING IT! I just bought this little 88 gl wagon EA82 Fuel injected, 5 speed Dual stage 4x4. For as old as it is, and with as many miles as it has (211000+) it still runs really well. My wife and I are taking our daughter for her first trip to Disneyland in late October. I really want to take the Roo, But it is a good stretch of the legs from Salt Lake City. I have a few concerns that I want to bounce off the more experienced Roo owners out there. I get a Check engine light that comes on after about 2 minutes of normal operation. No real problems that I can notice though, Also it has a small rattle that comes and goes which most here on the board seem to think is the oil pump/oil pump seals. I have the driver side drive axle that has quite a bit of slop in it, I plan to replace that, It has a slight oil leak coming from the valve cover gasket, also plan to replace. But what I want to know if before an extended roadie like this, should I replace the timing belts? I don't know anything about the past history of this car. So I have done the tune up, Plugs, wires, cap and rotor, oil change, air filter. I plan to replace the seals on both drive axles and replace the drivers side axle (should I do them both?) I am going to replace the oil pump seals, (or is that rattle the pump itself?) and then any insight on the check engine light, and the timing belts (replace or not) would be most helpful. Sorry for the long post everyone, but any help with this (and any other preventitive tips that you may have that I have overlooked) would be most appreciated. Shaun...DaGodfada:brow:
  18. Hey Racer, Don't Let those anorexic little hags ruin your fun. You know what, I am right there with you. About 6'4 320lbs and I am currently working on my Roo to make it a SuperRoo! When I am done it will be the Ultimate Redneck Vehicle. But I plan to have fun with it. And I have already began to receive the ridicule about it. "You want to do what?" is the most popular response. Even from my beloved wife of almost 12 years. But it's what you want that really matters. Those girls are going to spend their life in the gym, sweating trying to keep their perfect little bodies in shape and do you know where you will be? You will be behind the wheel of your Subaru, feeling the joy that only Roo owners know. So maybe one day those girls will pull their heads out of their butts so that it will be easier to put their fingers down their throats. So my advice is, drive to Mcdonalds, buy a double cheeseburger and a shake sit there in your Roo and feel the euphoria of knowing that no matter what else happens, you will always have the support of the board, a support group like no other. We always have your back, no matter how large it may be...LOL. Keep you chin up and drive off into the sunset in your Roo! Shaun... DaGodfada:brow:
  19. Hey thanks MorganM, I'm really new to all of this, can anyone explain the whole backspacing thing to me? I swear that I'm not stupid, I just am new to doing anything that isn't stock.. Well maybe a little stupid. Just want to beast this Subi out and have some fun. Shaun.
  20. Hello to all! I just wanted to say that it is awesome to have a group like this to chat with. I already received some great help with the strange noise that is coming from my engine. And I have already started looking on how to replace my oil seals. But here is my new question, I just got this little 88 over the weekend, Picked it up for a song from a little P.O.S. dealer here locally. Runs really well and seems to be a fairly solid car. I bought it because I couldn't afford a "real" 4x4. (Please don't take offense to that, I am learning quickly) Started looking for upgrades yesterday and was amazed at the simple, inexpensive upgrades to make this little wagon a POWER-WAGON. Has anyone done a lift on one of these. I am looking to do a 3-4 inch lift kit and putting some 27x9.5x15 Swampers on it. I am just curious about how much cutting I will have to do to the fenders. I know that it is a little extreme, but what the hell. If you are going to have a 4x4 might as well have fun with it. Thanks... Shaun (Converted Subi Lover) Forgive me brother's for I have sinned. I'll never turn to the dark side again...
  21. Yeah funny thing about that, the motor has a intermitant lifter noise. Sounds like it is rattling and then smooths out. Also the check engine light comes on after about the first 5 minutes of operation. Usually right after I drop it into fouth gear. But you are right all in all for a motor with 211k on it it still runs like a champ. Any thoughts on that lifter Noise? Thanks Shaun
  22. Hey, thanks for the info, I just got excited when I heard that there was a turbo motor out there. But I have looked at my options and think that just another EFI EA82 motor is the way to go. Or Maybe I can repair this one. Thanks Shaun
  23. Hello to all! I am now the proud owner of my first Subaru. An 88 GL wagon. The motor in this thing is about to die. I need to replace it, but while buying parts to try to nurse this old one along, I found out about the existence of an EA82 Turbo. So now my question is, how difficult would it be to replace the old EA82 with the EA82T? Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks... Shaun
