Advice on buying a 1st Gen Wagon?
ystrdyisgone replied to ystrdyisgone's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
One more update. There's a vid of the wagon. I may have spotted the rust spot of death you are speaking of leeroy. Lemme know what you guys think. Edit: I have access to many of the parts needed for this vehicle at my work, as another factor in the whole equation. -
Advice on buying a 1st Gen Wagon?

Haha yeah, I'd like to do the trade, but the distance, and condition of the ea71 is what worries me. If I had a truck and trailer, it would be a different story. Sounds like some great advice. Thanks for the heads up Leeroy! -
Advice on buying a 1st Gen Wagon?

I guess I can rephrase this. I found this: http://i.imgur.com/nuXa2Aw.jpg?1 for 800 bucks. It runs and drives. Engine sounds pretty good actually. No back seat, the interior is shot. Think it's worth pulling the trigger? The coloring in the picture that looks like rust is actually the original red paint. I'm about 80% set on buying it. Planning on making the trip tomorrow morning. Just not sure on the price. Although seller is pretty adamant about keeping it a firm 800. Thoughts? Input? Thanks ahead of time -
Wagonstien taking fully independent suspension to the next level
ystrdyisgone replied to Ioku's topic in Members Rides
Yeah I was hoping it would work out too. At the least, I guess you learned what NOT to do. Although it may have been an expensive/time consuming lesson, now you know. I'm not sure what your plans are for the wagon, but I am VERY interested in that rear bumper if you would like to sell it -
Arizona Find: 78' Subaru Wagon
ystrdyisgone replied to Sub78's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Awesome wagon, I've been on the hunt for one of these ever since I got my wagon, and realized my mistake when I first saw one of these babies. I was wondering if that was someone on USMB... Ran across a few of your vids the other night. -

Bout time! Haha, I've been wondering about this wagon's progress. I may have missed it somehow, what's the bad news about that post? -
D/R Swap + New Clutch (Pics)
ystrdyisgone replied to jj421's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Being strictly a mechanical operation, if the lever is all the way up, it's in low. With my D/R, it likes to be rolling at least a bit to engage the 4hi. I can engage the 4lo while moving, but it requires a bit more effort to engage. So yeah, stopped is probably best for lo. -

Congrats man! I was lurking on this thread the whole way through. Thought to post a few times, but the other members covered it already. It's pretty satisfying doing a job like this without the tools that are "required." Where there's a will, there's a way! -
Yup looks like a little work cut out for ya. But the pooch likes it already, and that's all that really matters. Ha, have fun with this man! Any ideas for paint yet?

New from Washington

Hey man, welcome to the board! I was the dude assisting with the 2" lift info on that other site that we are never supposed to speak of outside said site... Looking forward to watching the progress on your wagon. Be sure to either create a build thread, or ask for this one to be moved to the Member's Rides section once you start the modifications. -
I don't have too much experience in this area, but I'm gonna throw out some ideas that came to mind. If you used the stock radiator hoses, are they kinked at all from the new angles? As far as coolant going into the engine, gravity says it flows better with the lift. But the return line is a different story. Maybe that increase in angle is enough to slow down the coolant flow to an unsatisfactory level?

Nice! Congrats man. -
The pooch and I on our last adventure: Also, Mechanymous, I will +1 GirlWithALegacy's comment, as those dreads are indeed quite spectacular.

The wagon has been very happy lately. Next on the list of to-dos is timing belt replacement, front seals, and side seals. Once that is done, it will finally be worth it to me to get some bigger wheels and a lift. I took her on a little trip for some hiking near Yellowstone. She loves those curvy mountain roads Here's a pic at the park entrance with her new wind fairing, got it for 25 bucks: Back wheel looked pretty cool, had to take a pic: I finally got a rack for it today too. It was expensive, but at half off the retail price I couldn't pass it up:

Blower motor issues, 1993 Loyale wagon
ystrdyisgone replied to BrianB's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
In my experience, the search function on this site is useless. Try google with usmb in the search. This thread I posted some time ago may help http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/135553-ea82-fan-power-selector-fix/?do=findComment&comment=1139565 -
MagnaFlow Y-pipe direct replacement
ystrdyisgone replied to r81gsr95's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm pretty sure that ebay item is just a catalytic converter. To my knowledge, no one makes an aftermarket y-pipe for EA82s. Infernofab (on this forum, forgot his username) has been making headers for the ej22s, I don't recall if he has made the ea82 ones yet. edit: His name's Sube101 -

I believe Idasho did something like that on his EA81 wagon. -
Best stock suspension
ystrdyisgone replied to peacewize's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Someone who knows a bit more about this should probably chime in, but I'll say that the GL-10 front springs have more coil, same height. Which I'm guessing makes for a bit smoother ride? Not sure about the rears though. -

Spotted a couple ea81 wagons in a field today. One maroon, one either grey or light blue. Let me know if you would like me to look into them more. -
IIRC(if I recall correctly)

Looks like a fun project, I'll be watching this one. For the gauges, I vote for a little pod up on the dash. It seems more convenient to have it more in the line of sight, instead of having to look down.

ystrdyisgone replied to tdodge41's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
I live in the bozeman area. I also work in a subaru shop, so if you are thinking of holding off until august, I could easily have a perfectly running, trip-worthy one ready to go by then. Ultimately it really depends on what you are looking for, and how much you are willing to spend. The majority of soobs I see are the late 80s wagons, needing minor to mediocre repair. Every now and then an early 80s wagon pops up. Bottom line, if you want a mechanically sound vehicle to drive back home this fall, I would be happy to help you with that. But by doing so you miss out on the whole "learn as you go" process.. until something breaks again 50k miles later ha. Food for thought is all that is. Let me know how the search goes. -
I got my radius rod bushings in the mail yesterday. Threw them on today. The existing ones didn't look TOO bad.. but I'm sure it will help to have some fresh rubber in there as opposed to 26 year old stuff. I also installed the GL-10 struts I mentioned a few posts back. Seems like a nicer ride.. Maybe just placebo effect? There is one more revolution in the coil though, so that's gotta count for something.
