SEEC- T 1600 cc engine - what was it?

And subaru-earth.com tells us that they developed this system to comply with 1978 Exhaust Emissions regulations. -
SEEC- T 1600 cc engine - what was it?
ystrdyisgone replied to jono's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Based on some googling, some old popular mechanics magazines told me basically this: Subaru Exhaust Emission Control Technique. It requires no catalyst or other tack-on emission-control device. It is a system for introducing fresh air into the combustion chamber that works with the air/fuel mixture to sandwich unburned exhaust(which comes in through a special air-intake valve) and ensure more complete burning. This not only cleans up the exhaust, but allows the engine to run a leaner mixture of fuel. -
I've got a lot of slack, but I think the shielding on the cable is getting worn out, there is a spot right next to the coil pack that makes a sharp bend, may just have to replace it. I'm pretty happy to see it in there too. Now the fun part of getting it running! That shift range sounds exactly right to me, can't wait to feel it myself.

Cool, glad to hear that scooner. I didn't put it in backwards, so we're good there! On another note, after a long hard day, the engine is in! Words for the wise: taking an engine out with ratcheting tie down straps is much easier than putting an engine in with the same method. Many hours later, here she is: I used the original round EJ mounts, which I've heard are crap, but I got sick of spending money on this thing. So I shimmed them by welding 3/8" flat stock to correct the angle. I also filled the mounts with polyurethane(the inside part of the mount) to limit movement. Thanks Uberoo for that suggestion, will be doing the same thing with my tranny mounts when I get around to it. While the engine was out I noticed the oil pan has a decent sized dent in the bottom. Looked fine to me, but now that it's in the car, it seems to look worse. Might have to replace that. Anyone know how much clearance there is between the bottom of the pan and the oil pickup tube? I also hooked up my throttle cable, at the new angle, there seems to be a lot of tension/binding of the cable, and the throttle only opens about 4/5ths of the way when floored. Gotta do some research on what people did for the throttle. I really hope the answer isn't to swap in the legacy cable, because I just destroyed the one I have :/

I was just doing some reading on resealing ej22s, and apparently the common consensus is that you do NOT touch the rear main seal.. Well spoob.. just replaced that yesterday, wish I had read that beforehand. I was planning on doing the O-rings on the cams, but with the new belts on there, I'm just going to cross my fingers and hope that those were done previously. I put some new intake manifold gaskets on the other day. Got the ecu wires all labeled. Flywheel is at the shop, picking it up monday. Exedy clutch kit will also be here monday. If I can figure out this adapter plate/welded bolt business this weekend, I think the engine will be going in on monday! hope I'm not screwed with that rear main seal..

Split motor mounts on an EJ22>Loyale swap

Sounds like a great idea, thanks Uberoo. Just to clarify, are you talking about filling in the open space? And maybe adding a layer to the outside of the existing rubber? -
I myself did a hack job of cutting off the muffler and straight piping it from there with 2". Sounded pretty darn good to me. If you do end up straight piping it the whole way, I'd probably put a high-flowing turbo muffler at the back to get rid of a little bite. But it's all up to you. This may help give you an idea of the direction you want to take it: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/31437-how-loud-is-a-na-ea82-with-a-presilencer-straight-pipe/

Wires wires wires, they haunt me. So many damn wires! I'm guessing I'm about a third(??) of the way through the harness, more fun tomorrow. Then I gotta figure out the bolts I'm going to weld for the adapter plate. Then waiting on some parts for the engine. Then redrilling flywheel and getting it resurfaced to xt6 specs. Then it all goes in?? I think?

5MT D/R leak in rear
ystrdyisgone replied to ystrdyisgone's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well alright, I'll just ignore that then. Thanks fellas! Damn, look at that thing! How many miles were on it? -
I noticed this: while under the car today. I've been browsing RockAuto for the proper seal, but can't seem to figure it out. Output shaft seal? Extension seal?

Split motor mounts on an EJ22>Loyale swap

Bringin this one back from the dead! Has anyone come up with anything for the trans mounts? I'm considering ditching the round mounts on my donor engine and coughing up the cash for the group n's. But what's the point if my trans mounts are crap? -
Well the digging into the donor has begun. The engine bay is all ready to go. Wires all labeled, and will be pulling the engine tomorrow. I peeked behind the timing belt covers and the belts look brand new, so that was an awesome surprise! Hopefully the water pump was replaced too.. Tore into the interior as well. I've got the whole dash out, some wires labeled, some plugs cut(hvac, radio, etc..) Should be a fun day tomorrow I'm sure I'll have many questions concerning this wiring harness, maybe I'll start a separate thread for those.

Throw our bearing question.

Hmm, well let's wait for someone else who really knows what they're talking about to chime in. I only kind of know what I'm talking about.. -

Well as far as I know, that is pretty much one piece. When you get a new clutch kit, it comes with a replacement throwout bearing "assembly." -

The throwout bearing attaches to the clutch fork with two clips. Are you referring to the pilot bearing? -
Yeah same here, my wife has a 99 Outback, and I don't see no stinking trans spacers under there.. I thought about welding an extra 1/4 inch on there, but it was the end of the day, I was tired, and I figured 1/4" shouldn't be too big of an issue. Guess I'll find out eh?
-
When you get the transmission crossmember could you snap a pic of said spacers? In all my searching I was unable to find such a thing. Hence why I only dropped my trans xmember an inch.

So she's getting her tires balanced today, she didn't wanna fork out 76 for a full alignment. I'll be ordering those bushings soon, gonna do the balljoints while I'm at it. How much of a pita are those bushings to R&R? Another thought, she did have both axles replaced recently, I was thinking maybe the shop didn't torque down the axle nuts all the way?
-
When the time comes, there is a company that makes a bumper with tire swing options. I think he is a member on here but I'm not sure. Seems to me a swinging jerry can holder wouldn't be too difficult to add on to it. http://www.headtraumainc.com/subaru.html

Patty, I recently have been going through many of the same issues with the same vehicle, same lift, same tires. The legacy coupler they are referring to would be first generation legacy(not outback), which is 90-96 i believe. I installed crossmember spacers from an outback(1 1/4") and build the rest of my spacers. I sandwiched, and welded 1/2'' flat stock to make 1'' spacers for the rest of the components (transmission crossmember, radius rod brackets). Just to be safe I also used a single layer of the 1/2" flat stock and spaced the carrier bearing and the dogbone looking plate down. Said plate is attached under the trans tunnel near the tail end of the transmission, attached with 4 bolts, you'll see it.
-
That worked. Wheee! looks like a lot of fun. You had me worried about 30 sec in, down at the dark end of the lot it almost looked like you were about to drift into another car.

Only a two inch lift (Boss) and the tires are 205/70/15.
