  1. Mary! I love reading your escapaded with the 78...I hope it all works out. I am starting to live with my Fog Bank..but it stops after a minute or 2 now. Hey you got me beat on the MPB...I have only managed to get a wopping 1 mile on the coupe so far...now the brakes are out in it. Just a stab in the dark here...and you can tell me if you replaced or already checked this or if I am just being a dumb idiot (which is most likely)...but have you checked to see if one of those hoses going to the air filter are clogged??
  2. Not defending the mechanic ...but I have learned that they charge you book rate..whatever the book says for length of time to fix a problem....whether it took them that long or not. To me it is a rip off...thats why I either do the work myself or get friends that know what they are doing to help...and if that doesnt work then I only take to trusted mechanics ( and I only have 1 that I trust)
  3. No offence cause everyone has thier own opinion and own tastes...but I find it as ugly or maybe even uglier than the Honda Element and the Pontiac Aztecs. If I could afford to but a new one it would be an Impreza wagon or a Baja...but I be poor to so I will stick to my refridgerator and my coupe.
  4. I think one of moosens friends had the ultimate load...Gen 1 Legacy..with something like 5 or 6 trannys, diffs, rears, axles, maybe even a motor or two..all I know that thing was about a half inch off the ground! Subes are great for hauling though arent they?!
  5. I have one in the basement..The the "chrome" is pealed but its in OK shape...If you interested I can take a pic for you.
  6. LOL...Bucky is a 5 spd non-turbo FWD ..but I think he is a blast to drive..its fun racing mo-peds and winning:grin: . For something like that though I would want to bring my coupe baby sweetheart beauty (she is purring nicely outside right now ..time for her every other day half hour run)
  7. Mary I am anxious too..Just in case Lucky ever needs a new carb.
  8. Ummmm..Spark...Ummm..I live in CT dude!!!LOL..Little bit long of a drive out on short notice
  9. See Mary!! I told you not to give up on that thing!!! It had to be something simple. And you wanted to sell it...shame shame on you!!! Congrats btw..now you can take it more than 2 miles from the house!
  10. YellowSub..find a new husband!!! Just Kidding:lol: I have to tell my boyfriend all the time..girls dont want jewlery or clothes or make-up....we want older generation Subarus!! When are they ever going to get it through thier heads???
  11. Yeah!! Another girl to the board...SubaruGals ROCK!! There are actually a good number of us here. Congrats on the 82! I have an 82 GLF coupe with PW,and all the toys too right down to some awsome 8 spoke alloy rims and 32K original miles.. Us Old Gen Girls need to represent! Can't always leave it up to the guys....just kidding guys ..you all know I luv each and everyone of you
  12. I have to agre with McBrat on this..fix the legacy. You are just haveing too many issues with the Loyale.I feel the price is too high with the problems you say it has.Granted the book on my 92 Loyale with the mileage is alittle over $1300 (FWD 5 Spd) but mine runs like clockwork, and I paid only $600 for it 2 years ago from a dealer. Loyales oil pressure does read at close to 0 at idle so that isnt a problem its normal BTW. Also like I stated before..too low of miles is worse than too high..take it from someone who knows. Sitting is bad for cars...causes many issues. Manytimes they need RUN a good bit before they get back to where they should be.Meanwhile things go bad..frequently...from dried out seals, belts, etc. If you are happy with your legacy then fix it...or look for something private party. If you are looking for something you can buy today and drive it tomorrow without any worries then it sounds like this is not the car for you.The 1.8 motor in the EA82s is quirkie but not in a completely bad way..just likes to go through EGR sylinoids, they leak oil,oil pump gaskets get partially sucked in and can cause HLA ticks (but they run forever ticking) or the HLAs get dirty and tick, plus timing belts (at least they are non-interference motors). Just stuff you have to think about if you want to deal with it...none of it major stuff ..just annoying at times.
  13. You know....I know many people that sware by consumer reports..and get screwed..people are looking for a no maintenance car..well thats not going to happen.People are just lazy now adays. Do Loyales have problems??? Yes...are they major..No.Can they be annoying at times...Yes. But if you are willing to do the work on them yourself they are cheap and easy to keep going. If these are such bad cars then why do the majority of them have well over 200,000 miles on them? The thing that kills the Loyales,GLs and DLs etc...well any EA82 is rust. You go to a junk yard and most of them that are there still run but are rusted out. I live by myself and have a VERY limited income(and if you havent noticed I am female!)..I cannot afford to take my car to the garage for anything but maybe to change a tire. I bought my Loyale 2 years ago cause I remembered my 88 GL wagon was such a good car..I got rid of it due to my own stupidity at the time. It needed an exhaust and they wanted a fortune to replace that I didnt have. (But all cars cost alot for exhaust these days when you think about it). I used that GL as a delivery car which is very hard on them...and it kept going like a champ. You are looking at a 13 year old car also..you have to remember that.If you want something with no maintenance then you need to look at a new warrenteed car.A Loyale will run forever ..you just have to spend time with it.Also..if the one your are looking at is AT...I feel that was one of Subarus early weak points (now its head gaskets..read posts in the new gen forum..it almost makes me laugh). I have a beautiful 82 GLF coupe with 32K on it...and it has problems from not being run enough. But I accept that..and it doesnt make me hate the car..if anything it makes me like it more. Another member has one of the most gorgous 78 Brats I have ever seen..low mileage..but it has problems from not being run enough. I would much rather take the word from people who actually own these cars and drive them EVERY day then by some compant that is paid to give cars reports. Just my 2 cents and I am sticking to it:grin:
  14. congrats on your new Subie!! I love Loyales..not fast but they are dependable. And Welcome to the board
  15. My 92 Loyale has 189,000 miles on it and has been the BEST vehicle I have ever owned...and I have had alot.In the 2 years I have owned it ..it has given me no real trouble...always starts and gets me to where I have to go..I have replaced an axle shaft in it and had to do tune up work(cap rotor, wires, plugs). I would not be afraid to drive that car anywhere. The problems they do have are so minor and easy to fix it is rediculous. They like to leak oil..but even to reseal the engine isnt bad.Timing belts MUST be changed between 60,000 and 90,000 miles (I should talk mine have been on for 120,000 miles). I sware by these cars and wouldnt have anything else for my daily driver. With that mileage it hasnt even been broke in yet..which could cause some problems..it is worse to have too few miles than too many..I have an 82 GLF coupe with 32K and it is proven to be a challenge..but it is still a great running car. I would buy it!!! Dont let consumer reports fool ya..they only seem to praise the companies that pay them off(Just my opinion) buy it buy it buy it..
  16. I have been looking in my FSM for what #2 is and I am not really coming up with much just possibly the Control Valve assembly????? Shame is I have sitting here on the kitchen floor a complete intake from an EA81 with that part on it..(Sorry Hocrest..shipping it out tomorrow!!))
  17. Item 2 is the Kanooter Valve! Sorry been waiting to use that for a long time.
  18. Sounds like a classic PCV valve to me...thats just what my 88 did. Try that first..cheap simple fix.
  19. Hey!! I have a Nice little low low mileage coupe that might make an interesting story!!...J/K But actually..How about Vintage New England..where these old beautys are disappearing and the few of us that dedicate ourselves to saving them. And BTW..I just subcribed!
  20. Thanks guys..I am starting to become very happy with her.She is such a beautiful car. A couple more weeks and I believe she will be ready..I hope..I cant wait to show her off...every weekend we have a car show right around the corner from me and I want to take her down.Especially when all the kids have thier WRXs there.
  21. Soon I think Turbone...still needs new gaskets on the Y pipe (exhaust manifold gaskets) and some new belts and I want to replace a couple hoses. She has a bad tick on the one side of the motor that I believe is just a valve that needs adjusted (one of the things on my list for when Miles Fox comes this way). But after running her for a good hour and taking her up the street for a spin and around my parking lot a couple hundred times...I think she should be ready very soon to hit the highway for a short test trip. I can't wait..she felt so good..nice and tight.. And the guy at the gas station was drooling over her.
  22. Well..today my GLF got to take her first drive on her own power. I put the fan back in her and ran her for a good half hour before I talked myself into driving her up the street to put some fresh gas in her. She is so much fun to drive!! Everything seemed to work fine..tranny was alittle tweeked but I think once she gets out more it should shift better. Put $15.00 of gas in her and drove her home..she was running SMOOTH...smooth acceleration, smoot idle..I think her whole smoking issue was bad gas cause now she isnt smoking anymore. Her whole trip...2 blocks round trip. But she no longer has 32,715 miles:( ..she has 32,716!! Ok OK ..I love this car..she rocks:headbang:
  23. Mary Mary Mary!!!! You are soooo close...dont give up! I know how you feel though..I have my beautiful GLF sitting here basically doing nothing. As you even said..We buy the old ones for the body the rest is fixable.Just 2 days ago after replacing the water pump and running it for 10 minutes the coupe started to stall..now it wont idle. Whatever is wrong with the 78 is probably something so simple that its the reason why its frustrating you. Wait for Miles to come and see what he can do.
  24. I just finished putting the new water pump in my GLF (Thanks McBrat you the man!!) and my friends 11 YO daughter has been wanting to learn how to work on cars..so I kidnapped her today and showed her how to change an EA81 water pump. She did wonderful!! We finished in about two hours (had some snags along the way) No leaks no errors!! will put fan back in tomorrow and run her for about a half hour or so. I think my friends daughter is a natural!
  25. Paulyburger....drop it off sometime and I could buff that beauty out for you...you DO know I used to run an auto detail shop..you might be suprised at what I can do. Hard to tell sometimes looking at my cars ( I need to get to both real soon before rust takes over)
