  1. Ben...since Guido is your DD and you NEED him for work ( I totally understand where you are at...been there..many many times) Here is what i would do...start NOW acrewing parts..even if you can only grab a couple dollar gasket..start now..Look for used but good parts cheaper for now ( JY,board members, etc). Then once you have everything invite some friends over ..offer food ... ( I know you said money is an object but even cheap food..hot dogs.. mac and cheese..you have it..they will come) and have a fix the car party...you would be amazed the amount of work that can get done with multiple hands.Have them bring tools etc..They dont all have to be Subaru friends. I have been in your shoes ( actually still am I need a ton of work on my Imp that I cant do by myself) I know 100% how you feel and if I was closer I would be one of those people to come help. I will still donate to the cause somehow. As for ball joints...sometimes you can find a whole good set up cheaper at the JY ( complete Hub assembly ) for cheap that might be an option also thats how I got one new one on the XT6
  2. I think alot of this has to come down to personal preference...wether you feel the "quirkie" thing is appearence or performance or just the little things. I personally feel that my Impreza has no "quirkiness" to it..I find it boring and plain and lacking something...maybe personality? But its my daily driver ..thats what I wanted it for and I love it..just trying to give it some personality. My XT6...Now that is "quirky" ..Like someone mentioned on the XT6 sight...its a sheep in wolfs clothing. The 08 is starting to grow on me abit..I havent driven one yet..but the styling is growing on me... Basically..its all what you want the car for... You want something for Daily drivingthat dependable..there is nothing worng with getting an 08..there are or will be plenty of aftermarket parts available to add some individuality to it. You want "quirk" you keep and older one around for those days you just want to be different...Thats what I do with my XT6...drive it once a week just for fun...take it to shows etc..the rest of the time I use my Imp. If I could afford an 08 Imp would I buy it??? Damn Skippy! Its actually a nice car ( Not as sexy as that 08 Turbo Outback Wagon I looked at though:slobber: :slobber: :slobber: :slobber: ) Like I said..It all comes down to personal preference. My person favorite Subaru is an EA82 wagon ( many people hate them and think this is better or thats better) But thats MY choice...if we all felt the same and thought the same and liked the same and hated the same...it would be a pretty boring world
  3. I poured half the can into my crankcase on the Imp right after the first oil change..since the old oil was OMG thick and black..ran that sucker for over 3000 miles without any problems. Drained it and it was fine..the only reason why the oil appeared thinner was cause it was still on the warm side when I drained it. Seafoam MMO ATF...all does about the same thingin the crankcase...its all a personal preference . They are all detergents and if you have an oil leak thats seems small because of all the gunk around the leak..well.these detergents may make it worse...but the benefits out wiegh that oil leak...come-on..we all own Subarus and dont they come from the factory with an oil leak? Wouldnt you rather know that your internals are working right and clean and have to add a quart of oil every week or 2 or 3? Or better yet just fix the leak the right way. I have run Seafoam and MMO in both my crankcase and gas tank for many many years on many many cars and never had an issue caused by either product. In fact many years ago back in 97 or 98 when I had my 88 GL wagon...a mechanic friend of mine ( Owned half the junk yard I worked at..only person who could figure out my smoking problem..even when the dealer couldnt and 6 other garages) told me to swap out a quart of oil for ATF with every oil change...explained that the ports are small and get easily gummed up...the ATF helps clean them..keep them clean and I should never have the smoking issue again as long as I do that. So let me see...ran Bucky (EA82) for 5 years on seafoam and MMO...motor fine...ran Rocky ( XT6)1 year on seafoam...runs like a raped ape and no leaks.. been running Pheebie ( EJ18 ) on Seafoam for 5000 miles no issues cept found her oil leak ( good thing now I can fix that)
  4. We plan on leaving here between 11 and 12..supposed to be raining so we will be taking our time....see ya tomorrow:banana:
  5. I am ready..shame its supposed to rain tomorrow..I was planning on washing the Rockster after work...should run him down to the auto parts store and pick up a new wiper blade though
  6. I just had mine replaced on my XT6 from Diamond...they usually have to bend and trash the moldings to get them off..thats why they mention the universal etc...after watching it done..there really isnt much of a way around it. I will never sweat at the price of the glass..after seeing and helping this guy for over 2 hours to fix mine. We used the universal molding and it looks fine..you dont even notice it. The guy did good work considering what he had to work with...a 20 Y/O car with a bad previous replacement...a ton of caulking and some rust undernieth...we even fixed it while it was out.
  7. Good for you! And you are luck to be as close to a very knowledgeable member like Turbone...Great guy to have around in a bind.Good luck I am working on an XT6 project myself..they can be frustrating at times but will be worth it all in the end
  8. DEAL!! ...as long as there is a place around I can let you see what a low mileage XT6 can do;) :slobber: I hope you dont mind the lack of carpet..I still havent gutted the car to put the new in..will do over the winter. I dont know about a ride in a lifted Loyale...I am looking for a new Loyale or EA82 wagon to do a lift on...if I take a ride in one it will make me want one and miss my Loyale more:grin: . OH! Tommy said he will tape the Hockey Game so he is coming. Our costumes?? I am coming as a fat chick and he is a guy with a mullet. Got the directions printed out..just need to clean up the car and do once over.
  9. What GD has to say about going with the first gen new gen cars..I just moved up to a gen 1 Imp for a daily driver...I would prefer using and older EA82 personally..I like my Imp..dont get me wrong..its a great car.gets awesome gas mileage (92 L Sedan 5 spd AWD gets 30-32 mpg...EJ18 motor) but it has to be one of the most boring cars..common and boring...I like my cars to have some character and the new gens just dont seem to have it as much. I actually drove an 07 Lego and..it was nice and all..but my20 y/o XT6 could run circles around it on both performance and character..but if you havent seen my XT6..its kinda loaded with character:lol: . The EA82s ..to me personally..are a great inexpensive car..great to learn to work on..very forgiving to owners ...stupidity? My old 92 wagon have me many happy years and miles of dependable dependable service and I want another one to share DD service with the Imp. There is plenty of knowledgable help out there for when you get in a bind with the mechanics..and they are just plain easy to keep running ( usually) I am very comfortable under the hood of one ( and since you are new I dont know if you noticed I am female and I do 98% of my work by myself) Now axles...LOL..wont touch them without someone in person to help.
  10. It could just be a bad tire...super cheapo tires many times are "out of round" I remember the Futuras from Pep Boys were notorious for that a few years back...this I know cause I had many cars that I put Futuras on. I am learning my lesson of cheap tires... I tossed some cheapies on my XT6 and they ...well suck...no grip in snow..same small vibration...yet the Goodyears on my Imp...Wow..I am actually looking forward for some snow to play in..just need to swap my front suspention to finish the small lift the car is getting. And my Loyale had Cooper snow tread on the front..ran them non-stop for 4 years...awesome tires..Planning on going with Coopers on the XT6 soon. I would have them rebalanced and if its still there...just keep an eye on the CVs and run them...Buckys bad shake wouldnt show up until 45 mph then it would go away at 50 but come back with a vengence at exactly 73
  11. Those are the same style hubcaps I had on Bucky..I just repainted them ( backwoodsboy has them now) as seen here next to Rocky
  12. Mary...unless I have to work I am still planning on being there...Let me know what time you would like me/us to show ( Tommy is iffy..there is a Hockey game and he is sooo die hard). I am debating on bringing Rocky up to show off...You havent seen my XT6 is person have you? You still have to tell me what to bring.. I would feel wierd bringing nothing
  13. My old Loyales temp guage would barely move off the cold in the winter..but in the summer it would go to about 1/4..And still throw awesome heat...just one of thier quirks..My XT6..well who knows what temp thast thing runs...Used to run on the hot side ( according to the guage) pulled the t-stat..dropped to alittle below half..put an OEM t-stat in..back up to the hot side ( after flushing etc) I am going to put an aftermrket temp guage in it for my own piece of mind. subaruguru..sounds like you have a clogged heater core.. try the reverse flush first..if nothing not to much comes out..try blowing compressed air through it..works great..did it on my old newspaper delivery Taurus and after had blazin heat
  14. Welcome to the board. First off ..your gas mileage is lower cause of 2 reasons...4WD and the fact its an AT...that AT is cursed and the weak point of the car..many members swap it to a 5 spd cause it will gain some speed and the gas mileage will go into the higher 20s low 30s...if it was a FWD model..you would be in the high 30s to 40s if the car is running right. Try getting a $20 O2 sensor and replacing it..might help some Yes swap the timing belts...not a big deal to do ..use the search here on the board..there is a step by step in the USRM ( ultimate subaru repair manual)..On a good note..if you break one of the belts..it doesnt matter its a non-interference motor. I bought my old 92 Loyale wagon from a dealer 5 years ago for $600..FWD 5 spd ..It was just adopted by a great loving family who could fix the things I couldnt...I dont think you paid too much honestly..not from a dealer. OH! and if you are new and going to talk about the car..you know you have to post pics...we all are picture hos here.
  15. It was $245 total ...not too bad.It could have been alot worse. When he explained about what..by law...they had to do if it was rusted too bad. ( the professional repair and proof)
  16. Bring it over here..I will get that wheel off for ya;)
  17. What Gary said..Also remember that the turbos are more prone to head gasket failure..unless properly maintained.
  18. And the answer from the tech is........a bad previous replacement..some rust under the windshield ( we fixed it ) causeing some pressure...and the heat from the day along with a rapid cool off..toss it all together and..CRACK. He even said he had 5 cases this year when it was hot of his replacement window cracking..on the stand. It took the tech over 2 hours to do this job..and that was with me helping. His words were..who ever did the previous repair..either to fix a leak or something..was a clueless moron...we had to pull almost a whole tube of silicone out from under the one trim piece...ending up bending both( not bad though )..and bending out the lower cowl ...note to self..I have to reseal that today. On a good note..I was suprised at the LACK of rust under the windshield..very minor or he would have refused to put the window back in until it was professionally repaired and proof shown. Now I have to clean out a bunch of stuff from the garage to make room to bring him inside..watch the For Sale section I will be getting rid of alot of stuff ( OK not alot) tossing alot out and if you have stuff being stored here it needs to go.ASAP.. or its getting tossed or used for welding practice and then tossed...I need the room
  19. When an axle goes bad it can make funny things happen...OR you might have a loose castle nut..Just a possibility...watch the tire wear..get a new axle..tighten and re-tighten everything..Also have the wheels aligned...you should be good to go..and invest in a BFH..they can be your best friend;) :-p OH..you did check your ball joints and tie rod ends didnt you?
  20. Its a common thing with the rims to rust onto the car..heck after a couple months they will be stuck again...I usually spray with some PB Blaster and use a BFH ( like a sledge) and just tap it off..all it usually takes is 2 or 3 hits. Your movement sounds like a wheel bearing BTW..have you changed them recently? noticed any shaking or wierd tire wear?
  21. Umm....only if she is a shallow B..which the majority seem to be. Real women will see certain kinds of dirt( we are not talking the never geta bath dirt) as a sign of a working man. The gals I know who arent shallow find men who do stuff like construction, mechanics SEXY ( note my husband is a carpenter...something about that tool belt..prrrrrrrr ) Real chicks dig scars tattoos and grease ...Of course us real chicks ( Darlingchip,Leaking Oil, Myself) usually have some of our own and we are the ones who will do as much of the work ourselves WOW..took this off topic huh? So Jess..when we havin a girls work on your Brat party?
  22. I dont wear glove cause I like to feel what I am doing.....Anyway..Glad you guys are having fun with Buck...I have now come to the conclusion that I have no reason to post on the Old school forum anymore...WOW ..just thought of that:-\.
  23. Hey..you are doing better then me..I still have yet to do an axle..lucky you..have John to show ya how
