I recently got a 97 Outback in which the clutch seems weak. It's a hydraulic clutch, and I've never had one before. It seems fine after first starting it and pumping it some, but then seems to lose it's pressure. Any way of adjusting it? Is it ever necessary to change the fluid, or bleed the system? Thanks for any responses!

I've always had 2.2L engines in my Subarus, but am considering a 99 OB w/ the 2.5 (5MT). I've read of problems with the 2.5s though. What exactly is the problem(s) with them, and how expensive is it when repair(s) is/are necessary? And at what mileage do these problems typically come? (This one has 47,000miles). Also, how much worse gas mileage will the 2.5L have vs. the 2.2 (both with MT)? Thanks!!!!

I've taken my 93 impreza 1.8L to a mechanic friend to see about getting the timing belt & front crank seal replaced. He says there are actually two timing belts and that he'd need a special tool to replace them. Can anyone tell me if he's correct, or perhaps has looked up the wrong car or model. I know the 85 wagon I had once had a dual timing belt...just wondering if the 93 impreza is the same way. Thanks for the replies!!

The 96 Outback wagon I just purchased gets poor FM reception in my area. The car originally came from Oregon and now is in Iowa. I know from experience that some radios have a fine tuning adjustment for reception. Anyone had any experience with fine tuning the Subaru radios? (This is the stock, Subie AM/FM Cassette model). Is there a fine tuning adjustment I should look for? Thanks for the feedback!!!!!

I just purchased a 96 Legacy Outback wagon. I have a 93 Legacy wagon that I'm now going to sell (anyone interested?). My question is this: are the frames the same on these two wagons? I'd like to take the trailer hitch off my 93 and put it on the 96 (it's a heavy duty, U-Haul hitch). I haven't done any measuring yet. Should it work? Thanks for the feedback!!!!

In my original post I said legacy OR outback. I agree that the legacy is basically the same car, though I wouldn't mind the 15inch tires--bit more clearance. I use my 93 legacy wagon for getting into some pretty tough places to cut firewood! And I also agree that there are lots of 5sp trannies out there, problem is they're not very close to me! Good advice on holding out for one till I get desperate. I think I can wait . . .

I'm considering getting another Legacy/Outback wagon ('96-99). I've always preferred a manual tranny, but there are so few of them out there for sale. I'm beginning to wonder if I should include the AT in my searching. My question is HOW RELIABLE ARE THE ATs IN THIS MODEL RANGE OF LEGACY OR OUTBACKS? Do they tend to have problems that could cost me an additional $2000? Thanks for the help!!

When the car first stalled, I suspected it might be the battery since its life was about over anyway. New battery installed, the light was still on, so I had it checked out and the alt was not charging, hence the first rebuild. Upon putting the rebuilt alt back on, the light was off (I ASSUMED all okay and recharging as normal), but the same day the light came back on, another test soon indicated it NOT charging, and hence the second rebuild job. After that, it lasted a very short time with the light off, then it came on and the alt has since gotten very hot. When I unhook the main plug, it starts okay and the alt does not get hot. I'm not sure about the diodes being replaced. I'll look into it, though. Thanks. Any more ideas or tips are greatly appreciated!

I have alternator trouble with my 93 legacy. I put in a new battery thinking that was the problem, then had the alternator rebuilt, after which it went bad (or something caused it to go bad). After the guy rebuilt it the second time it went bad again. Any suggestions? If there is a short, any suggestions of where to find it?
