Painting the hatch, need some suggestions....
LUVMYBRAT replied to 75subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
As a seasoned professional, DONT PAINT IT! The car looks good. maybe a decal or two but no paint. As for the wheels well, take and media blast to get really clean, then starting with course and working up to fine, that would be oh 100grit to 600grit, sand the top portions of the fins of the turbine wheels along with the outer ring, doing this will polish them up to a satin finish, at this point paint un-sanded areas with black then clearcoat entire wheel, along with Dark tinted windows the whole black white contrast will really stand out. -

Things to look for in '84 Brat?
LUVMYBRAT replied to Jurrel's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
as an t-brat owner its like this, a subaru is a subaru, for those that rust, all brats rust in the wheel wells and in the box around the shock mounts, rocker panels are not excluded either, the Auto behind the motor is prone to be on its way out sooner or later, EA81T well I've had three and only one was bad, take care of it and it will last. In any case give the car a good look over and talk him down as much as possible on the price:grin: -

do you already have an anolog dash? -
well I've been getting the Brat dialed in, still got a couple of trinkets to put on the inside yet. Drove it over the hill on my commute last night and this morning and I feel good about the trip so I wouldn't mind the weather. Caboobaroo has to work til noon or so and then he thought of heading down, he was gonna help drive the 82 wagon that Zeke is buying. I would like to meet up with some more people , put a few faces to names and check out some rigs but if the majority says no then so be it.

Well I've had this for a little bit already but here is the newest member to my fleet. 78 BRAT with jump seats, addon air and 5 jackmans to boot! http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/member.php?uid=435 I saved it from a salvage yard:banana: and it cost me about ........lets see it was???? ooh oooh thats right, I scored it for FREE! The local yard had this and because I do so much business with them he decided to give it to me, it was in better shape before I actually talked to him. between when I first saw it and when he decided to give it to me there was a load of dead washer and dryers and even some fridgerators dumped on it, so most of the dents came from that:( but hey its FREE.

I'd love too if we can get a little closer to the border between states possibly. I know Denver's not that far and there are more of you guys down that way, I'm just limited with time and 2hrs there and back just burns up too much time. The summit area between Laramie and Cheyenne although close to me has some good camping and trails I believe. I might even be able to convince the wife to drive one of the family so I can show off two:rolleyes: . Thats if two are running. oooh....oo.. I do have two running a T-coupe and a Wagon:banana: .

Need some quick answers. Looking at a 1980 hatch, build date of 6/80 is it single range 4wd? couldn't tell, sticker was missing. Pulled up only one click but car has tranny issues and wasn't sure if that was affecting it. E71/81? Looked at the valve cover and saw no sticker so I know its not a hydro but forgot to look at block. 5spd/4spd? Lady said it was 5? has a sparkly ball for shift knob, couldn't tell? tried gears but was told again that tranny was shot. Heres the issue. I'm pretty sure I'm buying no matter what, Less than 100.00 bucks . White 4wd hatch had no gl/dl designation so I'll assume dl. body in fair condition, little rust in the doors, interior filthy das has major crack, will definitely need new carpet. seats need covering. plain silver steelies. Glass is all good, rear qtr window may need new latch mechanism. front bumper bent and rear bumper missing a pad. headlights(single round) and bezels and taillights all good. Has slanted radio console! Over all I think its a score! Next questions? If it is a 5spd single range, will a 4spd D/R be a direct bolt in? i believe so?

Cant find rims to save my life. **FOUND EM!**
LUVMYBRAT replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Off Road
I've got a set of 14's:brow: , and yea they came off a luv, but mine are a white western star type spoke rim. -
well I decided that the 2wd car is going to be a parts unit. I'm taking the complete motor and lower suspension for my brat. I found out last owner put new knuckles ball joints and a few other things in it, and its also a hydro motor. All needed items for the brat. So the 2.2 swap will have to wait, hmmmmm... maybe put in t-coupe with bad motor..

what exactly does pearl do to paint?
LUVMYBRAT replied to ironhydroxide's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes, alot of you are right in some areas. Pearls are made of mica and they reflect light in different colors at different angles. That is called "flop" They can also be sprayed and mixed several ways. Mix it in the paint (or base caoat) and it will have an effect on the color as a whole, mix it in a clear (or mid coat) and it have an effect on the flop. Each coat in a mid coat will intensify the flop. Special colors such as "chameleon" "harlequin" and other are pearls as well. Pearls in the paint are usually two stage systems(basecoat/clearcoat) and the others are considered three stage (basecoat/midcoat/claercoat) systems. With contacts in the paint community you can probably mix whatever you want. Although that sounds cool beware, if you dont record the exact amounts measured and mixed, pray that you never have to respray it! Most paint companies have a variety of special colors or "custom colors" to pick from that are already cataloged and have formulas calculated. Ask you local jobber to see their chip books of special colors, you'd be suprised to see what they actually have available. This makes it easier on everyone and lastly the difficulty of spraying any of the colors rests solely on the operator of the spray equipment, I've been in the industry for almost twenty five years and am not afraid to spray anything. Mind you if your paying some one to do "special work" you will be subject to "special" prices as well if you know what I mean. -
1978 Subaru Brat - Need Parts / Donor Vehicles

I've read a number of threads about the whole 2.2 swap intp EA81's using just the motor and a few that are tryin to use everything, tranny and engine. The last one out here seems to be themixtoo's swap into a brat using the complete drive train, rear diff, suspesion and ect... Now he is adding a lift along with it that seems to be testing his abilities he getting there but I was thinking along those same lines. I've come across a 2wd 82/85? coupe and I also have sitting around a complete EJ2.2 awd parts car. Well you know where this is going, what a cool sleeper car it would be. I have enough 4wd drive cars and dont see the need to add a lift to this particular project. Overall whats going to be the biggest stumbling blocks to get over? Seems like rear suspensions and front suspensions stick out in my mind. I know that the tranny tunnel needs modification to, but hey what are plasma cutters and welders for anyways, ha ha. So tell me what you think? Should I get a project in motion?

Get a thread chaser, that might straighten out the threads, most mechanic shops should have one you could borrow, that or pay them to do it. How bad is rust? are rear shock mount areas in bed suffering from cancer? what about the rocker panels? major holes? a little wheel well rust is probably the last part that I'd worry about. 400.00 well thats not bad, but remember your in a salvage yard, a pawn shop of sorts for cars. Lay out 300 cash and tell him to throw in some used tires, you've got a 50/50 chance at scoring the unit at your price, tell him how much work it might take to straighten out the crossthreaded plug hole. At any rate dont give in right away.

I think I already know the answer which is yes but I thought some piece of mind from the masses would re-affirm my thoughts. I have come across a 83/85? 2wd coupe, not in bad shape but 2wd. I seem to have enough stuff layin around to do a 4wd drive conversion and was curios to any red flags on the issue? I know these things for sure need to be swapped, gas tank, rear suspension,4wd struts, tranny, and addition of tranny tunnel bracketry for 4wd. Anything else?
