Would giving it a flush via one of those Prestone kits accomplish the same?

Everybody's got something different in mind when they picture their dream car... Down at work, everybody thinks I'm crazy 'cause I want to take this road lice (their term, not mine. :madder: ), lift it, and put 27" tires, brushguard, skid plates, and a CB in it. I just blame it on the redneck in me . Maybe the mural owner's got a bit of hippy in 'em. Ain't nothing wrong with that...

Syncro and CV replacement?
the_bard replied to LJRacing91's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Replace the driveshafts instead of the CV joints... from what I've heard, replacing the CV joints themselves is difficult and requires specials tools. Swapping out the driveshafts isn't anything major... I managed to do it with limited tools (the most unusual was a 3/16" pin punch), in about an afternoon. Do a search on the USMB... there's a good guide to it on here. As for the tranny... I've heard somewhere on the board of somebody repairing that dreaded 3rd gear synchro, but I can't remember 'xactly who it was. From what I heard, though, he pulled the tranny out, took it apart, rebuilt the synchro, then put everything back in. It'll probably be easier to find a replacement tranny, and swap it in. -
Next summer I'm probably going to end up slapping a 3" Ozzified lift on that Subaru Wagon that I keep dreaming/talking about getting, then throwing a set of 27" tires on it. When I do that, it throws off the original speedometer, due to the final gearing being different. There are aftermarket programmable speedometers out there (googling for cost, right now...), and I've got a few questions about them, that I can't seem to find anywhere else... 1. This programmable business... looks like they come in two types... either flip a set of dip switches for the proper gearing (which I assume means you have to do some manual "figuring" to get the proper gearing), or a measured mile (hit a button, drive a measured mile, hit the button again, it figures out how long it took you to get there, and it does the calculating for you). Any suggestions either way? 2. Some of 'em include an odometer... can you set this initially (so I don't end up having to add two diferent odometers to get the correct mileage)? This ties in with the next question... 3. Do I have to mount the new speedo outside of the dash, or can I replace the original? Thanks y'all ;D

Sounds like another Trashwagon... get the Fox in here!

Good U-Pull it Junk yards around Brattleboro VT?
the_bard replied to RallyKeith's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That actually sounds like a great idea... I wonder if they give group discounts? I dial the phone: "Um, hi. I'm part of a group of nationwide Subaru enthusiasts... (at this point the Cahill guy's rolling his eyes and resisting the temptation to beat his head against the wall)... and I was wonderin' if y'all had any problem with a bunch of us Northeastern guys sorta descended on your yard all at once on a particular day? (sounds of thumping as the counter guy goes into convulsions)... I'll take the silence to mean yes. We'll let you know when we'll be stopping by. Oh, and do you offer group discounts?..." dialtone... -

Keep in mind, I heard it second-hand... haven't put too much interest in finding it yet, seein' as I haven't gotten that new Subie. I just did a search across google, and couldn't find it... ain't in the yellow pages, either, from what I can see. Found the original post here Shows what my memory's like... Hoosick Falls, not Hudson Falls. Found a Cahill's Auto Parts located there, on Rt. 7. Wonder if that's what kevinsUBARU was talking about. Also have a friend down at work with the last name of Cahill... wonder if there's a connection there, too -

Chrikey. You aren't all that far away from me... Hey guys, there's another Northeasterner here!!! Ahem. Anyway. I've heard there's a junkyard up near Hudson Falls that's nearly 95% Subaru's. Haven't been to it yet, though, or found out what it's name is. Sure would like to find it, though... when I get enough time, I guess. -
Ain't that called preventative maintenance? All the work you go through replacing parts until you hit the part that really needed to be replaced in the first place

As usual, I'm wrong . According to here, a candle "is defined as 1/60 of the intensity of a black body, or ideal radiator, at the temperature at which platinum solidifies (2,046°K). " Where do these scientists come up with this stuff?
-
If'n I remember right, k is used to denote candle units. In laymen terms, it's basically a measurement of how many candles it would take to output the same amount of light. Or so the story goes... don't know what the official explanation is, but Google ought to be able to find it without too much effort.

Does it happen on cold mornings, and quit suddenly after anywhere from fifteen seconds to a minute after starting? And sound like a rapid hard tapping sound? 'Cause that's what my Loyale's doing right now, and I'm trying to figure out exactly what to do about it...

Some pics of the BRAT on the road
the_bard replied to subarubrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Alrighty... I'm going to put this on my list of projects to be completed at some point during my lifetime. That Brat is nothin' short of awe-inspiring... -
It doesn't have a sister, does it? . Might be worth plane tickets down there...

Took advantage of that program a few times myself... gear pullers both times, I think. Basically, you buy the tool at their used price, then return it without any hassle, getting your money back. First time I went, they charged me $20 for a three jaw gear puller. The second time, for the same tool, they charged me $40 :brolleye:. Return it clean and in the same condition, and they have no problem at all with it. I just wish they'd tack on a five dollar charge or something, just to get a little profit off "renting" them out. I'd feel better, at least, and it'd at least help pay for their time handling the return and what not. :santa:

That's no problem with me... I'll know who to go for when tax seaon comes around, and I can afford that new Subie. He's got to have at least one spare one laying around, right?

From what I've heard & seen, the only way to really stop it is to either cut & weld, or POR-15. The sprays/brush-on-stuff work, but for a limited time... they're what I'm using right now as a temporary stop gap to hold my Loyale together until I pick up its replacement. If'n you're gonna be cutting and welding later this spring, I'd go this route, and fiberglass-patch any rot holes. I wouldn't trust the foam stuff... I've heard too many thoughts about it holding moisture against the sheetmetal.

We all need to get together, pool all of our money, and rent out a (super)freighter. Then hold a communal wrenchin' party -
Need Help Convincin' The Fiance
the_bard replied to the_bard's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yep... haven't started calling around yet, though. Tax time's still a little far off to be actively searching, but I'm keeping an eye on the Want Ad Digest, seeing what comes and goes. I don't think that's much of an issue here... she's got her '96 Saturn that she drives, and she's pretty fond of it. She's actually happy with my Loyale, too... loves the fact that it's manual, and has no problem driving around with me in it. Maybe I need to let her drive around in it more often, actually *thoughtful*. She doesn't have much in the way of mechanical skills/knowledge, but she trusts my judgement... I've fixed enough problems in her Saturn and my Subie that she trusts me. I'm really starting to think that this is just an outlet for her... she's got the habit of getting stressed out, and releasing it on something that's not really related to her reason for getting stressed. She's on clinical right now, graduating in May, working another job outside clinical, worried about finishing her thesis during the next semester, and planning the wedding. She really doesn't have the time for any other projects right now, or hobbies (which is what I think she views my future Subaru as). Rather than come right out and say that, or deal with it, she's letting go by attacking my Subaru plans, because I have time for it... does that make sense? I've known this gal since freshman year in high school... gotta be getting close to ten years or so, and she never fails to confound me . Gotta love her though... -
HELP, New to Sub's...random engine shutdown
the_bard replied to Highway 101's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
PAP = Pick A Part, junkyard, U-Pull-It... place where you go to pull parts out of cars that have gone to heaven. I've had a few problems with wet disty's, too... last one, '86 Pontiac Bonneville went through a two foot deep puddle at about 55 mph. The driver took it to the parking lot, shut it off, then started it up four hours later. Ran it for about five minutes, then shut it off. Five hours afterwards, it wouldn't start. He had it towed to a shop... had lots of water in the disty (we had pull the cap off, cleaned it up, but I didn't have the guts to disassemble the disty itself... the engine hadn't seen a tune-up or mechanic in years). Sucked a lot of water through the carb, too, from what the mech said. -
After the wedding's over, and tax time comes around, I'm going to be looking for a new car. For those of y'all that haven't been following, the rails and floor pan on my '92 Loyale are rusting out, it needs new shocks, and a driveshaft on the left front. There's not much sense in continuing the repairs on her if I can't stop the rust, and I can't Thing is, I really want another Subaru, either a wagon or a hatchback, from the eighties. Preferably an EA82, since I'm more familiar with it from the Loyale, but the lack of a timing belt/chain on the EA81's sound really nice, too. Either way, the car is fairly easy to work on. I like the way they drive, the way they're styled, and one would make a good project car (a lift, brushguard, skidplates, lights, etc...) Problem is, the fiance wants something "reliable, like from the 90's. Something with lower mileage. Something that's not going to rust out." We've argued it back and forth, me trying to understand what's not reliable about the Sube's from the 80's (excepting rust), and trying to explain why the lack of a timing belt makes a car more reliable. I guess it doesn't help that she's viewing the Subaru's as more of a hobby car :boohoo: . At this point, we've agreed to not discuss it until after the wedding on Christmas Eve. I've also compromised, saying that I'll look for cars other than Subaru's, and from the 80's to the 90's. I know, and I know she knows, however, that I still have my heart set on one of those 80's Subaru's. She's not keen on me buying anything off the board, Ebay, or anything I haven't seen in person. Definitely doesn't trust the long distance buying/selling. She's giving me the impression that she's not going to be happy unless the car needs absolutely no work at all, too. Question: How do y'all handle this? Most of you have feminine significant others, from what I've seen, and some of you are really lucky to have gals that participate . Logical explanations haven't worked, nor can I explain anything mechanical to her... makes it extremely hard to fight "I want you to get something reliable" when I don't understand her definition of reliable (besides "something from the 90's). ERG!:madder:

Yeah, I know they're a type of rim :brolleye: . I just have no clue why a particular set of rims are called pugs, and some ain't. While I'm doing research on lifting that wagon I'm dreaming about, I keep running across references to 'em... seems they're in high demand. Just wonderin' what all the fuss is about...

I've heard that a twenty year old car is considered an antique, at least in New York. A quick search on google yields a this page which claims it's twenty five years. Knew I was close ;o)
