  1. How many miles are on it? Subaru extended the warranty on the '00 OBW external headgasket to 100,000 miles (or eight years). Simply put, if it's below 100,000 miles, a Subaru dealership should be able to dump the coolant additive, run it through for a bit (I think they said like 15-30 minutes), and see if it's still leaking at the deadline. If it is, they swap that headgasket. We ended up doing exactly that with my wife's 2000 OBW.
  2. Get a set of those automotive stethoscopes, from what I've heard (no pun intended). This is after I misdiagnosed a timing belt tensioner that was going south as cold piston slap. Sure didn't sound to me like it was coming from the t-belt area, but I was proven wrong. *shrug*
  3. So whatcha gonna do with the Imp? Edit: Never mind. Reread the first post, and opened my eyes this time
  4. Google Is Your Friend ;o) http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/faq_rotorsystems.shtml
  5. If you've got the time/space to wrench on it, and a source of spare parts, I'd say it's worth $500. I picked my '97 OBW off the back row of a small town used car dealer, who ended up swapping in a '95 EJ22 for me. Final price, $4,000. 126k on the chassis. Swap out the tranny, take a good look at the rest of the car, and do whatever work needs to be done on it. Then sell it, or keep it (there's something to be said for a car that doesn't have payments accompanying it). If you do decide to part it out, though, you've got a line started already. I wouldn't mind the rear spoiler/dust deflector if D1Driver doesn't take it... along with the front grill, and that piece of trim that runs along the top of the hatch. Wouldn't mind a cargo cover, if it's got it too.
  6. Ok... I gotta toss another wrench in the conversation. One of the huge reasons I love the '95 EJ22 that's sitting in my '97 OBW is the peace of mind that comes with a non-interference design. My timing belt heads south without me (or the tensioner, etc.), and I'll be stuck on the side of the road waiting for the wife to bring me some extra tools, a replacement belt, the Chilton's, and a printed topic from the USMB. Much better than waiting on the side of the road for the wife to drop off a new engine
  7. Not to take this further off-topic, but at least he's dredging up a lot of topics to be refreshed, providing a lot more search material ;o)
  8. Now there's an idea that I like even better, ShawnW! Been meaning to get a new CB anyway...
  9. Awwww... come on guys, that's no fun! I do get the point, however. I'll take a look at a deck with cd, weatherband, and aux. inputs.
  10. My '97 OBW definitely has the separate door/hatch indicators... and I could be wrong, but I swear my wife's '00 OBW has 'em, too.
  11. What I want: To be able to take output from my laptop (mp3's, mostly) and play it through my '97 OBW's speakers, while retaining the ability to listen to the weather band provided by the stock deck. What I've got: Stock '97 OBW with stock speakers. An old Sony Xplod deck (CDX-CA650X) that convienently has a set of RCA's in. Old Dell laptop with a 1/8" stereo headphone jack. My thoughts on the "best" setup: Install the Sony deck in the second slot under the original deck. Connect the current speakers to the Sony. Run a 1/8" stereo adapter to RCA from the deck to somewhere convienent in the cabin, so I can plug the laptop in. Find somewhere that I can install a pair of (cheap but functional) speakers to connect to the old deck. Configure the fade so all playback is out of the two speakers. Benefits: I can play cd's, mp3's (via laptop), and my weatherband radio. Cons: Normal radio is limited to the two speaker setup, since I imagine the weatherband radio requires the actual antenna. Or I'd need to find some way to install a second radio antenna. I'd have to find a place to install the second set of speakers. I'd imagine I'd want to run new power lines to the second radio so bad power/ground things don't happen. Then there's the wiring to the new speakers, too. Also, the Sony deck has a bad pot (or whatever they use lately) for the volume control that won't change if you spin it too quickly. Someone wanna poke holes in my theory , or provide me with a better idea?
  12. I can't see some sort of water trap doing much for mist, right? Makes me wonder if the stock air intake has got something to constrict the airflow, then opening up afterwards, in attempt to dry the air a little bit. Or if something like that would even work. I just got to thinking about the carb icing in an old Cessna that I used to fly in. As a side note, I'd never have thought that I'd actually run across the words "Oswegatchie River" on the USMB ;o)... I grew up (1st through 8th grades) in Oswegatchie proper.
  13. I've used it both the fuel tank and the oil. Haven't had any problems with it, but I couldn't tell you that it solved all my problems, either. I definitely haven't considered using it like Seafoam, sucking it down the intake... not sure I'd want to.
  14. Aww.... c'mon, it's not all that bad. I'd still want to drive around in a "Lezbaru" (heck, I like women too! Can't say I blame 'em, myself...) a lot more than I'd want to drive around in a "why don't you just dump your gas tank on the ground" Hummer. Now, that said, where'd I leave my camcorder... ;o)
  15. Can't say anything about the '96 Legacies, but my '97 OBW has got rear discs. According to cars101.com, the '96 LS, GT, and LSi sedan/wagons all had the rear discs standard. The L's had 'em as optional. Good huntin'!
  16. On a related note (and hopefully I won't steal the thread), anybody know a good way to get ATF out of upholstery? Gallon jug of it leaked before I could get it to someone who'd properly dispose of it... and the cargo mat didn't quite contain it. Gave me a chance to make the wife feel guilty, though, since it came out of her Outback
  17. Get redirected to www.w3.org ? My browser (Firefox) redirects me to there, too, using the above link. Looks like he miscopied the link. Fixed one should be: http://www.speedyperformanceparts.com/performance/brand.php?make=subaru&year=1996&model=legacy&partname=clutch_kit&brand=exedy Nope. That didn't work for me, either (server complained about a malformed URL), so I tried: http://www.speedyperformanceparts.com/performance/basket.php?makeid=31&year=1996&modelid=502&partid=137&brandid=1159
  18. Had a little adventure with Yahoo Maps/Mapquest the other day... planned a trip from Albany, NY to Pittsfield, MA. YM decided to send me on a "shortcut" over a good sized hill/mountain rather than take me along Route 20 into Pittsfield proper. As a result, I ended up taking the Geekmobile with all its 3" of ground clearance up a "dead end" road that progressively degraded into a washed out gravel trail. The neighbor that came out to check on me mentioned something about it being a 1890's horse & buggy trail between New Lebanon and Pittsfield. I checked the topo maps on terraserver.microsoft.com, and located the road... there's that "unmaintained but public" dashed line extending from the road (Old Mountain Road, btw). There's a couple more throughout the hills, too. The neighbor had mentioned something about it being mostly washed out, along with the potentially huge obstacle of a beaver pond being located in the middle of the road towards the top... this got my curiousity going. Anybody know anything the area, and whether it'd be worth looking into for exploration purposes?
  19. I had a '00 with an obvious external headgasket leak, so I went through this myself. According to cars101, the recall should cover your year, and you're under the 8 year / 100,000 miles. 4 oz. over every 3-4 months doesn't sound like a huge leak to me, so I don't know if they'll find evidence of an external leak or not. You'll find out one way or another, right?
  20. Well... it's older than any other Subaru I've seen, so I guess it counts for something. The property itself looks abandoned... boarded up house falling into disrepair, a couple of older cars/trucks on the lawn that look like they haven't moved in years. The kind of place I wouldn't want to get caught snoopin' around. It's located on Rt.20, a few miles west of Nassau if I remember the location right. I'll be heading past it again Saturday (currently "commuting" from Albany to Pittsfield, MA until further notice), so I can stop by the neighbors and get some more info on it (who owns the place, contact info, etc.)
  21. While I was on my way to Pittsfield, MA yesterday, just before the NY/MA border, I happened to spy this off to the side: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/Subaru3.jpg. I was excited... right up until I realized it was in horrible condition, and was currently being used to store junk/trash. There are times I hate NY...
  22. I'll second Josh's write-up... I followed it loosely, using 600 grit wet, then 1000 wet, finishing with 2000 wet. Used some toothpaste I received free as a promotion to polish them up real good (I ought to send a letter to the company letting them know it's great for a polish, but I've got no clue how it is for a toothpaste ). Wife had some clear protectant spray she used on the centerpieces for our wedding reception left over, so I used it to spray a clear protectant layer over the headlight. Looks great now.
  23. I kinda like it... but I like hatchbacks. Ain't so sure about that big spoiler in the back, but it does kinda balance it out in a wierd kinda way.
  24. No sense of decency, either. Stealing the car probably gave them more time to yank the radio out. So why can't they take the time to find the right tools, rather than ripping the dash apart like that? Besides the "thrill of destruction", it's just pure lack of consideration for your fellow man. Sure wish they'd catch whoever did it, and provide the same lack of consideration for his health and well-being.
  25. I can't resist the geekdom oozing from my... (ok, that's enough). OMG = Oh My God. WTF = What The Fudge (clean version, use your head for the dirty version) 1OL -> LOL = Laughing OnLine (there are different interpretations) JDM = duh tYt3 -> Tyte = Tight y0 = yo (could be he meant yoke, which is the pitch/roll control in an aircraft, which would then relate to a steering wheel, but I'm gonna guess just plain yo.) !!!11!!eleventy!!1! = Lots of exclamations marks. Someone decided to let go of the shift key at some point, then be cute and spell it out. Disclaimer: I am not L33t, and thus the above interpretation may contain errors. Mimicking my lack of L33tness may result in ridicule.
