I am looking to ditch the wifes audi and get a legacy wagon but I'd like to get some inputs What year did the legacy come with a 2.5l turbo, what is the engine designator? Are the H6 engine parts expensive to purchase. (I've done the outrageous parts thing) And as far as reliability, which of the two engines hold up better. (I am extermely anal over the whole maintenance thing, I'm concerned about the long block holding up not the peripherials.

OK, heres the deal 1.9l TDI bottom end, 2.0l crossflow head, deck the pistons .030". this leaves a 9.5/1 c/r the rabbit turbo diesel exhaust manifold will bolt to the head with no mods I can fit a k04 turbo out of a audi 200 on that manifold. that turbo will make 26 psi of boost. so figuring combustion pressures @ a c/r of 9.5/1 with 24 psi, is equal that of a stock 1.9l TDI, which will go 250K mi. Rebuttals?

Q Man, 1. I use the car all the time so it has to be streetable 2. it is my huntin' / fishin' rig so I need it to be capable offroad 3. I would like to run lockers so I can have open on the road and locked for off road 4. I have come up with a design that will allow more travel and would like to complete the package with the locker idea 5. I like to do, or at least think up oddball stuff to do and see if it will work. EG. a friend and I have come up with a 450 - 500 hp 1.9l VW water cooled motor, that mathamatically will work for 200k Mi.

I went to the junky yard on sunday to pick up a radiator and looked at the front IFS diff out of a toy and a mitsu. they are all shifted to the passenger side with exceptionally long stubs on the drivers side. so, 1. Shorten the right stub 2. weld up and relocate the breather to the bottom side of the diff 3. Fab a mount for the diff 3. install the diff upside down 4. find matching gears for the rear 5. have custom axles made for the rear (cv on the outside, spider joint on the inside) 6. have driveline made or adapt stock to toy. How's it sound? Viable or just nuts? pros' cons' 1. can run it on the street 1. difficult 2. can put lockers in it 2. Umm Uhh nope can't think of anymore 3. Ground clearance!!

Jaws dawgs ride is fine, (drove home). I played around by the power lines in the sandy area for a couple of hours with a stock early legacy and a toy with some kinda ok tires. on my way back down I saw some mud on the left side of the paved road and decided to get the car a little dirty. So I carefully checked the bogs with my shovel and proceded to get a little nasty. when I had enough room to turn around I proceded to do so, however the side of the ruts from the "fo tee twos" gave out leaving me stuck. So a little walk and a 20 spot learned me what was probabally a pretty basic lesson. DON'T GO ALONE, WHERE YOU HAVE EVEN THE SLIGHTEST CHANCE OF NOT GETTING OUT.

Has anybody ever thought about using a toyota front diff in the bach of their EA? A little insane I know, but would this not allow the use of a air or cable diff lock?

I can weld and my buddy has a tubing bender so I can do the work myself. It's just a matter of getting the cheddar to buy the tubing. I'm just wondering if anybody has hit any snags on the way.

My Exhaust hangs really low. I'd like to fix it but I can't seem to find a replacement Y pipe for it that someone hasn't hacked the cat out of. any ideas?

You can use your Air cond. pump as a source for compressed air. some barbed fittings, air line, heavy duty hose clamps, and a cheap 5 to 10 gallon air tank from Harbor Freight tools should get the job done. Just remember to put a breather filter on the intake side of the A/C pump and put a little air tool oil in the compressor to keep it working. wire the compressor to a fused toggle and a relay to run the clutch. As far as the power inverter you MUST have a good alternator. Also spend the money on one that will do more than you need, rather than come up short when you need it most. I'll set up a schematic of the air system and post it in my photo gallery.

Tell me where to meet ya boss and I'll try to get the other offroad guys that I know here on the base to roll with us. PS. SHOULD WE PACK ANY TOOLS ( PICKS SHOVELS RAKES)?

The issue with welding it up is that I use the car on a daily basis. it also acts as my wifes backup for her P.O.S. Audi (she's driving the soob as we speak). I also would prefer not to have put an axle in or swap a diff every time I wanted to run my daily driver off road. Thanks for the suggestion Qman, and after we sell the Audi and get the wife a Legacy wagon I'll probabally weld the diffs in my GL

I think I just lucked out on these. Mike put them on his rig in the late '80's or early '90's. However I found 13" rally tires by a company called Silverstone. Here is the link. http://www.taborrallyteam.com/silverstone/silverstone.html Look at the rallye S505's. You can order them in soft, firm, or hard compound and they're even FIA homologated (approved). Like that matters a damn!

I live on McChord AFB just south of Tacoma. I go out there for family time and fishin'.

nope didn't get that info was just too excited. Also this weekend I found a trick for the hatch. you can install loyale gas lift shocks for the hatch and your hatch will open really far. you have to install the left on the right and re drill the holes on one of the mounting plates. Also I just posted the pics of the tires and my li'l red wagon on the photo archives.

He had them on a rallyed out VW pickup that he used to do pre runs with. he used to race in the mid 90's so i think that is when he got them.
-
They're a 175/75 13 and 23" overall height

Its been a while but I just had to log on and show off my new tires. You see I've got this friend (Mike) and mike has one of everything, and several of most of it. I was explaining to him what a b!t(h it has been to get someone to cut loose with a set of 14" Peugeot wheels for a decent price. he then tells me he has a set of good BFG mud terrains IN A 13"!!! so, here they are all mounted up. Damn no camera OK pics to come.

Anybody Ever Bandsaw Apart An EA82T Head?
jaws dawg replied to NorthWet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I am realitively fresh in the subaru flat 4 realm but, I do know a thing or two about vw's and porsches. thicker head studs will have a tendency to snap the larger in diameter you go. the best studs for those applications are a large end tapered in the middle. This gives you the holding power of more thread contact, but lets the head studs expand and contract more evenly.
