  1. Thanks Subarunuts! I'll keep an eye out for the 80-82, worst case, I have to get an 83-84. Thanks Rick
  2. Hi, I am having trouble with my 84' brat as seen in other posts, and I was wondering what the manifold vacum pressure should be. I hooked a gauge up to the manifold, and it read about 5 points too low as to where the gauge says is normal. Thanks Rick
  3. I am pretty sure the former owner (badbrat84) had it rebuilt a CCR as stated in his for sale post, but I am not sure when or anything like that. I'll try the carb/manifold gasket, and check for the accel. pump check ball. If CCR rebuilt it I am going to trust that the float level is properly set and all. I am starting to agree with badbrat more about the manifold leak, as that would make a giant vacum leak of sort......but I'll have to check it out and see what's up with it. Thanks Rick
  4. That's funny, but I end up doing that anyway most of the time! Ha! Rick
  5. OK!!!! I've got it!!!!!! What about Bear Creek Lake park??? It's pretty darn close to Red rocks, but has a camp ground. The only bad thing is that I think you have to pay a couple bucks to get in to the park. What do ya think? (P.S. this is Rick, the owner of the login "TurboXT") Rick
  6. Yeah I think pulling the column would be easier in the long run as well. NOW comes another question....... What pedal clusters can I use??? Does it have to be from a Brat, or can it be from any EA81 manual?? Thanks much! Rick
  7. Never had a cherry bomb, or a glass pack. I've always just cut the muffler off and put a econo "turbo" muffler on. They kinda suck, so I just put a piece of pipe to the back where the muffler goes. Sounds all poppy and crappy, so I think the glass pack would help resonate the sound a bit. I have heard (don't know if it's fact, and my father told me this, so they may be better than the one's they had in 79' lol) that glass packs blow out after a while. I'm going to put a cherry bomb on my Brat once I get it smogged though. Rick
  8. That sounds like it could be it too. I once had an EA82 carbbed wagon, but it had this air leak...and would backfire all the time. I am not getting any backfires, but like I say, I don't know the EA81 that great. I will try the starting fluid around the base though...sounds like it will work for detecting a leak. I did notice that the coolant was really low in the radiator, and the over flow was empty.....that may have had something to do with the problem as well. Still has decent power (for 70 HP), so I think the heads are ok. Thanks Rick
  9. Thanks Ross, it's Carbbed, but I don't know if it has a computer or not. Rick
  10. Hi, I would like to swap out the auto transmission in my brat to a manual D/R, either a 5 speed from an EA82, or a 4 speed from an EA81. How hard is it to swap pedal clusters out from auto to manual? Thanks Rick
  11. Yes, there is no timing belt. And what I meant by the disty. sitting weird is it looked like it was fully retarded, or close to it. It may need to be there, but like I said, I am not too familiar with the EA81. It only makes this "ripping" sound when I am at WOT, as skip mentioned, so it's hard to tell where it's coming from. I was driving it tonight, and it seemed to run fine one time, but then it seemed to run worse, and have some lag, and even a little surging the longer I drove it. I will definatly try a can of "seafoam" thanks skip! Thanks guys, and if anyone else has any ideas, please post them! Any help is good help! Rick
  12. I am having trouble with my brat, it has a little bit of hesitation or stumbling when the car is up to temp. around say....1500 rpms where the car wants to die out, but if you slam the gas to the floor, the car takes off smoothly, no probelms. Just for the heck of it I tried replacing the coil, that seemed to help a little bit, but it was still stumbling...I replaced the plugs with new NGK's, and it was still the same. So I noticed the distributor cap looked a little strange where it was sitting, so I started the car, and I advanced the timing......hesitation gone.....but THEN it made a loud sort of a cracking rattling noise like a pulley was gonna fly off or a belt was slipping as the revs get higher from about 3000rpm up.....is this knock?? Is it a carb problem? Any help is good, as I know EA82's and ER-27's, but know VERY little about EA81's. Thanks Rick
  13. Nah, Subarus are like kids, I only need one. (says the guy with no kids) Rick
  14. Well, my wonderful brother just brought up the point that Red Rocks is a very central location for many of us. However, I do like the idea of the mountains. Can everyone's Soob make it up to Breck? Maybe Georgetown would be fun. Let me know. You can reply here, PM me on my cutie-ru username, or shoot me an email to bardllyan@yahoo.com. (P.S. This is cutie-ru on my brother's username)
  15. I bought Badbrat84's Brat last night.....guess I need to change my username. Just thought I would let you guys know that I gave up my XT6, for a BRAT! TTYL Rick
  16. My turbo was 7 psi when it ran. I believe that the wastegate is set at 7psi. It may just depend on the actual turbo, who knows. I think that's sweet your turbo'ing an AE-86! Have fun, don't blow her up! Rick
  17. You should drop an ER27 (6 cylinder 2.7L motor) into it! That would be sweet! Or I guess a EA82T would work too. Rick
  18. Thanks man! The shop in town I am going to hasn't got the dyno in yet, but they claim soon. I'll try to post some charts, and get as much info as possible. I hope they get it soon, cause I am itching to get started modding it. Rick
  19. Hey everyone, as most of you may know, I crashed my Turbo XT back in January, then got an 85' turbo wagon, I just recently sold the wagon and then bought an 89' 5 speed manual, full time 4wd XT6 that I have had my eye on. It's really nice, and I hope to be able to dyno it, and then start modding it. Thought I would give you guys an update, and now I need to change my login, unless I turbo my XT6. ha ha Rick
  20. Rotating components eh? *cough* like the output impeller? oops! Well I am gonna need to tear it down anyway, so I guess I'll have to get it re-balanced when I am done. I'll have to price it out and see if it's easier to get a whole other turbo. Thanks Rick
  21. Hi, I have an extra turbo from an EA82T so I think it's an IHI VF7 if I recall correctly. It looks like it was blowing oil everywhere (never had it in a car), as the wastegate actuator digaphram was filled with oil, and there was oil everywhere in the output side. I pulled it apart just for the heck of it, and haven't pulled the actual shaft out yet because I don't have a torx bit that small, but It looks like it's just a oil seal somewhere or the output impeller isn't sealing against the oil pickup quite right......am I going to knock it out of whack just replacing 1 oil seal or the output impeller, or will just taking the shaft out knock it out? And NO this is not the turbo in the wagon I am selling!!! The one that's in there works fine! Thanks Rick
  22. Hey, question, do all subarus have 4 wheel disk brakes? Just wondering, cause the 4WD turbo Wagon I am selling has 4 wheel disk brakes. I thought they had drums in the back? Thanks Rick
  23. Hey I got the power steering figured out on my 85 turbo wagon. I just got done hooking everything up and I had to jump the battery, but it turned right over, first crank. I need to tweak a few things, but it runs, well.... somewhat good. I need to take the BOV off that I had rigged up for my 5 speed manual XT, but I put the XT engine into the wagon! I did it! Yay! And now to see if I can get it to stay running, and then either sell it, or trade for an XT6. Rick
  24. oops! Yeah, that would have been the easier way, but who likes the easy way? (obviously not me) lol I think I can rig it up, or just not hook the lines up, who needs power steering anyway? I AM KIDDING!! Thanks Rick
