  1. thanks shadow, that'll keep me awake all night! I'd always wondered about the 3 main bearing issue, but no more! I'd suggest cryogenic tempering as a (possibly cost effective) tactic to add. Maybe an oil squirting kit for the undersides of the pistons too if you don't want to $$$$$ out for forged pistons.
  2. thanks guys, good idea Morgan. This is going to take off much slower than I'd hoped. grrr.
  3. Hey Michael, you're in luck, I've got a lot of spare time on my hands lately Do you have a new clutch kit yet? Does it have a clutch alignment tool with it? I'd recommend that you get two new throwout bearing clips from the dealership, as well as a new oil filter, and a new rear main seal from Napa. Do you need to have the car done in one day? You'll want to get the flywheel resurfaced, and Watt's Wheel downtown does it for $25, but it'll take a chunk of an hour or two out of the day. And they're not open Sunday. Give me a call whenever you'd like. Andy 263-3853
  4. you should be able to get longer lugs or a source for them at a local tire shop. good idea to do that, too. I'm not happy with how little sticks through on my wagon's 15"s. I've always checked my lugs and had the bad ones replaced at the machine shop when I get my rotors turned.
  5. thanks guys. I HAVE TO MOVE IN TWO WEEKS. THIS SUCKS!
  6. I found out part of the power loss problem on my wagon was due to the turbo flange having separated 75% from the rest of the crossover pipe! got that out and welded up (for free, thanks to Guy @ Muffler Mart) and will go back in soon. wagon should be a little more responsive. too bad this doesn't fix the half compression issue... this means I'll want to tweak the timing and run premium in it, as I have 2.5" open exhaust all the way.. thanks will!
  7. one could also use EA81T heads and run an MPFI setup. any chance of the spider intake fitting on an EA81T?
  8. i'll second or third the right tools recommendation. I once "lost" an LSD at the JY because I forgot my punch and tried using a screwdriver instead. One roll pin came out, the other ate my screwdriver. came back later with the punch and the LSD (and the axle for that side, hehe) were gone. Using a caveman hammer (big rock) is acceptable as long as you grunt a lot during use. I've done that a couple times when I didn't have Mr. Happy (5 pound sledge).
  9. I still don't have my 88 RX tranny wired into my 86 turbowagon. can anyone hook me up with a pinout diagram for an 88 RX transmission and a 1986 push button 5 speed transmission? please and thank you?
  10. rallyruss, those lines look nice! what did they run you? I notice you have your crossover pipe de-shielded? maybe put a small heas shield on top of it to radiate heat away from the oil filter?
  11. Rguyver rebuilt the engine 12k miles ago for Tyrel Neufeld in BC. I bought it from Tyrel and when installed, it turned out to have this compression problem. I found out from rguyver that Tyrel ran it at high boost and had overheated it once and had rguyver reseal it. Tyrel didn't bother to tell me this or I'd not have bought it from him. So I'm assuming that it's recently been overheated TWICE and I'd not want to reseal it again after I fix it, so I'm interested in the millwork. you're right though, i can check the heads and block myself.. i was trying to get a fixd on what kind of costs i'd be looking at. thanks!
  12. don't forget the minibar in the smuggler's hatch and the coin operated vibrating seats.
  13. SW, at least it wasn't your fault! go to the doctor, get that stiff neck looked at. don't forget to wear a neck brace to court I'd only owned my first turbowagon for two months when some @#$%@#$% in a suzuki sidekick or something rolled out of a blind driveway right in front of me; I barely had time to brake let alone downshift. Her excuse was that she couldn't see past the cars parked on the side of the road on either side of the driveway.. so she just rolled out as if it were safe! Good thing there are only SIX other driveways to the parking lot she was in. I didn't curse her out because I was in my work uniform, otherwise I probably would have found out how rude I'm capable of being... the good news? I paid $1000 for the car (financed it), got like $1600 from her insurance, paid off the car AND fixed it out of pull N save. had to chance the grille, hood, bumper, lower valance, A/C evaporator, radiator, radiator suport bar, and jack the bottom front crossmember straight, but I had money left over! later when I was trying to sell my barracuda (when it still ran) I thought about driving in circles downtown and wait for someone to hit me turning left from the inside of a particularly bad intersection that I'd had several near misses at.. just use it as an accident magnet and make some money that way
  14. thanks for the support. i did a little flyering on sunday, talked to a couple people who were nicely receptive. one guy has coolant leaks on a turbowagon. boy, i've been there before! subarubrat: not a bad idea on the paypal. i'll save that idea for if/when this has enough sucess to warrant that convenience.. I don't want to work with A/C because I can't evacuate an A/C system in an environmentally responsible way.. I haven't gotten to put a lift kit on one of my OWN cars yet so I wouldn't feel believable offering that service (not that I'd turn down someone who asked).. there are very few XT6es around here that I've seen, and the first one I find may be for MY turbowagon (can't resist the idea of the WRX swap).. I think i did miss the boat on the ticking lifters though.. I'll put that on the flyer when I need to make a second print run. I could manage the 6 lug conversion as my dad has a drill press, too. SM85: I will add timing belts to the flyer for the second print run as well. maybe HGs too. I'd be nervous about trying to rebuild someone's engine quickly out of the back of my car, maybe after I move? .. I don't have any of the equipment for rust repair; I have body parts listed so I could cind someone better doors or fenders though. no quarter panels .. trunk monkey might get me in trouble with the SPCA.. maybe if I drill holes or put louvers in the trunk lid, hm? I've decided that early evening is going to be the best time for me to go flyering; there weren't a lot of cars in the neighborhood i hit sunday afternoon... tex: i think i'm busy that day
  15. that high pitched ringing in your ears is the collective USMB squealing in jealousy at your purchase. it'll go away in a while
  16. not that i know of. anything like that would probably be a different size.
  17. what to do when I: am itching for an automotive project? need more work? don't like punching a clock? the answer: start my own private subaru repair business! I'm nervous about how sucessful it'll go but it's got to be better than what I'm NOT earning only working part time at a bar. I can do a ton of advertising going block to block in many local neighborhoods and putting these flyers on people's cars. if it goes well enough i'll see about a business license and that stuff.
  18. at some point I'm going to rehabilitate my turbowagon with the half compression engine. I pulled off the downpipe to get a hole in it welded up and to check out the exhaust ports in the heads. they aren't cracked, so I'm going to assume that the half compression is from valves or HGs. (the pistons rarely fail, right? is there an easy way to check without splitting the short block?) I'm going to have to put new HGs on when I take it apart anyway, and I plan to have the heads milled flat at a machine shop at that time. Should I have the shop mill the short block flat as well? thanks.
  19. i'd pimp that around. I'd want a sunroof though.
  20. you might unscrew the IAC from the top of the thermostat and see if it has any junk stuck in it.
  21. I'd vote for sliding the engine forward instead, with a second jack under the trans to tweak the angle. You can also use a wire brush on a drill or dremel to clean the studs and nuts for the DP, and use some antisieze goo when you reassemble.
  22. that's a LOT of custom work. some EA81 coupes were convertible-ized in the early 80s but they're hard to find and would probably not fit on an XT. your best bet is to talk to a custom hot rod shop and be ready to pay for it!
  23. hi there. yes, the glass is removeable. there are two black plastic panels with the obnoxious plastic screws. the sunroof can be unbolted after those trims are removed. there is supposed to be a sliding cover that goes under the glass inside the car. I'd suggest that you have your sunroof tinted limo black. that will be cheaper than having something else made to replace it, since your slider panel is, by the sound of it, missing. you shouldn't need to take the glass out to have it tinted, and it shouldn't cost more than $10-$20.
  24. I prefer WD40. the smell of a well oiled machine! I've developed auditory symptoms as well. I'm turning my head to look at "what kind of subaru it is" before I even realize I've heard anything. gotta watch out for whiplash. Also, I'm moving in a few weeks (3rd time this year, aargh) and I'm more concerned about garage space than anything else at this point is there a 12 step program available?
  25. new alternator clean battery terminals and cables (at starter too) GROUND WIRES GROUND WIRES GROUND WIRES!!! what's good for the EA82T digidash is good for the EA81 digidash too. check your ground wires.. replace old ones and add a few for good measure.. engine and trans both have ground wires to the body, so does the battery. add extras in a similar fashion. I added a little ground wire from the radiator to the frame, too. good for the coolant.
