The 1987+ stock bumpers are solid and a lot stronger than the 1985 / 1986. Later years (1990+? wagons only?) have shoulder belts for the rear seats that may be transplantable into earlier years too...

Hey gang.. Yes I'm still alive
I'll be applying to attend U of W as an undergrad. I'm looking to get out of Spokane and get over to Seattle pretty soon, so I can get established over there ASAP. With that in mind, I'm looking for a job, and a living situation where I'd fit as a roommate and a student next Fall.
I'd appreciate any leads from my friends network that I can prioritize over the Craigslist weirdos, so if any of you are aware of opportunities opening up in January(ish) please let me know!

Some additional info.. I like to work on my car sometimes so a little space for that is nice (shocking!) and I have 2 pet rats which are clean and not allowed free run around the house.
Thanks for any help with this. I'm looking forward to doing more Subaru-related stuff in the future too!

Greyhound or Amtrak are going to be the best options here. I shipped an entire RX body kit to the East Coast for like $60 a few years ago using one or the other.

I've been helping with this project; I'm doing the wiring harness for the EJ22 and have been providing advice as needed too, which has been a little challenging as Gen 1 cars are hard to find with projects like this done right.
Originally the project was going to use an EJ22T but someone at Spaldings "lost track of the engine" (sold it to himself probably) that was on reserve.
The fabrication for this job looks pretty great; I'll be taking some pics of it to post in a little bit. True that this EJ22 is no substitute for a turbo motor, but with this driveline, it'll be a totally different car from when it had the EA71.

It will probably not fit neatly, either. If you scroll to the bottom of the page on any thread, you can see an area for suggested links. Read through some of those or search for Digidash Swap. There's lots of wiring involved and changing of sensors. You'd be better off getting an analog dash cluster from another 1986 car.

I suggest that you look for something build to withstand dirt and getting bumped around, like a Toughbook or Thinkpad or something. It will cost you more up front but a shop environment is going to significantly shorten the lifespan of a consumer-grade laptop, especially one that costs less to begin with (you get what you pay for). It's better than having to pay for a replacement computer unexpectedly. Also invest in some backup software like Cobian so you're covered if it gets stolen or damaged. Good luck!

The push-button tranny's stock actuator uses the vacuum doodad in the corner of the engine bay by the wiper motor - it's black with green plastic parts in it and has 2 vacuum lines that should go to a 6" round vacuum actuator that moves the part that engages the 4WD lock on the transmission.
You would be best off using the push-button 4WD switch and wiring it to a solenoid that actuates the shift linkage currently attached to the 2nd shifter. You would have to find a way to calibrate the solenoid at three different settings - 2WD, 4WD-high, 4WD-low.
I would NOT suggest doing this swap as it would be harder to "feel" whether it was safe to shift the transmission out of 4WD with regards to driveline lock on pavement or other high-traction driving surface.

It won't work.. older Subies have no frames around the windows; vent visors mount to the door's frame. I'd love to have them too!
You could physically attach something perpendicular to the car around the window profile but it would probably look goony and make a lot of wind noise.

Same for me, EJ22 + digital dash. I've been running without a tach for a while as well
I double-checked that I hooked it up correctly and said "not worth the bother" as the digital dash sucks anyway. Someday I might finish the analog dash swap...

A larger auto parts store will have lots of fan switches to choose from; make sure you know the thread size and pitch that your radiator accepts.

Some people have swapped analog dashes in place of their original digital dashes, but you'd probably be the first to go the other way. The procedure would be the same, with swapping the appropriate sensors. You can make an intermediate wiring harness to adapt the dash harness to the "wrong" dash.. But I've had several digital dashes over the years and they all suck compared to the analog dashes. Their concept is cool but it's not well-executed.

A good friend of mine is moving over here from Spokane this weekend in response to a sudden job offer. He is looking for a place to crash for one, maybe two weeks. I told him I'd see what happened if I posted a request here on the USMB! He requested "no axe murderers" and I will personally vouch that he is not an axe murderer either!
My friend's name is Sam and his job is in the south Bellevue area, but he's not too picky; he just isn't sure if he'll be able to line up an apartment before he arrives this weekend.
Sam's one of my best friends and I vouch for him at the highest level regarding his character and honesty. He is happy to throw some cash into your household fund in exchange for the courtesy.
Please PM me here if you would like me to give you Sam's number to discuss this with him! He drives a Honda, but this is our chance to start converting him to our ways!
