  1. the FI block has a higher compression ratio than the carbed block.
  2. that's awesome. Nice work. I can't believe I didn't think of the [hole saw through the firewall] trick. If I ever do another swap, or redo the wiring in mine, I'll do it that way. Let's see some more pics of the beast too.
  3. I remember having to do something clever with the linkage when I swapped the RX tranny into my wagon - it had a standard 5MT D/R just as in your situation. I didn't have to cut anything but I had to swap a mounting bracket on the transmission for something. I don't recall which cars the linkages started from. The D/R selector lever sits out at a higher angle than at stock but everything else works.
  4. I think that the signal blinks 2x fast if a front light is out, and stays on solid if a rear light is out. Don't know how they train it to do so...
  5. Meghan got the car back today... with an EJ18 instead of an EJ22. She told me that she'd consented when the shop owner offered it to her as he was apparently unable to find an EJ22. Now I wish I would have called the shop after all before they did any work... also, when she called me to talk to me about OKing work on the car, I was on site watching the fire that burned the building at work (posted in Off Topic) so I don't think I really processed the conversation. She did say that it felt OK on the freeway but also that it lacked power on hills. Go figure. Anyway, from what I can tell, she was treated OK by the shop, which apparently doesn't have the best hookup on used parts.
  6. changing 18 axles in a row would be enough to make most people sell their car
  7. I was going to post this old pic last night but apparently I broke the forum after my post
  8. It makes the front of the car a lot more resilient to bumps and just generally stiffer. They usually cause a car to sit a little higher in the front. I put them in my turbowagon a while ago, on stock 4WD struts. I had new RX adjustable KYB GR2s for the rear shocks, with RX springs and the adjustment at max height. I felt that they helped significantly with making a taller car able to handle aggressively if needed.
  9. I wanted to jump in and say YES but instead, congrats on the score Those wheels would look great on anything except Caleb's car.
  10. If anybody's running a drop-in filter on an EA82T or EA81T, and if you want performance, I hope you've cut out the bottom of the airbox. Stock, the air intake breathes through a muffler and an aperture the size of a deodorant stick. Cut out, it breathes through the entire air filter and you gain a ton of power even with a stock exhaust.
  11. Have fun and bring some extra axle stubs with you
  12. Have you looked into getting it rebuilt? I have an RX transmission in my wagon and shifting is a little stubborn sometimes.
  13. They're having the car inspected at Subarus R Us tomorrow. Many thanks for the reference to them. Meghan spoke to someone at the shop and is pleased so far. She relayed to me that the shop owner suspects the timing belt and water pump. I gave her a list of a few other things to check (front seals, oil change, etc) and plan to speak with him myself after he's looked at it. Looks like they're out of the woods. Thanks again guys!
  14. Edited for a change of location. They have a place to stay so it's primarily a diagnosis/repair issue now.
  15. Epilogue - see post #16 *************************************************************************************** Looks like they're OK now. thanks! *************************************************************************************** Not me, a couple of friends of mine (and their friendly dog) on a LONG road trip are stuck a little outside of Asheville, NC. They pulled over because the car, a 1990 Legacy 5MT wagon, was overheating and losing power. They told me that there was smoke or steam coming from the front area of the engine "by the oil fill tube." They said the smoke did not smell sweet but sort of burnt. They were unable to open the radiator due to the heat but told me the overflow tank was full. Upon checking the oil, they said it looked too full... but I don't know if they just looked at it or if they wiped and rewet it first.. The radiator fans were working, and incidentally, I installed a new 2-row radiator a couple years ago. I suspect something timing belt / oil pump / water pump related. They told me that the cabin heater had blown intermittently and recently cut out but I don't think that's relevant. No other electrical problems. Any help in the area would be appreciated. I'm writing JWX in Atlanta. "Help" could be anything from a reference to a good deal on a repair, to helping with the repair, or a place to stay. Extra engine maybe? :-\ Please call Meghan or Nick at (509) 230-3619 if you can help. Neither of them are very familiar with engines or working on cars. Thanks, Andy
  16. I will be in Arvada at 330AM Friday night / Saturday morning to steal your car. Please leave the keys and title in the glovebox to facilitate my endeavor. Your compliance, while mandatory, is appreciated.
  17. You might have stuck in your fenderwell. Just a thought. *good luck with the axle. If you don't want to drop the Y-pipe, check the fluid levels and notice if the gear oil smells burnt.
