Need Honest Opinion....Reality Check
baccaruda replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I don't think that it's worth the time to fix. If you got another XT body, you could swap the fenders, doors, trunk/hood and have essentially the same paintjob. And you said you don't even trust it as a driver. Also, you have everything needed to make that coupe one hell of a car: XT6 seats, 4WD conversion with a decent 5-speed, and a 5-lug setup. You've even got a clutch suitable for an EJ22 conversion down the road. This way, if you gut the bottom of the coupe for stripping and rustproofing like I suggested above, you've got better parts to put back on it! You could even POR15 the XT6 4WD and 5speed components before putting them under the coupe. Those 20mm XT6 sway bars would make that coupe handle like it was on RAILS. My inclination is more toward bringing a car forward in time by updating and improving it - not taking it back in time with laborious repairs. I know that whatever you do, you'll do 110% - and I think that the coupe has the better payoff. It's much more of a classic than an XT6 and no matter what you do to it, it will always be simpler and less expensive to maintain than an XT6. -

Get a cheap XT4 and do a total swap. Easier than body work if you can't jack the car up, and it can take as long as it needs once you have the EA81 coupe. OR get the EA81 coupe, gut the underside, POR15 it and reassemble, and then once it's back on the road you can worry about the XT6. The XT6 is only worth a few hundred right now, so use that as a license to worry about it later (or 5-lug the coupe! do it!) -

Breaking and entering troubles...
baccaruda replied to xt6_4_life's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
sorry about your troubles.. write a letter and send copies to the newspaper, police department, and city council, as well as to as many neighbors as you like. Once enough people are as agitated about it as you are, things might start to happen. See if there's a Block Watch program or something.. good luck! -

pics of my brat if anybody likes to look.

those SVX seats look good in there. I had a wagon's behind-rear-seats cargo net-thing strung behind the seats of my Brat. I threaded keyrings onto the seatbelts for 4 corners and suspended it with parachute cord. It was almost like having a backseat in the Brat, super useful. -

EA82 5 Lug Swap - with notes and variations
baccaruda replied to idosubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have Legacy knuckles on my wagon and I'm using XT6 front E-brake calipers. I have caliper brackets from a certain type of Legacy..I don't know what it is. Some kind of turbo model or GT I think. Whatever it is, it's out there... -
My own Holy Grail "Found"

were the seats any good? that's another upgrade that's pretty popular and hard to come by. Listen to Skip and get the transmission/linkage and the flywheel & clutch too, all are pretty cool to have or to trade with. -

yeah, which tranny are you going to use? This project's been revised so many times I've lost track. I'd think that you have the best clutch options with an EJ-series transmission of some sort. Potentially lower cost with an EA-series transmission (but my wagon's isn't going anywhere right now ) but with the $ you're going to spend on transfer case hardware, drivelines, and axle guts, a little more is a small difference.

the smuggler's hatch is also an energy absorption area for rear end crashes. while you're looking in there, look out for crumpling. Hope you have plenty of receipts for your work done, they'll help keep the value of your car high versus a possible totalling when the adjuster looks at it. If your car is totalled you can always sue her because of the depreciation. Good luck to both of you

I come to the USMB because Caleb makes me snort beer all over the work computers! While I personally am winding my car hobby down (after delivering the EA81T coupe this weekend, I'll be down to only 1 car for the first time in SEVERAL years, and I'm looking forward to it!) I have a lot left to do to my wagon and you WCSSers are going to love it. I've enjoyed my car hobby a lot as I'm inclined toward introspection and improvement, visual/spatial activities, and cars in general are cool for all the reasons we know. I Googled for a reference source when I bought my second Subaru in 2003 and I assumed that there would be one best source for info - when I found the USMB I knew that I'd found what I wanted and was registering for a username within a minute. The USMB has some of the best technical information that any hobbyist could ask for, and people nice enough to deserve it! And there's Rick, too.

All stock EA82T Tuning help plz!

Also, if you can, throw on some stock-sized tires and see if it still feels wacky. The oversized tires might be "sapping" some of the torque in higher gears. -
Fabbing locking fold up droor for GL wagon
baccaruda replied to Joey Joe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
get some sort of cam lock: http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&um=1&hl=en&safe=off&q=cam+lock&btnG=Search+Images install it in the lid of the compartment; cut a slot for the lock in the rear wall of the compartment. -
take off the front bumper or at least cut out the middle section - the bumper blocks so much airflow it's ridiculous. This won't help you with the average speed but it will, along with optimizing the existing cooling system, help you keep the car in a healthy temperature range. Add a front air dam if you can, as well. It will divert air away from the underside of the car and into the radiator. (removing the A/C condensor will help a little, but if the system is charged, make sure the condenser is clean and just don't use it.. you should be OK). Brian's right about the 4.11 - I would just run the 3.7 or 3.9 transmission that the car will have.. yank the front axles and put in stubs, and put in a 4.11 rear differential. The gear ratio would save a lot of RPMs.

baccaruda replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
haha. lifted would look cool but I don't think that's in her cards.. Connie - drop the gas tank and rear crossmember and recoat the entire underside with POR15 after you fix the trunk. Use it on the rear crossmember and control arms (and add an EA82 sedan rear sway bar!) and that thing will last a long time in any part of the country.
