anyone looking for gen 2 brat t-tops????
baccaruda replied to rory's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
send a PM to monstaru, he might be interested in some extras... -
cheap and easy cruise control = lawn mower throttle cable. don't kill yourself!

can you sleep in the back of brat?
baccaruda replied to Jack in Norfolk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
my brat has the seats, and i don't consider it a sleepable vehicle. my wagon has 5'4" of room between the rear gate and the edge of the seats when flat, and I'm 5'5".. close enough for me! -
free 82 GL come and get it!

does that car have any rust on it? -
ea82 gl10 seat gadgetry?
baccaruda replied to Jack in Norfolk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
if you push the telescoping arm in, instead of pull it out, it ejects the passenger's front seat! (sunroof models only) -
So close I can taste it!

right! and you're seeing grease on the valve covers and cam cases, but not on the heads. -
XT6 spindles, legacy struts, wrong bolts?!
baccaruda replied to baccaruda's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Oh, I have XT6 control arms on the car. I drilled out the crossmember to receive the larger bolts. The ball joints are the same for XT6 or for 1990 Legacy (the donor). I'm going to slip the struts over the XT6 knuckles and see how things line up, and if they line up well, then I'm going to get a quote for having the holes in the XT6 knuckles milled out. I expect that to be $40 or (probably) less, but I may just put the Legacy knuckles on the front and go e-brake-less for now. -

pics are great. nice avatar BTW. sometimes I miss driving an EA82 turbo. when i had one in my wagon, with the negated intake snorkus and the 2.5" open exhaust, it was one noisy p----d off sounding car. After I got tired of 12mpg (bad engine << dneufeld) i bought my brat and at one point loaned the wagon to my friend Rhonda, when her Honda was in the shop (don't bother, she's heard all the jokes before). I was walking around downtown and heard some buzzbomb coming from a few blocks away, and being a proper gearhead, kept my eyes peeled at the sound.. let's just say that regardless of how satisfied i was with how my car sounded while i was in it, I never thought it was that loud from 4 blocks away! I watched her coast by and wondered if my neighbors hate me. I still have the rearpiece from that exhaust and can't wait to sound what it likes while venting an EJ22 :headbang: :headbang: -
XT6 spindles, legacy struts, wrong bolts?!
baccaruda replied to baccaruda's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
I had been planning to keep the E-brake in front, because I don't care whether it's in the front or back, and I need to get the car driveable again before I do any more reengineering of it. Although it seems that's a neverending process I really don't want to drive it without an E-brake, but at this rate I might just do that and put the Legacy spindles back on and get some Legacy calipers from the parts yard. When in doubt, procrastinate. -
OK, the front end of my wagon HAD: XT6 calipers legacy spindles Legacy spindle-to-strut bolts legacy struts (new GR2s). The XT6 calipers don't fit on the legacy spindles, so I switched and now have: XT6 calipers XT6 spindles Legacy spindle-to-strut bolts Legacy struts (new GR2s) The legacy spindle-to-strut bolts are too large for the strut mount holes in the top of the XT6 spindle. Should I: *have the holes in the top of the spindle enlarged? *use smaller XT6 bolts and use external toothed lockwashers to keep the struts from dislocating (as they're made to accept larger bolts)? *get different struts (NOT eager to explore this option as I believe others have used legacy struts on XT6 spindles so why can't I?) ARGH. thanks.

EA81 DL >>> GL dash swap?

EA81 DL >>> GL dash swap?
baccaruda replied to baccaruda's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
that's good to know, thanks guys. I have a heater core / hot water valve replacement in store for my Brat, so I may as well see about doing the whole shebang at once... -
OK. So my DL brat has the weenie dash with no tach and no clock. Brian/monstaru has a good GL dash with the above accoutrements. Plus intermittent wipers. Let's pretend I get ambitious and decide to upgrade. How much of a headache am I looking at? A search for Dash Swap revealed only EA82 and analog related stuff. I assume I'd have to add a tachometer sending unit doodad to my car.. anyone have insight or advice?

thepartsbing.com service stinks
baccaruda replied to Dylan86GL10's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
get ahold of them, reexplain the problem, tell them that return shipping needs to be their responsibility, and if they disagree, tell them that you'll dispute the charge on your credit/debit card. (first, call your bank/CC company and discuss it with them) -
WOW. what's the mileage on it? uh, kilometerage?

done. someone delete this thread before it turns into inbox tennis!

http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/search.php edit. i don't mean to be rude by throwing the search link at you, but there are 5 other "how do i start" type posts on this first page of retrofitting, and there is lots available to be found. good luck

Timing Belt Covers - Yay or Nay?
baccaruda replied to mrroot's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
the covers might be there to keep the belts clean from outside contaminants... or the covers might be there to protect the fingers of hapless subaru owners. I've also seen exposed timing belt covers in other cars and it does beg the question, "why not on a subaru?" ... our cars do keep the engines lower in the bay due to the H configuration, but there are also splash guards under most of the bottom of the engine bay. Maybe the belts could break more often due to projectiles or outside crap, but the USMB crowd is a little more inclined to shrug off such things. Like you said, 20 minutes vs. 2 hours.. -
nope! it's all the same to your engine. Make sure you flush out the whole system soon though cause that crap will settle somewhere else.
