  1. Hey, does your flywheel service include a rebalance? (I already have had mine redrilled. FYI, I paid $50 for that and will pay $30 for a rebalance this week so your price is within reason for the service IMO!) just curious. Andy
  2. (I have a pair of XT6 control arms for sale for $20 here)
  3. I'm going to install a push-button ignition AND reverse the wiring on the ignition switch, so that you have to turn it CCW to start instead of CW. If someone turns the key the traditional way, the glovebox will eject a live rattlesnake into the passenger's seat. I will also scotchgard the driver's seat cushion to faciliate easy wipe-ups.
  4. I say, use the wagon (a vehicle you can sleep in!) What's wrong with the motors? If you could get a good running EA81 into the brat, it would be a good backup vehicle/parts runner. Lots of stuff to sell to help fund your project by the looks of it.....
  5. it makes it easy to use a torque wrench to tension the belt. For that matter, it makes it easier to use ANY kind of wrench to tension the belt, as opposed to tweaking them with screwdrivers or punches in the holes. Many people who have done enough TB jobs do it by feel and I think there's nothing wrong with that. I've done exactly two EA82 TBs and one EJ22 TB (MUCH easier IMO!) and prefer to use a torque wrench.
  6. I usually cram the end of a prybar through the top hole and into the flywheel. Once I used my axle pin punch to lock the flywheel but I bent it (craftsman, free replacement ) and would not recommend that method as it would be inconvenient if it broke off.
  7. nice. i'm making a cam pulley tool for an EJ22 in much the same way. $60 for a "factory" tool is for suckers IMO.
  8. hm. nope! i see what you mean though. the crank on the TDI is all the way at the bottom. That might mean raising the motor mounts a few inches and lowering the subie trans a few inches more. rrgh. guess my wagon wouldn't look too bad with a power bulge in the hood. the vanagon guys run their TDIs at a 50deg tilt, even have a custom oilpan for such. nice touch. I sure hope I get a lot when I sell my brat!
  9. patience, grasshopper! I intend to mate the TDI to my sorta-stock EA82 transmisson (sorta stock cause it's from an RX but the bellhousing pattern is the same) Gotta get the EJ swap done so I can sell the brat so I can buy the TDI swap.
  10. not if you have a lifted EA82 wagon. I have taken preliminary measurements and believe that a newer 1.9 TDI will fit with the hood closed.
  11. i'm TRYIN ta eat, here! ya mind?! (why is it that rats are always imagined to have NY/jersey accents?)
  12. probably $50 max. The only true answer is "whatever someone would pay for it" which isn't helpful, but they're kind of a medium to low-demand item, not like LSDs or rear disc setups. I sold a turbo spider setup a while ago. I think it was to Suberdave? I think I was asking more than $50 but it took a while to sell it. Including the injectors might help but of course someone buying this is putting it on another MPFI which already has injectors....
  13. I'm kind of shocked that a parts counter guy would have known to ask that question!
  14. keep it, swap in a diesel, and run it on vegetable oil.
  15. such shoddy technique is bound to catch up with you eventually. Next time I hope you'll be properly prepared.
  16. Interesting. Well, I have a 5-lug swap on my wagon, and I am not happy with the alignment of one of the control arm bushings (relative to the holes after I enlarged them), so I will be grabbing another crossmember from the JY by this weekend. I will slide it under Brian's extra EJ22 and see how they fit together, at eye level even!
  17. interesting. I had read first that it is necessary with an EA81 vehicle, and then I read that the same is necessary for an EA82 vehicle. But you guys are working with EJ20s, not EJ22s. There might be a difference between the two motors.
  18. the cheap mods are the best IMO. post pics of your FJ40.
  19. it's hibernating in an undisclosed location ATM but is rumored to be stirring soon, perhaps in time for WCSS
  20. I think I've gotten that from Napa. Just get an elbow in the right diameter and trim it to fit.
