  4. time to bump this.. i goofed on my conversion and got XT6 front calipers to retain the front e-brake, but i overlooked their incompatibility with the Legacy knuckles I am using. I can't drive the car with only one caliper bolt in! Switching to Legacy front calipers is of course no problem, but that puts me in rear E-brake territory. (unless my freshly rebooted Legacy axles would fit in XT6 spindles?) What's the state of the art in rear E-brake conversions now?

  9. well, there's a red EA81 wagon, same shade of red, I think, at Pull N Save. I think the hatch was OK. Maybe take the car to a muffler shop and see if they'll weld that?
  10. nice pictures! If you plan on changing a timing belt in Montana again, make sure you have an extra tensioner on you, pre-compressed. That way you don't have to worry about finding a bench vise if you have a roadside timing belt repair..

  13. there you go. I've seen two tonneau covers, and they installed with snaps that had been screwed to the brat bed trim. I don't know if there would be a way to secure them without screwing snaps to something; maybe the brat body would be better? you would have better watersealing by stretching the cover further over the bed opening, and the funny part is that it would be easier to "erase" the snaps from the body of the car than it would be to replace the chrome bed trim if you ever wanted to present the car as restored or original or whatever. Now, while I can say that Gore-Tex is wrong for such an application, the thought of having a tonneau slashed open by a thief has me interested in some sort of kevlar weave product. But I don't know anything about Kevlar...
  14. time to start changing your own axles! the specialty tools are cheap and there is an excellent writeup by edrach somewhere around here. do a search for it. Specialty tools: 3/16 or 3mm(?) punch (Craftsman's is $6-8ish) 36mm socket for axle nut ($10, schucks, etc) snap ring pliers $10ish CV boot clamp pliers (optional but nice) about $10 each, 2 styles, nice to have each. grease and cotter pins are good to keep on hand. boots and clamps should come in under $20 per joint. Buy these tools, then just watch for the rubber on the boots to start wearing out, then change the boots. If you don't let them rupture, you don't even need to clean the grease out every time. Plus you can regrease your wheel bearings every time you remove an axle.
  15. I still wouldn't use Gore-Tex. The advantage Gore-Tex has with clothing is its breathability, and your car has no sweat glands. I don't think it would hold up well in the long run. I don't know what your experience is with it, and i don't wish to come across as condescending, but I worked in a premium-level gear shop for a few years and know that it is pretty easy to damage just wearing it on a human body. I don't think it would hold up well with cargo perhaps poking it from underneath, and I think it would be destroyed by wind if you ever drive more than 30mph. Plus it's heavily vulnerable to heat or flame because it's a petroleum product. I don't know how it would hold up to UV rays in the long term so I can't say anything about that either way. Despite my tone, good luck with the project! Maybe you could even sell a few on the board after you come up with a design.

Gore-Tex would cost you a ton, and they probably wouldn't sell to you, as they're very picky about what sorts of designs they will allow their product to be associated with (to keep inferior designs of garments off the market, and to keep priceshigh). Plus it isn't all that strong, at least not enough for automotive use. Your best bet is to use vinyl, most likely, although I've thought that kevlar would be nice to inorporate if you were installing a tonneau or a soft/convertible top or a canvas sunroof. Probably also too expensive. I think that monstaru has a vinyl brat tonneau available.. PM him?

  18. the brat was probably monstaru's. it's red and has black steel pugs and a 4" lift.
  19. I just had a set made for my wagon, which has a 4" lift. I brought in original rubber lines and said "4 inches longer here and here." The fronts don't have the fittings that bolt through the strut bracket (a rubber grommet and a zip tie will subsitute nicely) and the back omits the hard line and the 2 sets of fittings associated with that (pass the grommets & zip ties, please!). These omissions were done to save money, as the fittings were the most expensive part. The set cost me $105. They aren't installed yet as I have to do some other stuff with the calipers first.
  20. Will Impreza motor mounts fit in place of Legacy motor mounts on a '90 EJ22? (car is an '86 GL10 FYI) I don't feel I can afford new mounts and would like to know what my options are regarding used mounts or ebay mounts. thanks...
