  1. Copied from my post at XT6.net today. Hey guys, Just got back from dynoing the AWD XT6. The transmission is on it's way to the tranny gods. It's very weak. I can't describe some of the noises/shakes/shifts that come from that thing. So, I couldn't dyno in AWD. Ever since learning the tranny was weak, I've been dynoing this car in FWD mode (put 10 amp fuse in place in the engine bay). So all dyno runs that have been performed previously and up to now is in FWD mode. All dynos are from the bottom of first gear and stopped when it shifts out of 3rd. I only show 3rd gear hp/torque results to prevent confusion. I do like knowing what's going on power wise in all gears though. The dyno plot you'll be looking at is a comparison of 3 different dyno sessions. The blue line stock dyno run. The green line is when I had a 2.25" cat back exhaust put on with a 2.25" Dynomax Ultra Flow SS muffler. The red line is the 2.25" catback with the addition of a JC Sports intake and a ProECM pulley added. Guys/gals, I simply could not have asked for more, especially since this car is naturally aspirated. Max hp I now have is 123hp vs 113hp with the Dynomax muffler vs 112hp stock. This doesn't tell the whole tale of the tape. As power drops off with the stock setup, there is a fat gain with the intake/exhaust/pulley combo. I picked 5600rpm in the graph to demonstrate the difference in hp. Notice where at 5600rpm I have 120hp while stock I only had 100hp. That's great! Let's take a look at the torque graph. [/code] I'm not going to speak about the max torque since the result is a bit skewed. When the car shifts from 2nd gear to 3rd gear, it's right at torque peak and a part of the shift shows up on the beginning of the graph. However, I picked the same point in this graph (5600rpm) as the hp graph to show the gains made. While stock the XT6 only made 93lb-ft of torque at 5600rpm, the intake/exhaust/pulley combo shows 112lb-ft of torque. That's a gain of 19lb-ft of torque. Nice! And it seems that it pretty much tries to keep this gain throughout the powerband. So there you have it. If you plan on modifying your XT6, a 3" intake tube, a ProECM pulley (2lbs lighter than stock) and a 2.25" exhaust can really work for you as a combo together. Stock hp and torque figures are 145hp/156lb-ft or torque. So theoretically, you can say I'm making approximately 165hp/175lb-ft of torque. Hoooooo! One of the friggi' brand new Kumho tires got a flat sometime when it snowed lightly here in the middle of last week. The hole was patchable but I rode on the flat a little too long and screwed up the inside of the tire to the point metal wire was showing. I ordered a new tire Thursday for 1 day shipment last week. Unfortunately the holidays (New Years) held back my shipment and it still haven't gone out even today. :banghead: :banghead: *As u can see, I'm angry* If the sun and moon hits some perfect mathematical junction, maybe I'll get it tomorrow so I can test things out Wednesday. The next dyno test is to test your pulley (The Garner Pulley) vs my stock runs. Then I'll re-install my intercooler and do some more runs. This way, people can get some type of idea what they can expect with a 2lb lighter pulley and especially an intercooler upgrade. I'm even looking forward to that. Stupid stuff happens though.   3. It's just a comparison to previous runs vs the current ones. The graph you see is the JC Sports intake with the exhaust work already done. Believe it or not, the hp drop was just as dramatic before when I had a ProECM powerchip installed with a 2.25" exhaust (1st cat back) vs the 2.5" exhaust I have now. I just made the graph up below so you can compare up so you can tell. I just picked a random point on the graph so you can see the difference between the ProECM powerchip/2.25" exhaust/JC Sports intake run vs 2.5" exhaust/No chip/JC Sports intake vs 2.5" exhaust/Cobb CAI intake *today*. 112hp - 106hp - 98hp at the point I chose is the difference. Be careful what you do. This car is for testing things anyways. The AWD model is the one things will be done 'right'.
  4. Well, I don't have to ask where is my kit. It came in today. The parts are the Techworks header/uppipe combo, downpipe and a GT17 ball bearing turbo from a Saab. What you see in the picture is EVERYTHING that I received within the 'kit'. The box wasn't all that pretty I must say. It came with that 'newsy-customs-ups-I-wanna-see-what's-in-the-box hole on the side of it. There were 3 boxes inside of the big box (two white ones with a reddish colored one) and they didn't have anything inside of them. I'm hoping that they did not have anything inside of them. Even the yellow package I received had nothing inside of it. The turbo came in the box labelled 'GT17' but all the others were empty. It's important we share this info in case some of us do receive certain items so we can call Techworks due to missing/stolen items from our boxes. This is what I have though. I should be able to get away with what I got since they are the staple of the kit. All the bolts needed to connect the uppipe-turbo-downpipe were there. There was once section where I needed a support gasket/bracket to be able to hold the intake onto the turbo. It's an extra piece that connects to the turbo with a gasket on it but a clamp is needed to hold them both together. This clamp wasn't in the box. I'll re-double check again and if I find it, I'll post up. Otherwise, I'll purchase one from somewhere. As an aside, here are a pic of 3 turbos. The one on the top is a Toyota GT26 turbo I originally was going to use to turbo one of the XT6s. The one to the far right is a Garret T3/T04E turbo I was 'thinking' about using on the RX turbo. As you can tell, I know nothing about turbo sizing despite reading Maximum Boost. The turbo on the bottom is the Garret GT17 turbo from the Saab I'll be using as an upgrade to the stock RX turbo. This turbo looks smaller compared to the others. Makes me wonder just how small our stock turbos are. I think Skip or someone did post a pic of this somewhere though. *Special Note* Guys, my wife went out today to get the mail. I got a cute letter from UPS concerning the Techworks package. It's a $40.78 customs payment from UPS. This sucks! I didn't expect it and may have forgotten to expect it. No matter! I don't want or like any bad credit so I'm going to take care of it ASAP. I don't know how this works out with the group buy or whether Folgers bites the custom bullet but for you peeps who order directly from Techworks, you have been forewarned. L8Rs
  5. Hey guys, Did 5 runs earlier today testing out how the Cobb intake faired against some of the old dyno tests of the JC Sports intake. I have to say, things did not go so well. :? I dunno if it's just a fact of my car slowly dying, the intake just not doing as well or the header I had custom made taking it's toll big time. I do know after that header was installed, I lost a ton of low end torque but I kept it. Even still, the JC Sports intake was tested with the header as well. The two intakes were tested on the same car which is a 1989 2.7ltr XT6 (FWD/Autotranny). The JC Sports intake is no longer on the FWD XT6. It was put on my AWD XT6. Here are some quick pics of the intakes before posting the results. This is the JC Sports intake---> Here's a picture of the Cobb (PRM filter) air intake I have now on the FWD XT6--> I did a total of 5 dyno runs today. My goal today was to aim for a 13.0:1 air/fuel ratio. All over the internet, I'm always reading that this is the optimum air/fuel ratio for naturally aspirated cars when it comes to making the most hp. My first run I had a 13.5:1 air fuel ratio. I adjusted the fuel pressure via a AEM fuel pressure regulator (fpr). The second run I had a 12.9-13.0:1 air/fuel ratio. Perfect! However, it appeared I had lost just a tad of hp/torque according to the computer at the dyno shop. :?: The 3rd run I dialed back the fuel pressure regulator shooting for a 13.25:1 air/fuel ratio across the board. It seemed to have gained a tiny bit of hp/torque. So I then adjusted the car for a 13.5:1 (which is what I came in with) and let the car cool off. After this, I ran the car two more times and I had to leave to pick the wifey up. *She had to take off work today and go shopping didn't she? :roll: * I'm using run #4 for comparison to one of my JC Sports intake runs. Run #4 was after letting the car cool off. All runs with my automatics are done from the bottom of 1st gear to the top of 3rd gear. I only show 3rd gear to avoid confusion by some not familar with dynos. In the end, I have LESS hp and torque than I did previously. *sigh* During high rpms, the dyno graph appears to be wiggly at some points. I have seen this trend before when I had my cams installed. I had to richen the air/fuel ratio all the way to 12.0:1 air/fuel ratio and add timing to make the wiggly lines smoother. Perhaps I'll adjust fuel to 12.0-12.5:1 tomorrow. That's turbo fuel richness though. I'm using 93 octane gas. This graph is of a horsepower comparison between my XT6 with the JC Sports intake vs the Cobb CAI intake. The JC Sports intake peaked at 112hp while the Cobb CAI was only able to muster 108hp. This graph is of the torque comparison between my XT6 with the JC Sports intake vs the Cobb CAI intake. The JC Sports intake peaked at 125lb-ft of torque while the Cobb Cai was only able to make 115lb-ft. *Note* this isn't a true JC Sport or Cobb intake for the XT6 because there aren't any. I just scrapped some extra parts together to make them work. I'm trying to figure out if I want to go back tomorrow to see what happens if I adjust the air/fuel ratio to in the 12.0:1 or 12.5:1 areas. I'm thinking about it. In the meantime, this is all I have for now.

  8. It's a really simple device. I had it before so I'm familiar with it. Mine did not come with instructions. There is one button on it that you switch it to turn the unit on. Once on, you pick either Accel or G-Force (or whatever the unit that measures G's in a turning circle) by pushing the button in when 'Accel' flashes. The unit has a negative and positive number showing. You zero it out while it's attached to your front windshield via a suction. You simply lift it up or push the unit downward to level it out. Once levelled, you push the button in an a 'Go' will light up. You floor your car and a 0-60 second time will flash up. Hope someone is with you because that's the only time you'll see it. Once you get to a 1/4 mile mark, it'll continue flashing your 1/4 mile time and trap speed until you reset it and start over again. Simple! Only had a chance to do two runs today, one in each direction. I should've waited to late night to do it but I had a little free time so. I simply mashed the gas pedal after the G-Tech said go. I did this on a highway, once in both directions. Here are my runs and the average. Average: 16.79 @ 87.5mph 16.99 @ 85mph Average: 16.89 @ 86.25mph At least I have a baseline of sorts even though I don't plan doing much else with this car. This is what we all say though right? Car: 1989 2.7ltr Subaru XT6 (FWD/Autotranny) Mods: Custom Cobb intake, modified header, 2.5" cat, 2.5" exhaust, Unorthodox Racing crank pulley, Delta Cams, Advanced timing (25-26 degrees), Grounding wires, modified valve body, Protorque torque converter I won't be doing any hard torque converter launches until I get the car dyno'd and tuned for a 13.0:1 (or 13.25:1) air/fuel ratio (which I'm believing should be the best). This way, us auto folks will know just how affective a modified torque converter can be. I have a dyno appointment tomorrow at 10:30a.m for this XT6. Wish me luck! :wink: BTW: My header which, which has bigger diameter tubing and my 2.5" exhaust is KILLING my times. This'll be fixed in the future.
  9. Thanks for the info! I know this is asking a lot but I need to know. When (not if) I go to Home Depot, what am I to ask the people helping me what I'm looking for? Do I simply say, "Excuse me but do you know where I can find a bleed time with a ball and spring control, that works off a spring tension?" Would they know what I'm talking about? A lot of people here are backyard mechanics and electrical whizzes. You have to talk to me like a 6 year old with details. I'm interested and if I get the parts right, I'll post part#s and pics to the other '6yr olds' can make exactly the same thing as you did. Thanks! And again, nice ride. And I agree with you about the suspension. I love the way it rides. Feels just right to me. I'd like wider tires on it but other than that, it's cool with me.
  10. OMG! My *&%$ eyes hurt! Cool intercooler setup. What do you have elevated around that intercooler to help direct air flow? I can't make out what it is. I don't see many Starion intercoolers used. Any more info on your homemade boost controller? Send me a PM with your IM (AOL, Yahoo, etc) so I can send you these pics smaller.

  12. Skip makes a good point. I don't know what type of testing facilities you have but don't just take people's word for what they say if you have a way to test it for yourself. It can be via dyno, drag strip, G-Tech, stop watch, etc. This is what I did on on of my XT6s and I posted the results at the XT6.net site. I tested the stock setup, stock setup with snorkus cut and ducting attached going out to foglight, and an open air K&N air filter attached in the engine bay with pre-made piping. The cold air of the stock snorkus cut and routed through the foglight made a significant difference in my trap speed. It brought it up from the stock 78-79mph range to 81mph range at the dragstrip. However, despite the open-air K&N air filter I had sucking in hot engine bay air (especially when the cooling fan came on), my trap speed with this setup was in the high 82/low 83mph range. It seemed my right-off-the-throttle torque was affected some due to the hot air sucking in at idle but once it started moving, the hot engine bay air played less of a part in hp/torque reduction. Good to test out though to see for yourself and let us know what you come up with.
  13. Start with what is available now. Call Techworks up to see if you can get an upgraded header/uppipe and downpipe. They may or may no have a turbo available. You could get your own as well.
  14. Isn't this info good to be in that 'Parts Exchange' thread or something like that? I always love to read about interchangable parts between different manufacturers, especially domestic ones. You can come out much cheaper for a replacement part.

Here's that first attempt! *That worked BTW* Edit: Dr. Krazy, I just took a picture of the intercooler(?) I had in a box. I wasn't even aware it was an intercooler (The idiot I am). It looks similar to yours. If they are the same, cool. Maybe it'll be something I can utilize in the future. See, your site is working for me/us already.

  19. Ok, I'll continue here. I couldn't upload my pics anywhere for some reason and sites with pictures was REALLY slow. *Continued*....... Ok, here's a picture of the ghetto air filter that's on my RX Turbo and a K&N air filter that I have installed now on my Outback Sport. The K&N air filter is on the left while the ghetto-no-name air filter is on the right. Looking at them doesn't seem to show any defects or what not. The Ghetto air filter 'looks' fine and seems like it should flow fine. Here's a close up look at the K&N air filter that I really like and why I purchased it. Notice how the center of the air filter seems to allow air to flow through it as well as letting air come in from the sides. There's not just a 'cap' on the top of the air filter. It also curves inward toward the air flow sensor. This is the opening in which the air flow sensor (or maf adapter) would be attached too. This inward center design may aide in controlling turbulent airflow somewhat rather than just letting air come in the sides of the filter and flow uncontrollably through the maf (if the screen on the maf sensor housing doesn't help control turbulent airflow). This is the ghetto Autozone air filter. Look at how it's constructed inside as if it was thrown together. Also noticed that the top part of the filter is 'capped' off. There is no airflow allowed through this part. So the K&N air filter has more surface area for air to flow through than this filter. *Note* Some K&N air filters are made just like this also (meaning with the center 'cap' portion). Here is a top view of both of the air filters. The K&N air filter is on the left while the Autozone ricer filteris on the right. Again, notice how the extra air filtering on the top of the K&N allows for more air flow through the filter and how it's construction may aide in guiding in turbulent airflow. The Autozone filter only allows airflow through the side, nothing from the top. I just felt I'd share some info with some folks that may be interested. This is something for any newbies (like me) to ponder over when considering purchasing an air filter for their ride. Remember, that Autozone air filter would not let water pass through it (or not enough of it) until I really cleaned it. And the water flow through it was still not comparable to any of my K&N air filters I cleaned. I do have one K&N air filter that's on my Toyota Matrix (An AEM intake) that's designed exactly like that Autozone air filter. I'm not saying that the Autozone air filter is crappy by design because of the less surface area of filter for air to flow through. I'm just stating why I think the K&N air filter that's open from the top is superior. Also, I'm pointing out that those aftermarket air filters like the Autozone one may not flow well or even worse than stock. Be careful how you choose. I have no proof of any of this. So those two air filters I have shown, I'll be taking up to the dyno and swapping them between runs to see if there is any difference in hp/torque and/or air/fuel ratio mixture. It would be interesting and maybe even funny if the top end is restored simply from an air filter swap. I doubt it though. I doubt everything...so I test. That's all for now!
  20. Hey All, I was talking to Will (WJM) earlier about his and my air filter on our EA82Ts. Nothing deep but he was talking about a post in which someone mentioned turbulence may be affecting the way his car is performing. I figured I bring up something that I thought was interesting (at least to me it was). Yesterday, since it was great weather outside, I decided I would clean all the K&N air filters on my cars. In cleaning the K&N air filters, it's recommended that you run water from the filter outlet towards the outside of the filter. If you just rinse water directly through the filter, you can lodge dirt/grime into the filter itself so rinsing outward prevents this. As I went through the K&N filters, I had only one ricer/no-name brand air filter that I figured I'd clean. It was the filter I purchased for the RX turbo. It was needed since the previous filter looked like it said in water for months, rusty as hell. Anyways, the K&N air filters rinsed through fine. However, the ghetto-ricer filter actually filled up with water. I was like The filter element didn't look restrictive and you could see a fair amount or light through the air filter itself. This filter actually looked cleaner than all of my K&N air filters. If this air filter holds water in like that, it has to be more restrictive than the K&N air filters. Some others here may think it's actually doing a better job since it is in fact more restrictive. Performance wise though, I can see where it may cause problems. I'm going to show you why I am talking about this particular filter. You see, this air filter was previously on my Impreza Outback Sport. I had installed a used Minnam air intake on the Outback Sport and needed an air filter quickly to install so I put this unit on. I had the Outback Sport dyno'd not to long after installing this air filter. What I noticed is that it fell flat on its face at high rpms but did good on the low end. http://xt6.net/forum/files/mini-minnamvsstock.jpg I have been wondering recently if this is what attributed to my recent dyno run with this air filter installed. *Need to reboot computer to finish post, problems with pics*
