  1. Did you do the work yourself? If you didn't i would definitely check the timing, and the distributor for correct advancement. Even if you did, its really easy to make a mistake with the timing... it can be a real pain. Also make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks. So that black wire, you did ground it? I cant say what it is without a picture, but you could check your manual's wiring diagram and try to figure it out that way. Sounds like grounding it is the thing to do though. I would defiantly make sure your timing/advance is correct first, but then i guess its just about going through your essentials, Air, Fuel, Spark.
  2. Well, having an intake leak is no good... if you are getting too much air into the system it can cause it to run hot. But to what extent i do not know. Any air that was introduced into the coolant system should be pumped out if your topping off the fluids. On the original carb there was a port for the hot radiator fluid from a hole in the intake to heat the carb so it would preform better in cold conditions. The weber does not have the same port. so you just end up blocking it with your gasket, and stopping the flow from getting to the hole in the intake. Getting back to the main point... if that hole was not plugged, and all that stands in the way of the coolant from getting into the intake is the gasket from the weber, and that gasket was not properly tightened.... you could be sucking in fluid right through that hole. If i were you i would do a more permanent fix of that gasket, and make sure you do not have any other form of intake leak.
  3. Thanks for the feed back... now to just find an 87 near me... I also checked the wiring from the ECU to the FI and its going through just fine. Just not getting the message to fire when plugged in.

  5. I was super busy with school... just recently started working on it again... its kinda my donor car since i decided to stick with the weber instead of bothering to convert the FI... Currently im trying to fix the FI in the 87 that its in. ( my main car is an 85 wagon weberized ) As you might have seen in my other post i cant get it started, the FI just isn't getting volts. But getting back to the subject at hand. I decided to keep both as they were... for simplicities sake.

  7. So does anyone know what years they used the same ECU? i went to a wrecking yard and the model numbers were different than my 87... Help!
  8. I want to say i get about 20-22 mpg, maybe alittle more just on the highway. I do allot of mixed driving so its hard to say just city driving.
  9. Well, im pretty sure the resistor is for newer models. So thats out... I'm going to try the ECU next. I tested all the wires and sensors that i can think of that are connected with the FI system and they all seem fine. The only thing that was bad is that the FI was not getting volts from the ECU when i tried to turn it over. Unless there is some other system that can stop the ECU from sending to the Injector, like a fail safe. I'm assuming its the ECU.

I recently had the same issue with the rotor and cap on my 87 subi... my guess is that they were miss matched or something along those lines... probably auto zone's fault... it never ceases to amaze me how 75% of the time i go there they screw up the years for my parts. I went to Baxters and bought the RIGHT ones and no terrible rubbing.
  11. well from personal experience you can run heads with them cracked. Ive heard that quite a few heads are cracked to some degree. It all depends on the seriousness of the crack. IF it is cracked, tightening it would do no good. Because the cracks are not around the gasket seal. They form next to the valves. From what ive seen there is no way of fixing heads with cracks. you either have to replace them or live with them.
  12. Could be a cracked head, ive had issues with those... the hot gases from the combustion chamber leak into the water jacket making it run hot. Or maybe blocked radiator section / bad fan. But since your burning fluids i have a feeling its cylinder head related.
  13. I was looking through the troubleshooting section and it mentioned a resistor that doesn't appear to be in mine... If i can track one down thats my next best guess.
  14. I think the SPFI PSI is lower... I'll double check my manual. I seem to remember it being right on when i was checking it.
  15. Yeah... i put a weber on my 85, runs great. But i bought the 87 for its 5 speed and some of its electrical parts for 350$ off craigslist... couldn't pass it up. Mainly trying to get everything running to make sure it all works before donating it to my 85.
  16. Swapped the FI with a pick and pull, also the Throttle Position Sensor, started when i first installed, but after about 5 seconds it shut off. Now its not spraying fuel anymore. ECU is still sending the code that says the FI is bad. Or atleast that its not injecting fuel, for whatever reason. So i think im down to bad ECU, or bad electrical someplace in the system...
  17. Yes, fuel filter is good. tested the psi on either end of the filter 20 psi all the way. The fuel stops at the injector, for some reason it is not firing or it is plugged up. And yes i checked the codes, it says the fuel injector is not firing. ( its exact words are a little different... but thats the jist of it. ) Its SPFI, non turbo. There is a kind of fuse box over there, but i cant think of anything else, maybe thats what your talking about jono? Does that provide electrical to the FI system?
  18. So i recently bought an 87 subi wagon, it had intermittent spaz sessions where it would lurch from low rpm to high. it happened under load most. I think tracked it down to the FI system, most likely electrical... i thought i fixed it with a new rotor and cap as it ran well for about a mile... when it completely stopped getting fuel. My fuel pump is fine. but I tested the FI itself and it its impedance is out of spec. I'm not sure if that can cause it to fail to inject fuel or not, but currently my next move is to get a pick and pull fuel injector that passes the ohms spec from the book. ive got all the pieces of the puzzle except fuel to get her started again. Any of you guys think that the spaz sessions, and the not starting is the same issue? Is there anything i haven't thought of that could be causing this issue? If so which systems would be good to check? Thanks in advance.
  19. Really, for some reason i thought it would be more drastic. So it wouldn't really be worth swapping one over from a 87 to my 85.
  20. So i have a 85 station wagon, its currently got a weber on it. running great. But i recently bought a 87 FI manual trans wagon for 350$... It even runs! besides some serious fuel flow issues i drove it home 15 miles. My question is if i get the FI system working well, which would be better for mpg, FI or a weber? i plan on transplanting the 5 speed trans in either way.
  21. Many thanks to you all for the info... I feel very foolish for completely overlooking the 3 timing marks for the cams... It's even in the book! After some issues with my brakes i finally got my subi on the road! She is running great! After i replace my tires and get them aligned everything will be perfect!
  22. So the manual is wrong about TDC? because it says to put it to 0... if this is my problem im gonna flip... haha. My firing order is correct, but i didn't time it to the 3 marks... I'll try that. update when its done.
  23. Yeah, i have my vacuum advance hooked to the carb. I'm like 100% sure the cam timing is correct. I even checked by taking the spark plugs out and sticking my finger in the hole to fell the compression as the piston came to TDC. ( meaning that all my ports where closed and timed correctly to the TDC marks on the flywheel) And yes, i have spark. All plugs. Honestly, its really frustrating because ive checked everything. Ive been bouncing ideas off every mechanic i know to try to diagnose this thing. Ive even got my mechanical wizard of an uncle to help me. We have double checked everything.
  24. So, ive spent the last 2 weeks either waiting for parts or having to return parts because my local auto parts store always orders the wrong thing. Only to run into problems with the finished project... Here is the run down. Its an EA82 1985 subaru gl station wagon. Recent headgasket failure ( cracked heads ) non existent choke, and possibly a bad starter, and bad breaks. So i recently bought re manufactured heads, and a weber carb, and some shiny new brakes. My subi will be perfect after this! IF i can get it running. Here is what I'm 99% sure of. The cams are timed, the distributor is timed, ( enough to start ) and in correct rotation for TDC ( I have rotated it 180 degrees as i made that mistake and troubleshooted that issue. ) I have gas ( 2.5 psi worth from the fuel line ) I'm 90% sure i have no vacuum leak from the intake. as there is good vacuum there. I have excellent compression on all my heads. ( 120-140 ) So i think i have narrowed it down to spark. Which i have, on all wires but... The only thing i have to suspect is my ignition coil reads a little under spec, and my ignition control module reads as having interference. ( which it shouldn't ) But as i have spark im not sure if that matters. The other fishy thing is that my carb seems to spray alittle gas up through the choke butterfly as it turns over. It is so close to starting its not funny. But it just wont get there. Its just not catching/starting. Please help! I'm at wits end and i need this thing running before the end of the week.
