To put on extractors or not
ausubaru92 replied to su87bi's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I made and tried some equal length extractors, they really only changed the note of the exhaust. After some research, i found that to make each extractor pipe the volume of the cylinder that will fill it. With the ea series motors, with each pipe being supplied by 2 cylinders, i made eack pipe 0.9lts. Im back to using the stock exhaust header and a 2" straight through from the cat back. Yeah Quick RX is his name and has about 260bhp & 420nm's of torque with the VF-10 at 18psi http://www.ausubaru.com/main/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1932 contains a full list of mods Awesome achievement:headbang:

If your car has engine has problems at a certain part of throttle, it could be a bad TPS (throttle position sensor) Must do mods are 1. Intercooler... a must for a boosted motor, 2nd hand top mount IC's are usually pretty cheap on ebay, especially wrx ones. 2. Better flowing exhaust, 2.5" from turbo back with sports mufflers will sport you a good few extra ponies 3. Make sure your ignition components are in good condition, coil, leads, spark plugs ect. I thought they would be the same, my gregories says that the efi systems from 84 to 86 are the same system, with minor differences. Have a look and see if it is the same connector.

Fail Safe Mode In Your Ecu
ausubaru92 replied to manxsta's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The bare minimum you should have hooked up is "injectors for fuel delivery, disty for ignition pulse, TPS to tell it how open the throttle is, MAF to calculate how much air there is, coolant temp to tell help it idle when it is cold, o2 to fine tune mixture, and knock sensor will retard timing if there is pinging (although i was under the impression that the 3 plug ecus didnt control timing as it still has a vac and mech advance unit on the disty) Any less than this and your engine will not run at its optimum. Now, in fail safe mode it should run on just injectors, disty and tps (the tps will substitute for the maf) but it wont run well. I think you may be confused, lambda is the symbol for wavelength (looks like this λ) If you are thinking air/fuel mixture, maybe you mean "stoich" -
i have too much free time.

Sweet ride, wish mine was that tidy. Are you gonna put on a TD04?? What have you got going into the bonnet, looks like black wires near the middle, closest to the windscreen? -
WJM has seen another thing...EA82 information
ausubaru92 replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Come to think of it,.. I agree So somehow we have to find a way to provide more coolant flow into the turbo side head,.. but how???? -
EA82 Head Gasket prices
ausubaru92 replied to ausubaru92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes i do own a carb'd l series, but i also own a touring wagon with a turbo vortex motor in it. Ive looked and i can get an ACL Valve regrind kit for a bit over $200 I think this may be my better option Thanks for the replys guys -
I went to the dealer to get some HG's the other day and they were $74 each, hg only. What do you pay???? Gannon

No good The parts dont exist in their parts books. Interestingly, the ecus in the parts book were numbered 22611AA*** (there was about 20 of them), our rally ecu had a part no. of 22611AA580, but wasnt in the book What is 82 Kpa in psi? Gannon

One bolt on the up-pipe flange has to moved about half an inch back. and the compressor outlet points toward the flywheel as opposed to straight up. No big deal, plenty of board members have done it who will be happy to help you out

I need this CAR RUNNING!!!
ausubaru92 replied to SubySwack's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had a very similar problem,.. have you got blue spark, yellow spark is not good. So fuel down the throttle body didnt work???? it did for me. In the end,.. i unplugged the MAF, and it started (it ran rough but that was cos it couldnt calculate air flow) I plugged it back in and all was good. But i had spark, cos it would fire with fuel poured down its neck. Tripple check your timing and spark leads -
I will be goin to the Subaru dealer tomorro to get some head gaskets,... i will take some part numbers and see what i can find.

ausubaru92 replied to ausubaru92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There is no such thing as a stupid question,.. but yes i did remove the EGR. As far as penetrating fluid goes, ive been told to find an alternative to wd40,.. PB Blaster? INOX? any others Thanks Guys Gannon -

What country are you from? Here in Australia, some guy is making a kit to make liberty/legacy disks, hubs ect fit the l series and he is mass producing them. www.ausubaru.com may be of some help to you. there are plenty of guys who have done the ej20t conversion to l series

Just wondering,... if you can put an ej20 or ej22 in an l series or XT,... why cant you put an ez30 (3L 6cyl out of legacy) in your xt6 That would be awesome:headbang:

Turbo Airflow Meter same as normal GL?
ausubaru92 replied to yourmom's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If your 88 non turbo was a MPFI, then yes it will work on a 88 Turbo. If it was SPFI, no it wont. Gannon -

How is the Wastegate controlled?
ausubaru92 replied to habib99's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Some models had what was called a WGDS (wastegate duty solenoid) and this was an altitude compensator. From what i believe, some models had it, and others didnt,. so i suppose it depends on your geographical location. If the rubber hose goes from the compressor outlet directly to the wastegate articulator, chances are you didnt get the wgds. The wgds had 3 pipes, one goes to the compressor outlet, one goes to the wastegate articulator and the 3rd i think goes to the air pipe before the turbo (between airbox and turbo) the wgds is located behind the injector resistor pack. Hey Peeps, Im a noobie here!!
ausubaru92 replied to EA82T Wagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Have a look at ausubaru.com there are a few other NZ people on there as well A bypass valve is also known as a plumb back blow off valve or stealth blow off valve (this is what they are often refered to as in aftermarket parts stores) I think that 18psi is the highest i have heard of, but i wouldn't try that without extensive engine mods. And yeah heat is your enemy -
I went up this morning and thought i would unplug the maf. started it, nothing.... Poured fuel down the throat, it ran,..... stumbled,.. so i hit the accelerator pedal and it died. Repeated it and VROOOOOM So i thought it must have been a bad maf so i plugged it back in. It ran:slobber: ... so i unlpugged the air intake, it died:confused: So maf is good and the car now runs The only problem is that there is smoke rings coming out of the radiator pipe (no radiator at the moment) so must be a headgasket And there is oil in the turbo,... prolly not a good sign But it runs,.... YAY FOR GANNON Thanks guys for your input:headbang:

EA82 Cylinder Heads Cracked Between Valves
ausubaru92 replied to Newsoobowner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Here is a document that will show you that cracks between the heads will not cause and problems http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=41348&page=2 3rd post down, labeled "headcracks.pdf Gannon -
I have started,.. a few problems
ausubaru92 replied to ausubaru92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The WGDS is sorta an altitude compensator, it allows higher boost where there is lower outside air pressure If you live close to the sea, i dont suppose it will matter that much, but your ecu will throw a code. Im gonna work it out soon and i will report back with my findings Gannon
