  1. Just got done with my head gasket job, started it up and it ran great, so I think I was sucsessful. Came back to start it up and it wouldnt turn over. All that happenes is a high pitch buzz comes from the starter motor, 5 seconds later it stops and a lower pitch buzz comes from around the starter. I would assume this is a bad starter but since I just did a head gasket job and disconnected a lot of wires I thought it might be a bad connection but I can't find one. Anyone know what it could be. Also how do I hot wire the starter, do I just connect wires to where the battery cables connect to the starter? Thanks
  2. I did the both up rotate the engine ordeal. I will stick with that for now. Thanks for the input, startin this mother fa up tomarrow.
  3. Shoot, I fallowed the Manual already, but that is a fairly quick step to re-do. Does it matter which one is up and which one is down. Also, is the beleif that this is better arguable or is it pretty much subaru fact? Thanks
  4. Never mind, I understand whats going on. The passenger side doesnt free spin I just thought it did, just paniced a little bit and got ahead of my self. I opened the cam cover and everything is fine.
  5. I just replaced the head gaskets on my 1990 loyale ea82T and I am now installing the timing belts. I went to line up the marks to gear connecting to the camshaft and it was tough to move, unlike the pasenger side which moved with ease. I am wondering if this has something to do with the distributor causing tension or is this a problem. It will move then about a half a turn then their is resistance then it will release and about half a turn later there is resistance. During the head gasket replacement I did not mess around with the camshaft or distributor at all, i pulled them off and kept them together, the rocker arms seem to be right in place as well. Any thoughts?
  6. I can not find the propper torque specifications in my haynes, its probably their but I cant fin them. It is a 1990 loyale 1.8 turbo.; If anyone knows that would be great
  7. Everything looks great now that the head is off, I can see where the gasket failed, it was a large break. Now that the head is off should I soak it in laquer thinner or clean it thouroughly? its a 1990 loyale turbo 1.8
  8. The back bolt on my turbo will not come undone. It is stuck and I cant get anything but a simple wrench to fit around it and that is not working at all. What have you guys used to get it undone. I am trying to do a head gasket job, it looks like it may be possible to take off the head without removing the turbo, is it? Also, the head gasket on that side is the one that is fine, the other one had oil water resinate in the pcv valve hose so I know it was that one that was leaking, if I can't get it undone I am not going to replace it. Is this a good idea or should I grind that mother off?
  9. I am looking at my haynes right now, it is only for a manual and says to align the marks on the flywheel to the bell housing. I can not do that with an automatic so I am stuck. Im workin on a 1990 loyale ea82T. I assume there is a way to do this with an auto, i wish it was a stick, but the deal was to good to be picky. Its probably in the manual somewhere, but I havent found it yet. Also on my Turbo that one bolt on the exhaust to turbo intake that is jammed in a position where only a wrench can get at is giving me a hrad time. Any suggestions on how to free it up. I am using some bolt loosener, but I just dont have enough room to get leverage. Thanks yall
  10. Im in the middle of a head gasket job on my new sube. I pulled the main hose coming off the top of the valves, the one that meats with the other hose from the other hose from the other valves, it is the only one from the valves and is thicker than most of the hoses. And it was filled with brown clay like stuff. It was only filled on the side that the head gasket is blown, it is probably related to the blown head gasket but im wondering if there is anything i should do because of this. Also on the timing belts, should I just mark them where they were and take them off? Or is there a better way, my manual is not clear to me how to do this. Thanks
  11. I pulled one of the hoses that is going into the valve cover, it is the thickest one, it meats in the middle with the other valve cover. Well that mother was clogged with brown, bronze crud, I mean clogged. That is the side that has the blown head gasket so Im sure they are related, anyone know what this is and if their is anything I should do because of it.
  12. I am now to the timing belt removal and it seems that I should only have to remove the left and right outer most parts and not everything, but my manual doesnt make it clear. The manual refers me to timing belt removal and says I need to undue the crankshaft and take off the starter motor but I am pretty sure I dont need to do this, is any one knows I would love to as well. huh? anyone? anyone?
  13. A few queastions about this head gasket replacement. I have removed everything and labled all the wires and hoses and am now getting to the parts removal stage. I am not quite sure of if I am going to have to remove the power steering pump , dont think I do. Let me know if ya know, thatd be superb.
  14. I just found some at this website: http://replacement.car-stuff.com for a 118.00 something for the oem. I am going to pick up a repair manual as well, as I will need one I am sure. All of the Haynes ones I see cover a broad range of years, does it cover every car during that year and if so are there any that are specific to years and models.
  15. I am going to dig into my new 1990 Loyale ea82 turbo, and I was wondering if there are head gasket sets that are better then others. Also I have a step by step of what to do, that was from a school database but it kind of sucks and I can't find any step by step in using search. ANy leads on where I can find a good step by step would be great
  16. wow, i didnt realize i posted that in the marketplace. I tried the search funtion but it comes up with so much stuff that isnt about the head gasket replacement. It doesnt matter though because my brother is printing me out the step by step from his schools auto tech data base, so i dont need you guys anymore. a joke a joke, I will never turn my back on usws
  17. I need to find a good post describing how to replace a head gasket. I just found my new baby, it is an 88 GL, 5 speed, turbo, with 130k. My neighbor is moving and needs to sell. He took it to a mechanic and had it diagnosed, it needs a new head gasket, other than that it runs perfect. Hes selling it for $400!!!!. I am taking it to my mechanic to check it over before I purchase it to make sure everything is good, but I am stoked.
  18. Ill be riding back country by early december, just gotta be worth manhadeling your board, i go through one a year atleast. Season has started already, damn my luck.
  19. Ive been trying to figure out what was wrong with my 87 GL, thought it was the head gasket but I found out for sure yesterday on the freeway. It was running like it had been, underpowered but doing okay, had good oil pressure and normal heat, when POP!!! And then the sound of a cylinder dying and smoke was EVERYYWHERE. I need a new engine now and have a want add up on this site, but I don't want to wait long because it is now snowboard seasson which is why I own a subby. If anyone knows a good place to find a subaru engine in Western Wa, or knows someone that has a stockpile or has any leads I would be much appreciative. I need an EA82 and it is for a 87 GL manual non turbo FI, I think that there are a broad range of years that fit. If nothing comes along Im gonna bag the car and part it out, its all there and everything is perfect except the right axel, just a heads up.
  20. My 87 GL 1.8 L 4 wheel drive manual is running underpowered and leaking coolant internally, I beleive it is through the head gasket. The engine has 139000 on it, and has had some overheating issues but nothing extreme. The pistons on the passenger side are the ones that are underpowered, I can disonnect them and I can barely notice a difference at idle, however when I drive it I do notice a difference in power, but it is less than I would expect. If I disconnect a piston from the drivers side it makes a huge difference and the engine looses rpms and will almost die. I am going to get a compression test but was wondering if the head gasket problem could have anything to do with theses pistons being underpowered. Also there are no signs of a cracked head such as coolant in the oil, but i suppose that is possible. Thank You
  21. The engine seems more powerful at low rps when it isnt heated all the way up, could this be because the coolant is not flowing yet so it not getting into my heads and fouling up the cylinder and such?
  22. Could this be resposible for it being underpowered? Obviously so could a cracked head. Well anyways, I will be ripping into it this weekend, cuz I have to drive to school and work this week.
  23. I heard if you run your car with the radiator cap off and theres no pressure it means your heads arent cracked, is this a fairly sure thing?
  24. coolant does not leak out. I think its coming out because it smokes sometimes and it doesnt smell like oil. The coolant probably instantly vaporizes because the exhaust pipe is hot.
