Advice on buying an ’85 Subaru GL Sedan

Why is that (that automatic transmission kills it)? Thanks. -SQ93 -

Thanks for posting that. Very informative and entertaining. As a long-time and loyal Legacy owner, I found that very interesting. -sq93 -
I think some of the others posting are right, see how your gas mileage averages out over several tanks. Different gas pumps shut off at different times, so if you didn't fill at the same pump twice in a row, that can introduce a lot of variance in what your true gas consumption was. If you can consistently average 39, now that is really pretty nice. -SQ93

Steve, Thanks for the wonderful phototravel essay! I too have visited Arches, Bryce Canyon, and Zion NPs a few times now and was not familiar with Grand-Staircase Escalante National Monument. Next time I visit that part of the world, it will have to be on my list. Once again, thank you very much! By the way, is AWD needed for the trip on those back roads or would a FWD Legacy be up to the task? -Charles, SQ93

Be prepared with as much documentation as you can as to what money you have recently put into the car (for mods or upgrades, etc.) so that you can get the insurance company to more fairly reimburse you for your loss (if your car is not found). I had put $500 into new tires on a vehicle of mine and two days later it was totaled and the insurance company only paid about $50 extra and said "well, it has to have tires." I wasn't feeling the best, dealing with headache (probably from a concussion) and so I accepted the deal. My insurance company did take care of my medical bills when the other driver's (the other driver was the one at fault) company refused to pay my medical bills. If your car is found, I hope it is good condition and has not experienced too much damage. Good luck and best wishes! -SQ93

As another poster suggested, the label in the engine bay should tell you. As California no longer charges that $300 smog impact fee, the only thing you have to worry about is if you live in one of the counties where it must pass smog check. If replacement parts are different for each engine (CA and Federal), that I don't know.

Repair manuals
SQ93 replied to shorinjin's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Have you tried eBay? It usually has run me $10-60 for repair manuals for my vehicles when buying them on eBay and that is for the factory service manuals. Chilton's or Hayne's books usually for $20 or less, including shipping. -
I tried to be helpful to area farmers by using the 89 octane ethanol, but it just killed my gas mileage by at least 10% and in some cases, more. My 1993 Legacy L wagon (236k) also did not run as well on the ethanol, particularly in colder weather. Warm weather (above 50 degrees F) and 87 regular gas and I get 22-24 city and 28-31 highway (even fully-loaded). Higher driving speeds and the gas mileage dips. Colder weather also makes it worse.

I've never had that sound in my '93 Legacy L wagon (236k miles), but it still doesn't really like temperatures below 25 degrees Fahrenheit or so, even with a new strong battery. I hope you figure out whta it is and also let us know. Oh, and that has to be one of the most catchy thread titles I have seen in a long time! ;-)
