  1. You can definately insert the block with them, they work great for that.
  2. If the guy is that interested he will bid and have the lash checked when he gets it. Not that hard or expensive to do if its really going to keep him up at night.
  3. I spotted one on Federal near US36 today for sale. $800. Couldnt tell if it was 4wd but it looked short like a 2wd. Black with the factory alloys.
  4. Get the real gutter mounts, cant really go wrong with Thule or Yakima.
  5. Nice work, congrats! Time to take the dog down the steepest hill you can find!
  6. 4.2 with new filter, add .5 to 1 full qt for rebuilt engine.
  7. Only very minimal differences, not really worth it if you ask me. Rebuild the motor and it should run like a new one again and you wont mind the emissions.
  8. Its not towing ability that the soobie lacks its BRAKES. But it looks like a fun time and I have no room to talk I flat towed a GL with a Legacy.
  9. It shouldnt have hurt anything and you can drain it thru the large drain plug, its probably a 21MM or 22MM plug dead center (widthwise) in the transmission near the front.
  10. I too have an ej22 conversion in my driveway and I am not looking back! The car I bought had no engine in it, but formerly had a 2.5 DOHC. Exhaust all bolts right up to the 1995 heads, intake off the 95-97 EJ22 with EGR passage works fine, and my only problem is the charcoal canister purge valve code coming up because I am too lazy to do something about it. Mine passed Colorado emisssions with flying colors. The debate over what engine is most reliable is really unnecessary. In my opinion the ea81 is the best, followed closely by the ej22, ej18 and 2.0 non turbo. The single overhead cam engines would have to win over a dual overhead IMO just from a "less moving parts" argument.
  11. Looks like a ea71 based only on the valve cover color. Either way, what a rocket that little beast would be.
  12. When I was working on mine I found that Toyota 4 runners have a heater under the center console thats much simpler and probably puts out more heat, a good rear heater replacement IMO. The switch is certainly much simpler and the hoses are the right size. People use the Subaru ej22 compressors all the time and have custom hoses made by hose shops. I dont see why the ea81 would be any different.
  13. Yes, they run funny with that pulley broken. Get a junkyard one, all the ej22 and ej25 ones are interchangable so somebody in town ought to have it. Try the yard on the South East side of town....I used to live in Iowa City but I cant remember the yard's name. They have a rent a wreck and are next to Watson Auto Body, north of US 30 and East of 280. They let you pull your own parts for a $1 entry fee.
  14. Just an FYI, using a shop vac around flammable stuff is deadly. 2 people made the 5:00 news that I can remember from doing that.
  15. No on the torch theres fuel in the carb. Use the grabber to fish out what you can, then Id soak it in carb cleaner and then start it with hopes that it just burns up but have a fire ext handy. Youre friend is a total dufus.
  16. The last 2 I have sold went for 240 and 330, which is amazing. I wish it had been my $ though, the first was a guy getting rid of old Subaru parts and the 2nd was a coworker. The 1st one was offered on USMB first but the 2nd wasn't as he wanted more than the typical $100 people pay here.
  17. The oil filler neck bolts, thermostat housing, and the cam crank sensors just use a 1/4" ratchet and snug them. The intake same but use a 3/8" ratchet of around 8-12" long with a 6" extension and it should be about right, just make sure they all feel the same.
  18. You may want to make it into a Rhino Buggy if you can weld. http://www.rhinobuggies.com.au/
  19. Tooth off on the distributor Id say. Then re-adjust timing.
  20. Have yours Rodded by a radiator repair shop.
  21. Ive got a Subaru Van. The ultimate Subaru minivan would be an 87 VW Vanagon Syncro with an ej22 conversion done on it. AWD and Subaru engine and Subaru personality really IMO.
  22. Im in the process of doing a 3.90 one. Ill keep u in the loop if it works.
  23. Next time get one from MWE. Could have sent it back with the engine.
