  1. Love it. Keep it off the road from October to March minimum though, or you wont be driving it many more years. They just rot in salt states.
  2. If its the long one, I think it goes onto the engine crossmember. Try lying under the front end and lining up the tabs on the crossmember with the pushbar and see if its close.
  3. Im a maybe, depends on how the WCSS show trip and the van turn out to be. 2 ppl, 1 dog, 1 vehicle.
  4. Im Registered. Wish me luck in completing my goal of completing the vanagon and actually showing up!
  5. Creep under the car and take the side of your fist and gently bang everything you can see. Try the driveshaft u joint, mine was the culprit when it did that. It also caused the steering wheel to shimmy at 57-60MPH for a long while.
  6. Pretty cheap if I have the same one you need.
  7. Check out the USRM article. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/article.php?a=72
  8. Ratchet straps can be really helpful on things like this when your short on people.
  9. Motorcycle cleaner works really well, called S100. Try a Harley or Honda motorcycle dealer.
  10. I believe its the Canister purge solenoid valve. Thankfully they fail fairly regularly so dont feel bad about breaking it. Theres going to be a part number on the side of it when you get it off. Just use that to order a new one. No need to take it somewhere its easy with a 6" extension and a 10MM socket to remove from the rear side of the intake. Just 1 bolt and 2 vac lines.
  11. Putting in an EJ22 doesnt require a wiring harness change. THats what I would do.
  12. Wow, really glad you made it and the Brat looks alot better than it should. John doesnt mess around making cheap crap for sure, another piece of evidence.
  13. That and are you sure you didnt drain the gear oil instead of motor oil? Easy to do on a car with 3 drain plugs and an unconventional engine/trans layout. (better though LOL) Gear oil stinks worse than regular but on a bad engine that oil smell bad too especially if its been sitting a long time.
  14. Sorry, won't work lots of difference in piston size. Thats really not that bad of #s either.
  15. Ive had the disty rotor/cap be so out of contact material that this happened. If you have one, or a whole distributor handy try swapping it out.
  16. First, the heads need to be resurfaced. The dealer is wrong there. They warp and warp often. They don't see as many as CCR, a Subaru only engine builder does, who surfaces all their 2.5 heads as part of the rebuild. If you are going to keep the car for 3 years/36K more miles get an engine from them. Warranties are a nice thing. The prices seem about what I would expect. The fan not coming on should have triggered a check engine light. The prior overheating probably led to this but frankly it was inevitable. The lack of the last service is not a factor here. They would not have been able to notice imminent head gasket failure if you cant in driving it around. Selling it as is isn't going to do you alot of good compared to selling it with a fresh head gasket job. I converted mine from EJ25 to EJ22 to get rid of the engine but they aren't bad if you do the regular coolant changes yearly and change the oil regularly.
  17. You have the most reliable engine Subaru ever built in your car, unless you just want more power this upgrade isnt worth it. They both bolt right up but youd have to change wiring.
  18. I wouldnt call that the dark side. I love our new Outback, 2.2 conversion and the cam grind really make it move nice.
  19. Its usually cheaper than an engine rebuild for a trans job, give em a call it can't hurt.
  20. Yeah I have rebuilt one before. You cant do it from the front the trans comes apart rear to front so this would require a full teardown.
