Midwest Subaru Meet, Saturday Lunch
ShawnW replied to ShawnW's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Found this place... http://www.google.com/local?q=restaurants&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&safe=off&near=Onawa,+IA&dm=full&lc=0&radius=0&latlng=42021110,-96093890,41997854,-96111373 They are open 11AM-10PM on Saturdays. I asked if they have seating for 25-40 people and he said they do...if we all want to sit at a big table we need to call ahead but I don't think thats necessary we can all just pile into whereever theres room and sit in as big a groups as the tables allow? That be okay? Compromise of Pizza hut and local mom/pop place? Eh? -

Midwest Subaru Meet Parts swaps?

I split this off the other thread to keep things less confusing. I am looking for a Velour rear seat from an 83 or 84 GL wagon in blue velour. I have a tan passenger seat and a drivers seatback from an 84 Turbo wagon tan that I will be willing to trade or accept $ for. -

Clicking Axle: Worry Or Not?
ShawnW replied to Fuji Fellow's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Jack the car up, chock tires. Remove wheel, remove axle nut. Remove 14MM ball joint bolt. I use a gorilla bar (long pry bar) and pop the knuckle off the balljoint just below the 14MM ball joint to knuckle bolt. Then I approach the axle pin. I take a 10MM deep metric impact socket, stick the punch into that (fits perfect) and then stick an appropriate amt of extentions onto it so I can hammer on the "extended" punch easier. Then you can slide the axle off the inner stub. Then you persuade the axle out of the bearings (alot easier on a Legacy) by tapping the end of the axle with a hammer (protect threads with woodblock or use a plastic deadblow hammer). Once the axle is out its a reverse of the removal. Applying a little wheel bearing grease to the axle end makes the slide in easier. The control arm can be popped back into the knuckle pretty easy by either tapping again with the deadblow hammer or by using a floor jack gently. I find the 2nd method to be a little dangerous but it works well. (courtesy of MilesFox on that tip). I use Air tools for the axle nut and 14MM ball joint bolt. Lots faster. HAND torque lug nuts especially on legacy models as this will screw up your brake rotors. It will warp them rather quickly. -

Bragging time.... Today I replaced the pass side axle on a 95 FWD Auto Legacy in 28 min and the drivers in 21. Yesterday I did the pass side one on the Brat in 31 min. Clicked when turning hard left was left axle today. -
I don't want to lock this post. Please dont push this any further with each other.

I replaced mine with some used ones, and I used a dab of Black Permatex in all 4 corners and a dab in the straight sections about midway. Just enough to secure it down and still make it easy to pull them off someday. Stopped the leakin for me. Permatex is always a last resort for me but its always tempting to try when something wont seal or hold.

Link is good now.

Gear Oil for 4WD Dual Range?
ShawnW replied to MorganM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Phew. I am so used to the Northern "factory spec" that I don't even know about using different anywhere else. Ill have to be more careful of that. Good thing MorganM lives even further north than I do. -
Midwest Subaru Meet, Saturday Lunch

Right now I am waivering between 2 major options for lunch during the tour drive. 1 option is to have everybody bring their lunch and eat at the shelter at the Park after the tour drive. 2nd option is to stop in Onawa. They have a Pizza Hut there, McDonalds, and a few other unknown family restaurant type places. The Pizza Hut looked pretty good from the outside. We could either order ahead of time and pick it up and then take it back to the park or we could eat in with this option. This is probably the most weather friendly option as well (if it rains we are indoors for a while together). -
Please reply on this post with your planned arrival date to the area and the general route you will be taking. I will start with: Arrive Saturday Morning to the area coming from Eastern Iowa. I will take I-80E to I-29N. I am very much willing to meet people along the way to caravan in especially if you are worried about finding the park. (personally I am worried about people being able to find it.)

Timing Belts and their covers...

Sometimes you can reach around with a pik tool and push on the bolt or the nut in the plastic and turn it to get it to pull away while turning. Worked on a Legacy for me once. -
Disconnecting AC compressor
ShawnW replied to drewcifer85710's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Do not let the freon out into the atmosphere. Also please do not post on the board asking how to do something illegal. You have the option of unbolting the ac compressor and moving it to the side of the engine bay while still leaving the hose connections intact. Do that, repair the engine, and then when the car runs again have the system purged or recharged. -

80W90 gear oil is the factory spec and seems good on the synchros. -
horribly wobbly steering wheel

The people I sold my Brat to fixed a shake like that by replacing the driveshaft U-joints. Quicker than replacing a front axle... if you have a driveshaft around try switching. -
I believe I have 2 of these switches. DaveAP has dibs on the one and there another in my garage. Let me know if you need it. Shawn
