ea81 valve spring compressor?
ShawnW replied to soobiefreak85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I like how that one is assembled wrong but easily changed. Thats the kind I use on all Subaru heads and it works great. -
The 96 has different torque for the end caps than the 97-99 one does so lets not confuse the matter there. The end caps are a lower torque than the center ones without the thrust control surface/groove. The haynes will get you in trouble its pretty awful about having the torque specs correct as it doesnt know the differences in years many of the times.

Bought Bratman18's Brat.
ShawnW replied to fattie's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Welcome. You have some reading to do in the OffRoad and Old Gen forums. Essentially there isn't a whole lot you can do on the camber without converting to different hubs or a major surgery basically. -
Theres a shaft the length of the main trans case that slides into the inside of the torque converter. If that stays with the converter pull the converter out far enough (6-8") and the larger 2" piece that clips to the converter will be cleared and you can grab the smaller shaft and hold it from coming out. If this shaft comes out its no big deal, just push it back into the transmission, and pull the converter away with its piece thats clipped to it. I can upload a photo to clarify if needed. PM me.

Towing a BRAT with 2 lugs per hub?
ShawnW replied to 81EA81's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Locking thread. You know its not safe. Don't risk the lives of other people or your own with this idea. Fix it before towing it or have it towed by a tow truck. -
Do you have any trips to Denver planned? I could provide a rebuilt or a used one.

I might be missing the point here, kindof sleep deprived but it sounds like the FWD system is broken and the 4wd system works. Wouldn't it be possible you broke a front axle (pinging noise indicated above).

I have seen the clearances change after torquing the head but it doesnt happen very often on these engines. Probably about 3-5 out of a couple thousand I have had to put back together either for rebuild or head gaskets. Your clearances seem about right. Sometimes you can simply move a shim from one valve to another to make things slightly better. For the most part dealers dont stock these shims.

1984 subaru brat 5speed conversion problems
ShawnW replied to superbrat84's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
He said he put an XT trans in, did you put a 3.70 trans in where a 3.90 one was? -
I see a lot more power steering pumps needing reseal than cam seals leaking. Also, I use the grey metalic gasket that comes with most good quality water pumps or the factory water pump gasket. I see no need to use a silicone here this gasket works great and is a lot easier to change out when its time for a new water pump.

Or that there is gas in the car. I have had a few that sat for a period of time, towed them to the shop to rebuild them and the gas needle is where it was when parked but the gas evaporated and the level sensor doesn't move until you fill it up again. Strange but its happened two or three times now. You could also try spraying some carb cleaner into the throttle body and seeing if it backfires or verify that you have spark with another plug wire and spark plug.

who can make me a new master key?
ShawnW replied to dec0y13's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sorry about the slow response. The dealer finally gave up in their search for the key maker machine they had a couple years ago. I am going to order one so in the future I can simply make them here at RetroRoo in the shop. -
Changing brat front struts
ShawnW replied to Lachlan's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Control arm is the word you are looking for. It going to take some muscle if you can't get the control arm off as you are going to have to pull the bolt out of the top of the hub and lube it and hope the bottom of the strut will pop out of the hub knuckle unit. -
I know there are some used ones in my bins here I just need to know the knurl diameter if someone has one that is removed I will measure them and am happy to ship them for little to no cost.

1983 1.8l Fuel Injected Tubo Wagon
ShawnW replied to tomd's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The radiators are the same as any other ea81 body radiator with of course the addition of a trans cooler setup if you have the automatic trans installed in the car still.
