No spark from coil Please look
Sister7 replied to iluvdrt's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There is some type of transistor on the bottom of the coil bracket that gives you no spark when it goes. Also the coil bracket is a ground, so make sure it's clean. -
I only saw one EA82T at the tacoma yard, and it was missing the turbo and a bunch of other goodies
-
yup, and it's the only thing back there that a 19mm wrench will fit around
-
I went out to the tacoma Pull-A-Part today and there were several old subies. There's a red GL with 191K in the first row that has a VERY clean engine bay with a complete engine...if anybody's looking for a carbed EA82 this might be a good score, looks like the car's in there because it lost a battle of car vs. tree. It also has a nice set of wagon wheels with very new looking rubber. The alloys off of the 505 sitting next to it are gone . ps- I parked next to a silver GL-10 wagon...my car wanted to catch up with her cousin...was that anybody from the board?

Is this fixable? (after wreck)
Sister7 replied to Sister7's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, I've been thinking about it and I have an '81 wagon sitting around here that needs an engine and a transplant would probably be the easiest and cheapest way to go. I really want to fix my car, but mostly for emotional reasons. As a citizen of the real world, I've got to move on. Besides, I've always wanted to drive around with 3 headlights ....Thanks everyone for the opinions, it would have taken me forever to get this far on my own! -
How do 4WD EA82s do in snow autocross?
Sister7 replied to Syonyk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I don't know, but I have a GL-10 sedan that would like to find out -

Is this fixable? (after wreck)
Sister7 replied to Sister7's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thank you everybody for all of the replies! My plan is to fix it without purchasing any more cars. The car is light blue, and as I have found out, a slightly different light blue than they made in '88. To everyone who's offered help and/or parts thanks a bunch! We'll be in touch:D I'm going to take off as much as I can today, so I can see what's underneath. I"ll post back later. -
I would really like to fix my car, but I have NO experience with body work. Does this look fixable? It's an '86 GL carbed with D/R 4wd. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showgallery.php?ppuser=6813&cat=500 My dad thinks we should hook a come-along to it and pull the front out. My brother wants to cut out the front and weld a new clip in. I don't know if it's worth it, but if they're willing to help me..... Before the wreck the car ran like a dream, and afterward it drove right up the tow dolly like a champ. There is no other body damage besides the wreck. The only obvious "mechanical" problems are the radiator and a punctured oil filter, but it was a hard crash and there are always unknowns. It's been sitting like this in my driveway for over a month now, and it's depressing. What should I do?

Need Oil Pump Help Badly!!!
Sister7 replied to Bobby_boucher's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
How many bolts did you take out? My Hayne's says there are 3, but there are really 4. The fourth bolt is hiding behind the crank pully, and is a little tricky. As soon as I took it out my oil pump fell off. Good luck! -
I got a new car today! It's a 1988 GL-10 turbo sedan, 5spd with full time 4WD (single range with diff lock) and it's got the 3.7 LSD. Functional sliding moon roof, had air suspension once upon a time, now it has some really worn out struts and squeaky springs. Digi dash that works...I'm not sure if I like it or not....and some super 80's rattly plastic hub caps (they gotta go!). I loved my GL, but the GL-10 seats are so much more comfortable. I drove it over 150 miles home without a hitch (well, windshield wipers don't work). All in all, a heck of a deal for $720! Here's a couple pics of it when I got it home: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showgallery.php?ppuser=6813&cat=500

Thanks for the kind words everybody.....I just noticed the results are in for the rallycross.
-
Well, I had a FANTASTIC time at the rally cross....and that gravel road on the way home. I had the blue '86 wagon and my friend Sean had the black imprezza with stickers all over it. On our way home though, we got in a really bad wreck on I-5, just before the 512 exit. Somehow everybody was OKAY, i've got some whiplash and some impressive bruises, but I'll heal. Thank God noboby was hurt. Sean's car is totaled for sure, and mine will be totalled by insurance, but might be fixable. Sean posed about it on NASIOC http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=816934&page=1&pp=25

I will be there, and it will be my first rally, so take it easy on me ....I'm caravanning down with a friend, we'll be departing Seattle early in the AM

Can't find right oil filter
Sister7 replied to subardoom's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've never had that problem. I use WIX or Napa gold, part # 51361 (wix) or Napa #1361 (they're the same filter). -
EA81 is giving me the blues!
Sister7 replied to Sister7's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I might be missing something, but how can a bad radiator cause the guiser effects? Just by boiling the water? To me it seems more forced than that. The electric fan turns on, and there are no cold spots on the radiator. Thanks. -
Before: My EA81 was overheating and blowing coolant out the radiator cap like old faithful. It was not exhibiting any other signs of head gasket issues. Changes: -new head gaskets -ground valves, valve seats -new tstat -new water pump -various other new seals -cleaned everything thoroughly Observations: -"bridge cracks" in both heads, look just like all of the "okay" bridge crack pictures floating around here -no other cracks were observed on the heads or block -we didn't (doh!) use any feeler gauges to check for warpage, but the heads and block seemed straight if that's worth anything After: Car still overheats and spews water. It will reliably start spewing when the temperature gets about 3/4 up the gauge. It is very forceful and happens at once; the water is launched a good 8" in the air. I did say water, and I know that water has a lower boiling point than coolant, but I don't think it's boiling over, it really seems to be pushed out by combustion gases. There are still no other signs of head issues- no white smoke, no oil/coolant exchanges, etc. So, to me it still seams like a head issue, but could it be something else causing the overheating and spewing? So far my plan is a compression test, and then....? Thanks in advance!

Head Gaskets, HC in Coolant test.
Sister7 replied to Fuji Fellow's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You can buy a "block tester" from NAPA for like $50 (it looks just like this: http://bestproducts.asiannet.com/detail/25557/195425557.html ) But it's a waste of money. It has this fluid that is suppost to change from blue to yellow if there are exhaust gases in your coolant, but it's never worked, even when my car was puking exhaust gas/coolant foam. I don't know what they use in shops to test for HC, but I'm assuming it's something slightly more reliable. -
I'll be there, one GL wagon, one old man, one friend.
-
I know that the relay is located up under the dash, above the fuse box and to the left of the steering wheel. There are four relays there, I think two are for your headlights (someone correct me if I'm wrong)...the ones with all of the black wires. That's about all I know, I'm sure someone smarter will come along soon!
-
I just pulled the heads off of my EA81, and three of my cylinders have cracks between the exhaust and intake valves. I know this is common for the EA82's, is it the same for EA81's? The cracks are all fairly small. I'm going to clean the heads tomarrow to get a better look. Thanks!

Coloured dash Illumination?
Sister7 replied to ausubaru92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Finger nail polish also works quite well on bulbs and it's cheap. I've had several tail lights painted in this fashion. -
A stethascope has suprised me
Sister7 replied to pyromanic's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Probably the oil pump gasket isn't sealing. Check out the repair manual for ticking: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/article.php?a=8
