I purchased two cv axles for my 1999 impreza outback sport about three years ago. They were installed by a professional mechanic reknown for his quality workmanship. After only thirty thousand miles, the axles started clicking during turns under acceleration. My mechanic examined them and found that everything was OK externally, but that the joints were probably assembled without enough grease. We used a grease gun needle and injected about 1/2 cup of cv joint grease in each joint. This solved the problem. I think that CV of Ocala should be more careful about the quantity of grease when assembling the joints. If it were not for a very knowledgable mechanic, I would have bought new axles and been out of another two to three hundred dollars. ken moreau:mad: bridge city, louisiana

removing sheared bolt with drill bit stuck in it
cardineau replied to idosubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Harbor freight has a set of bits which are pointed for drilling glass. I'd try these first as they are cheap and are carbide tipped. Try drilling very lightly and give the bits lots of time to get the job done. cardineau -
I have jacked the truck on stands and both diffs are working in 4wd lo. nothing working in front or 4wd hi. it is beginning to look like the high range is out in the transmission.
-
I've tried every kind of position of the fwd lever. The dash light only lights up on 4 lo. and it only lights up the 4wd light when in reverse. Is there also an electrical circuit which activates the transmission or is it only mechanical? Thanks for the help. cardineau

86 Brat D/R 4 speed tranny. Truck will drive normally in 4wd lo. In 4wd hi truck will not move. In normal front wheel drive truck will not move. No unusual noises. Axles and hubs are OK. Does anyone know anything about this type of problem? Any help would be appreciated. thanks cardineau

I don't know about everyone else, but I dislike the new exterior designs of the Tribeca and the new Impreza. Subaru has always represented modern practical design in keeping with high technical performance. These new designs look totally out of concept for Subaru. They look like an appeal to toyota celica yuppies. I believe that this will hurt sales tremendously and these designs will be short-lived. (lets hope) ken moreau cardineau

No ... I haven't even picked up the Brat yet. I've paid for it, but its still in Pennsylvania. I am retired and work on my older vehicles (Jeep CJ-7, 1980 Fiat Spyder) and now a Brat. I'm getting myself prepared to restore this Brat and want to be as Knowledgable as possible. I think that the Brat is in good shape, but from experience with these other two vehicles, I'll want it better. So ... any help in educating me as to the kind of vehicle parts which are compatible with the Brat would be welcomed. ken moreau PS I also make very fine wooden rowboats. -
Hi everyone, I now own three Subarus ... a 2004 forrester 2.5L ... a 2.2L 1999 Empreza outback sport ... and a new to me 1985 Brat GL with jump seats and a 1.8 EA81 carbureter engine. The two later models are not confusing to me at all. I know whats compatible with what. The Brat has me completely baffled. What cars and models and years are compatible with the parts of the Brat?? I need help in this regard big time! Help and an explanation would be greatly appreciated. Ken Moreau New Orleans cardineau ybk123@cox.net

New Old Brat on a long trip
cardineau replied to cardineau's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for the advice. I'm also taking a Haynes Manual and a flash light. I'll have quite a load boarding the plane ... it ought to be interesting. I'll let you know how I made the trip. cardineau -
hello everyone I have purchased a 1985 Brat GL on E-bay. I am now going to fly up to Pennsylvania and drive it back to New Orleans. The Previous owner says that the Brat runs well except at idle. What should I be concerned about on this trip? It has 127K miles and looks to be in good shape. Maybe the idle problem is a vacuum leak or something simple. Are there any known frequent failure items of this model? Thanks cardineau
