Welcome looking forward to checking it out
-
Thanks I'm excited to do the green. I'm Going to get all the black peeled off and get it done ASAP. As for the front end I'm probably going to get some flack for doing it this way but we just took the springs out and are sitting on the bump stops. I'm in the process of collecting some new suspension all around and will be changing the front to coilovers and the rear to independent rear suspension as well.

Yea we are pretty sure the HG went. We were messing with the carb and we think something got stuck because it idled at about 6k dead cold when we started it and then a few minutes later the oil was milky but no oil in the radiator. Something is probably wrong with the PCV as well but we are going to tear the whole motor apart and rebuild so we will find out all the damage when we get to it!

SO last night after tearing a big chunk out of my plastidip I decided to test a new color out...So here is the last picture of my brat being black =)
-
So here are a few more photos. Everything is in pretty decent shape besides blowing the head gasket.
-
Also, after my blow out the tire whipping around cracked my rear driver side tail light and ripped my mud flap off. If anyone has either of those items for sale/trade let me know please.

It's crazy to see all the differences in smog equipment from CA model and mine which is a 49 state and federal smog model

So a buddy of mine and myself picked up a 1980 brat with a 5spd before it was too late. If you remember me posting about two in the So.ca for 700 each a while back this is one of them. The kid that bought it broke some things and now it is up to us to fix it and bring it back to life. When we rolled up to check it out it was sitting on a flat tire and wouldn't start. We swapped a spare onto the flat tire and After tinkering with it we realized it was just running too lean so we adjusted the carb and got it started. We tried to limp it home and it died a few times. After checking under the hood to see what was going on we realized that the idle is all wonky and the accelerator cable is so stretched out that it wasn't moving the throttle when you stepped on the pedal. after rigging it up we were able to drive it home. Last night we were tinkering again and we are pretty sure a head gasket blew because now the oil is all milky and it spit up oil through the air cleaner....so now the fun begins. Our plan is to get the motor out pull the heads and check to see if they are warped at all. We will do all the necessary labor to get it going and while we have the motor out we will be changing every gasket we can think of and probably do a full motor rebuild. So keep checking back for updates. We ended up paying $300 for this one and keep checking back for updates!

Thanks for the Kind words ben! So I picked up a roll bar for the brat and also a buddy of mine saved a 1980 BRAT GL that has blown head gaskets and a few other issues...we will be bringing it back to life but for $300 can't complain. I will probably start a build thread for the cotton candy brat =)

So I am prepared for the haters who are going to hate. I lowered the front of my brat. I will be lowering the rear once we address a broken bolt head on the torsion bar. Untitled by Kevin Talley, on Flickr Untitled by Kevin Talley, on Flickr Really loving the difference it makes in handling. Also today on the way to subiefest I encountered some road debris and my rear tire blew out going 65 in Mojave, CA. After having my mother in law drive about 80 miles to bring me my spare with a new tire on it we got rolling again and decided to just return home. Untitled by Kevin Talley, on Flickr the tire dented the back of the car broke the tail light and took my mudflap from me! Other than that after putting the new tire on and a combination of the steadiness the new suspension gives the front end I hit a new record for speed. 87mph COuld have given it a little more but decided I better not risk the ticket!

Bump anyone planning on attending? I know in Bakersfield we have a caravan leaving with folks from fresno. I think I will be the only old gen Subaru leaving with our group.

It's probably best we don't ask about smog =)

So I have been at the house a lot since my new born is here and my 4 year old daughter and I have been taking peices off the BRAT to clean them up and paint them and getting things ready for the turbo install. She has taken a real interest in whats going on when I am working on it and that is one of the reasons this car isn't being sold anymore =) Pulled the Valve Covers and cleaned them up and put new gaskets on. Painted the tops of all of my filters. And finally got this little one in my hands. Now I am just waiting on the ehaust manifold to be finished and I will be putting together a Turbo 1.6 Brat And for the Non subaru stuff. Here is the my son Hunter.

Thanks! Today was a good day. Got the new Axle and Ball joint in. decided the front calipers need to be changed and ordered those parts. All in all it was a good day of learning everything seemed to go together relatively easily. Untitled by Kevin Talley, on Flickr My buddy snapped a pic of me installing the ball joint Untitled by Kevin Talley, on Flickr Old and new Ball joints Untitled by Kevin Talley, on Flickr crappy picture of the BRAT sitting on the ground!

So this weekend I took the BRAT out for its longest round trip drive to date and can say I am impressed and have no doubts about my vehicle any more. We drove from Bakersfield, CA to Pismo Beach, CA for a little Memorial day weekend camping. Round trip it was about 300 miles and not only took me about a half a tank each way! Hope everyone else had a great weekend. Here are some photos from last nights sunset watching....BRAT style Untitled by Kevin Talley, on Flickr Untitled by Kevin Talley, on Flickr Untitled by Kevin Talley, on Flickr

We still have to do the cutting and patching. All I've done so far is bring it down to bare metal to see how bad it is in places. Then I primed it to keep the surface rust from happening. We are also filling the holes where the side trim was, putting the hood scoop on basically building a roll pan for it because under the rear bumper is completely rotted out. So with that said the actual body work hasn't even started.
