87 1/2 xt 4 turbo what to do
northguy replied to tailgatewagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Brian, I've been trying to contact you about the third eye. E-mailed you, PM'd you, no response. What's going on? Please communicate with me. -
If you need to borrow a sawzall, let me know. I can hook you up.
-
Kelly, thanks. I'll PM you when I get back in town. Right now I'm in Homer celebrating my tenth anniversary. How's that for dedication to the board; taking time during ny anniversary trip to share with the USMB boys.

new subaru RX owner..looking for info
northguy replied to Ben L's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Welcome to the board. Check the archives for a posting that says something like FSM's for all or service manuals for all or something like that. It has a link to a bunch of downloadable full service manuals. Also, PM Dr. Rx on the board. -
got some of my soob pics scanned finally!

You may want to PM them to subafly. He could edit his original post by inserting them for consideration. -
Thanks to all for the input. I'll post pics in the Spring when it is done.

Hate to say there are favorites. But, the action pics tend to look better than those still shots, with the exception of really classic beauties: i.e. Clantieri's wagon. Good luck making the final cuts.

Jon, I'll probably take you up on your offer. Was wondering if I could get away with not puting on a lift. just putting on bigger rims and tires. Will they rub? (And neither postal system - Canadian or American - is as bad as the postal system of Mexico.)

Since it IS listed in the Older Subaru board, I'm guessing it is a 1969-1983 Gen 1,2,3 360/Brat/ GL/DL/ RX/ XT6 hybrid.

Got a stock 83 Brat. Bought a set of 14" pugs to put on it come spring. Question now is: can I run a 14" tire on the Brat without lifting it? If so, what size can I get away with? If not, what size tire may be optimal for a 3"lift (Ozzified) without completely bogging down the motor/ modifying the wheel wells? Until my brat gets rustladen, I plan to use it as a daily commuter. In a couple of years (Alaskan winters are tough on vehicles), I will look at making a mudder out of it.

One of the first things to enquire about with that mileage is if the vehicle has had the timing belt changed. 60K is the time to do that and it can be a major expense if you're not mechanically inclined (600 - 1,000 dependng onwhere you live and the shape of all of the tensioners and bearings...). I'll have to defer the questins about motor size and transmissions to those more knowledgable than me, but offhand, I believe the sedan and the wagon have the same motors (2.2 or 2.5) and there isn't any real advantage in transmissions, I believe.

Even conquering the myriad of problems with torsional rigity and how to reinforce the existing cab for safety sake once you cut into the roof line, onehas to beg the question: At 90, or even 80 (or 70) how do you want to spend you remaining time? If there is some quality bonding time to be had, maybe that would be a good use of time, but otherwise, he and you would be better off parting it out and picking up a Brat. Then spend some quality time out rallying in it with him. Andif you get him a really nice one, maybe he'll will it to you. (Maybe he'll be asked to be buried in it, though. Be careful not to make it too nice.)

'84 brat, front end problem
northguy replied to DaveAP's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Jack that side of the car up, grab the tire at the tip and bottom and wiggle backand forth. If it has excessive play (wobble), then you have a bearing problem. But that doesn't necessarily explain a clunking noise. -
Quick! heater blower switch question!
northguy replied to Snowman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Kelly, I can't help with the switch problem. Sorry. Just wanted to reming you to pick up4 center caps for wagon wheels while you're home if you can. Thanks again. Matt -
I agree, nice looking Brat. Eric - To see my brat sitting in my driveway is an offroad adventure. We've been here 9 years and only had 2 visitirs make it to the top of the drive - one was the Jehovah's Witnesses, and the other was a local politician running for reelection. You'd have to be desparate or devoted to want to come up where I live, or own a Subbie and like to play in the snow.

weber doesn't like the cold?
northguy replied to Snowman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Kelly, maybe this is an opportune time, or maybe not, but I just saw a posting for a turbo Legacy wagon (93) for 4k (maybe - my memory is a bit slow today - could be the cold weather) posted on the newer gen forum. Sorry, I just checked it and it's a sedan, not a wagon, although it is a 5 speed. It also is in PA - a long drive this time of the year. Oh, well. You'd do better to hand loose for Qman's -

If you were left to freeze for 4 days and then asked to work right off the bat, how would you respond? You didn't call Roxanne the "B" word did you? Never use the "B" or the "C" word towards your car. That'll cause irrepairable damage to your relationship with your vehicle.
