  1. PM Shawn W. He posted about the same idea elsewhere toanother member called bugaru. Good luck.
  2. I know personally of over 30 running, albeit in poor condition, 70's subbies in the Anchorage area alone. If one were to go into the bush, one would find at least that many again.
  3. Loose regulator arm? Where's the rattle coming from? Inside the door panel? High or low?
  4. Another option might be that a bolt on the regulator arm came loose. Hold the glass with one hand and give the door a brisk shake back and forth, listening for rattles. If you hear something rattling around in the bottom of the door, it is probably a bolt that came loose. Find it and replace it in it's original position. If not, listen for some flopping. That will tell you if it's a stop, or an adjustor arm.... Good luck.
  5. I sure haven't seen him around, and I've seen probably every brat in town. There are only about 10 regulars running around, and most of them are in pretty bad shape. A clean brat is a rare find and lusted after by many. I am one of the fortunate ones. (This may be the only time I ever use an emoticon.)
  6. If the part referenced is the same as the one on my 83 brat, it's the circular part that sits on the breather and controls the gate in the air intake. Pull it off by removing the screw that holds the keeper on, remove the circular part taking care to twist the little J leg off of the flap in the air intake. The test is simple: depress the little J leg, put your finger over the vacuum line hole. If it holds a vacuum, it's good; if not, the diaphram has a hole and it needs to be replaced.
  7. An 18 x 20 bluetarp and 4 cinder blocks will do as a temporary garage and will cost you less than $20. The cost to replace your DL, if you ever want to, would be way more. The hedge here is if you ever want to part it out, you'd get a ton more than if you sold it outright, especially in the midwest. On top of that, the relationships and percs you could establish through helping out others with hard to find parts would pay back even greater dividends. Good luck.
  8. Thule roof rack system. Avoid the dinged up rims of catching gravel from being kicked up by the tires.
  9. So Richie, surprise me: what new/old subbies do you/ will you have for sale soon? I am so tickled with the performance of the brat you sold me that I am thinking of coming down again next spring/summer to get another, and would prefer to buy one from someone I knew and trusted. You did me right last time, so I know what I'd be getting. Matt
  10. C.R. Lawrence makes a full line of tools for removal and replacement of all auto glass. You might see if they are on-line. If not, visit a local glass shop and ask to see their catalog.
  11. ...good enough to drive the AlCan highway (approx. 2,500 miles) averaging 25 mpg, and good enough to drive it back down if I choose to. ...good enough to drive in Alaska in the winter, and climb my driveway, which is steep enough to have caused some people to literally (I kid you not) defacate in their pants. Snowman and Batle wagon medic, you should give it a try in the middle of winter just for fun.
  12. I can't attest to others' and their motors, but my brat has a replacement motor in it. It has 127K on it and is running strong. The only major difference (and an easy way to tell) I can see is the block is not threaded for a screw in engine heater. Thus, I'll have to epoxy a plate heater on the bottom of my oil pan in another month when the termination dust finally settles. Other than that, I am quite happy with it.
  13. Morgan, if it makes you feel any better, I was out huntig last weekend when 15 off-roaders wandered up the trail where we were. I watched the circus they were involved in for over three hours where 9 of the fifteen attempted to make it through this large mud hole and then up this huge, muddy hill where I was. 6 of the poor souls had to turn back, 3 others broke parts, all 9 who made it through had to be winched through... it looked like a lot of work. And they weren't too happy when we left and slid right through on 4 wheelers like it was nothing. The worst part was they had to go back through it on the way out. I visited their web site (http://www.alaskaoffroad.com) and read a statement about not tearing up the land - there's a false statement (but who am I to talk; I was riding my 4 wheeler).
  14. Richie, if you're down on cash, just put another car up for sale. I can certainly give a glowing testimony to the cars you sell. The black brat has 127,000+ miles and going strong.
  15. There's a member named snowstormer - lives in upper WI - who has posted quite knowledgeably on the old and new site. He seems to know his stuff, but I can't speak for him. He may have a fa,ily and/or other committments.
  16. I thought ALL old subarus smelled. That's part of their "charm".
