  1. I have installed over 300 windshields in different years of subarus (before I became a teacher), and none of them are very fun to do. If you're not experienced, pay the shop to do it for you. It beats breaking one and having to buy another shield.
  2. If you could sell the idea as "Nascar in the woods," you'd have unlimited support. Maybe that's the way to approach it.
  3. Well, I will have been back in school 2 weeks by then, and moose season will be in full swing. I doubt I'll be able to make it. I may have to send some crab down to Ed to cook up in my absence. If I do, I'll post how much I sent so he doesn't eat it all himself.
  4. Have you been driving around sharp corners at high speed? That will sometimes account for oil in the air filter.
  5. Welcome to the board. It looks like you've grow up with a subaru collection.
  6. Hey Brad (Torxxx), the start of this post threw me for a flashback, back to the times of BattleWagonMedic. (Jon) Boy could he rant. I guess that's why he was banned about 6 times. Just be patient, Brad. Things are cyclical. The signatures are gone for now, but I have faith that they will return one day. You could always list your car as your age, or state... there's always a solution.
  7. Zap, Ed, Rob, Ken... the list is unreal. Give one of those guys a call and see if they have time to give you a hand. They are all great guys and are known for their generosity if their lives aren't too compacted with other responsibilities. There is a wealth of knowledge at your fingertips, and a couple of cases of beer and a promise to return the favor will generally get the job done.
  8. All you need now is Brad as a pace car.
  9. Also, check the distributor. Pop the cap and check the general condition. Do all of the parts move freely? A squirt or 2 of wd40 may do the trick.
  10. It kind of depends on what you want to spend and what you want it for. Basically, you'd probably want to look for a mid-90's Legacy with a 2.2 engine. Those are about the most bulletproof in recent years. They'll run well into the mid to upper 200k if prpoerly maintained. In the rustbelt, you should be able to snag one of those for a song, and learn the ways of the Subaru through it until you're comfortable to tackle something else. Good luck and welcome to the board.
  11. Welcome to the board. Look forward to your expertise. There are a couple of pretty clever people here, too.
  12. McBrat has published the differences between gen 1 and 2 multiple times. Try a search on it. There are 2 filters on the gas line - 1 by the tank underneath, and 1 under the hood in front of the driver. You might check the distributor to see if the weights in it move freely. If they are frozen or stiff, you may not be getting the spark you need at high speeds. A shot or 2 of wd40 may be your salvation.
  13. How do you know there are only 79 k on the motor?
  14. Well, if it was 300 miles round trip, and it was 3 hours there and 3 hours back, you were doing 50 miles per hour.
  15. I just like the simplicity of the ea81. I can figure out most of the problems associated with it.
  16. Thanks for the heads up. I'll check it out.
  17. Aren't there other variables (manifold, linkage,...) to make it work properly? Without those, the value is less.
  18. Another good score for Mick. If Brats were women, you'd indeed be the big Mac daddy.
  19. For durability, try ea-81 models. They're not much on speed, but you can beat them like a ( insert your favorite simile here).
  20. I guess I did word that rather strangely. Better this way: Dual range = good Single range= bad keep dual range.
