  1. Thanks Eric. I looked around at postings and pics of everyone's installs and couldn't find any other mention of this problem. I'll be back at it in the morning.
  2. I'm dropping the rear axle/torsion bar/differential to install the 3" lift and am watching the brake line get very tight. I've loosened the fold over keepers on the swing arms, but that doesn't seem to give any relief. I fear that if I lower the rear assembly low enough to put the blocks in I'll break the brake lines. Should I cut the L bracket that holds the brake lines to the body? Are they essential to brake operation? Any help is appreciated.
  3. All that glitters is no gold, and in your case, that metalflake has to be coming from somewhere. If you rig is in the 200k range, it's served well. You may want to start looking for a replacement, but run the thing until it pukes completely. Change the oil in it and run it like a Subaru - go out strong and kicking, not whimpering in a garage somewhere.
  4. Sure thing. If you need any specialty tools, I may not have them, but I've got the basics covered. Give me a call this afternoon/evening.
  5. AAA in Alaska means we'll get a tow truck to you sometime before the plow truck pushes you completely off the road, or just after the bears clean up the carcass, or about the time the mosquittoes draw the last drop of blood... Some stretches are so desolate a guy could sit there for a day without seeing someone go by, and then to get someone to stop in the middle of nowhere in a state with the most guns and alcoholics per capita than anywhere else in America?
  6. By the time you hear it howl like a banshee, it's too late. I've seen the hub so hot that the car had to be parked for hours before it could be worked on, and then, as others have said, the mess of getting the fused conglomerate parts out of the hub is more problem than its worth. Sit tight and enjoy your time off until it comes. You can always use my garage to work in if UAA has shut down by then.
  7. Eric, you really know how to kick those East coasters and Midwesterners where it really hurts. I just hope they don't retaliate by showing you some fantastic purchase of a couple of 360's.
  8. Rent a sawzall, buy some butchering blades for it, borrow a BFH, drill out the rims and go to town on the wheel wells and fenders of the Brat. Cut like crazy and hammer like hell.
  9. I agree with Zap about the Swampers. There have been many raves about them as well as a couple of write-ups. I just bought some cheapy tires (4 new Dayton mud and snows -205/75/14 for $150 mounted and balanced) so I can see if I'm going to have any distinct wear problems with the new lift kit. Next year I will upgrade to some serious off road tires.
  10. IT'S HERE! IT'S HERE! After 11 days it has finally arrived and all of the parts made it unmolested. I've read through the instructions once already and fondled each piece in the box, laid them out and put them lovingly back in the box until this weekend. Thanks again Patrick.
  11. If you're not concerned with ground clearance, you might try looking at 4 wheeler tires and rims. They come in 12" sizes and have a very aggressive tread variety to choose from. You just couldn't use them on the street very well.
  12. So, will I be violating a time-honored creed if I drink pop or water in mine?
  13. From a pragmatic point of view, it would cost more to rebuild it than to replace it with another one from a J/Y. And the value of the parts sold individually would more than account for the purchase of a new one. My .02.
  14. This is nothing new. GM did the same thing with the Geo line: The Prism was a Toyota, the Storm was an Isuzu, and the (whatever the name of the little **itbox was) was a Suzuki. Anything for a buck.
  15. Tried Mystery Marvel oil - no help. Ended up taking the engine apart to physically clean out all of the ports by hand. Ran arounf 500.
  16. Just be careful snaking the door panel away from the door handle, and if you have electric windows/doorlocks... be aware of the connection there - limited wire length. It's not too difficult.
  17. I had a similar sounding problem once. Same clacking noise. Turned out there was some small foreign object (piece of plactic) that got caught in one of the oil portals in the engine and it was clogging up normal flow to one of the lifters, not allowing it to fill with oil. Expensive little problem.
  18. You're too far away for me to consider anything, but you might want to contact Miles Fox. He's nearby and always looking for another ride. Good luck with it.
  19. The site used to say estimated delivery date April 15th. Two days ago that disappeared. Itis reportedly on the truck and has been so since 8:45 P.M. on the 14th. All I can say is that is one damn slow truck driving the 32 miles from the Anchorage facility to my house.
  20. So the people at Fed Ex lied to me again. No lift This is now day 8 on a five day delivery, and I won't get it now until Monday. Why did I pay $70+ dollars for 5 day delivery and 4 lies today? PK, if you see this, ask for a refund, as I'm sure they aren't going to allow me to collect it. Maybe Monday.
  21. I was looking at a set of Coopers, but they were better than twice the price. So let's see what these will do and how they'll wear.
  22. Thanks Brian. I've received numerous tips, hints and suggestions from many of the local experts and I sure do appreciate them. I'm pumped for the arrival and will have all week to lay things out, envision the install, dream about it, ask myself questions, and wait for next weekend to put it in. Since BWM took his kit out of his Loyale and then scrapped it,I may very well be the only lifted Roo in AK (until Snowman gets his kit - soon).
  23. Fed Ex has "misplaced" my lift kit, but "promises" it will be here this afternoon (I guess they're going to produce one from somewhere?), so I just went to town and got a smoking deal on some tires for my Pugs - 205/75/14's Made by Dayton - I figured I'd go with cheap tires until I see if I'm going to have any wear or rub problems - $150 mounted and balanced for the whole set. They even have a decent tread design and look like they'd do halfway decent in the dirt. Things are starting to look up.
  24. I find this happens on all models of Subarus that I drive. I have the manual cruise control models, i.e.: my foot. It only seems to happen when the manual digit falls asleep. Corrective measures include getting out and walking around, twirling my foot in circles both clockwise and counterclockwise.....
