  1. Seriously, if it works for NV Zeno, it works, he's got a stack of license tabs on his plates about half an inch thick. You could always start with a semi-synthetic blend, but conventional wisdom is that synthetic is more likely to leak out of older seals. (this info seems to be somewhat dated though, as syn oils have improved dramatically over the last 10 years) Try Bob the oil guy, his site seems to have some good info.
  2. Guessing its a 90-94 leggo? the SMJ has wires that are important for proper engine function on both sides of the connector. so yes, keep both sides.

Since you've opened up the coolant system, I'll assume that the coolant is full, I know I need to "top off" when my heater only works when the engine is above idle. +1 on the OEM thermostat, I had a bad one out of the box for my EA a few years ago. Check to make sure the orientation is correct. Fuel econ is a bit low, check timing to make sure its correct, 20 deg BTDC with the test connectors plugged together. Overall how does the car feel for power?
  4. there is a pretty good junk yard off of 76 a couple of miles east of I5 in Carlsbad. On the right, heading east. Ecology auto parts. It's been 5 years since I've been there, but they were well stocked back then.
  5. Seriously? 16 lights? are you running drugs at night or is your car an emergency landing light platform. I'd be more worried about an amp draw draining your battery and keeping your car from starting. check for voltage at the switch, lights and most likely fuse, if 4 lights are on the same fuse you've probably blown it. There is nothing that would cause them to only work during the day and not at night, except if you see the sun reflected in the lights. Basic diagnostic skills will get you out of this one, check grounds connections and make sure you have a big enough fuse and wire going to your lights, you don't want to burn down your car.
  6. Good deal, I always try to check the easy and cheap stuff first, fuses, connections and switches. Its pretty amazing how many cars won't start simply because of a corroded terminal or a bad connection.
  7. I would imagine you'll want more engagement than that. Is this an EA or EJ 2 piece driveshaft? Maybe the "other" one would work? what is the difference in length of the EJ 5 speed and the EA 5 speed?
  8. On school buses it was determined that the need to get children off the bus quickly in a fire or roll over outweighed the need for seatbelts. The added mass of the bus means that short of an 18 wheeler they don't decelerate nearly as fast as a car would in the same accident so the peak G forces are much less, That combined with padded seat backs make them relatively safe. You'll notice the driver has a belt as he or she doesn't have a seatback in front of them. As far as 5 point harnesses, the current 3 point harnesses are an improvement over the 2 point, its a compromise between convenience and safety. Current seatbelts will snug the buckle end about 4-8 inches to get you in a good position for airbag deployment in an impact/rollover. The retractor end uses pyrotechnics to retract any loose webbing back into the retractor assembly, further minimizing motion and getting the occupant into a good position for airbag deployment. You have to pander to the dumbest crowd, one click and you're in, I'd say most people are not smart enough to click, click, click a 5 pt harness, realistically a 4 point might work but it adds an increasing level of complication that the latte sucking, text messaging masses could not comprehend.

You're worried about her taking an airbag to the face. Would you rather her take a windshield to the face? Having your head go through a windshield in an accident and suddenly have your head go the other way is like a Chinese finger trap, except that its a very quick, and very painful, bloody way to die.

As a former airbag and seatbelt engineer I can assure you that your 4 8 grandma was taken into consideration when your airbag was designed, if you really love your grandma leave your car as it is designed, by the experts. If she is going fast enough to get hurt by an airbag deployoing I can assure you she would be injured much more by the steering wheel or the windshield.

  12. razor is the way to go, like you are shaving, just be careful and don't push too hard or it will scratch, tempered glass is softer than "regular" glass. acetone, or brake cleaner might to the trick as well.

  14. there are small inspection holes on the front of the timing belt covers, shine a flashlight in the hole and have someone else crank the motor, Be careful of moving parts!!!!! But yeah, that's what I'm thinking too.
  15. how is the belt tension? could just be that the belt is loose.
  16. Jack the front wheels off the ground and turn the wheel back and forth, you may be able to "feel" what the issue is.

  18. This is extreme, and I don't think anyone in their right mind has ever done this, so take it with a grain of salt I'm just spitballing and think it would be interesting. If you were to add a second heater core to your system, say in your spare tire area and add a vent into the hood and a fan to blow across it you would increase your cooling capacity maybe 10-20% maybe?
  19. The best subaru is the Fuji Rabbit hands down, gets near 100 mpg, and because it only has two wheels it has some sex appeal that the Justy is sorely lacking. Best combination of econ and comfort would probably be a 92-94 FWD impreza with the 1.8, if you baby it you should be able to get low 30's if you do mostly highway oh, and check out hypermilers, I get about 29-30 on my 94 leggo wagon and i'm just learning their techniques.
  20. the timing marks should be on the flex plate, also both cams up on the EJ's the plastic backing will have marks for the timing. There is a tooth count between the gears, don't recall off the top of my head, but someone here will
  21. could use a tune up, plugs cap wires fuel filter x2, there is one near the engine and one near the tank rotor Seafoam can help (search for that one) make sure timing is correct, I believe the correct spec is 8 deg BTDC, but i'm not 100% on that one Tune the carb, unfortunately they seem to be a foreign language to most mechanics these days, but there are 3 basic screws, idle, primary and secondary, someone else will be able to chime in with more help there though. Get rid of the 600 pounds of bricks in the back seat?
  22. What GD is trying to say Make sure your radiator is up to snuff. Check the coolant, if its old or not close to 50/50 (all water) that will cause it to run hot. If its never been done, a new thermostat is never a bad idea, its a relatively quick and easy job, especially while you are changing the coolant.
  23. I'm confused, you say your car isn't overheating but you want a bigger fan? If its on all the time it could be a bad temp sensor. Periods and commas make sentences easier to read.
