If you can't wait search the "Off Road" forum, who'd of thunk? Near the top there is a sticky that covers everything from bumpers to wheels, lifts and tires, and everything in between.

Moustache Bars - who bends them?
NoahDL88 replied to Matty B's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Could be a slow death, could be when you least expect it, i'd at least hammer it flat, as close to what it was as you can. -
Biggest wheels on subaru brat w/o lift..?

also your springs will make a heck of a difference, if there fresh you will be able to get away with more, and if there weak, then the tires might rub. -
Ignorance is bliss, the extra 15 pounds on a 2500-3000 pound car dosn't seem worth the risk, if you are that worried skip the twinkies and date an olsen twin.

the better transmission aside, you can get the power of the STi from a WRX fairly easily, in about 3 steps 1. Up pipe 2. Down pipe 3. ECU reflash the intercooler should be fine, the intake is already more than adequate, the only parts i'm not sure on is the turbo and the injectors. BTW, this is only for the 2006, with the 2.5 block, the 2.0 block will take some more work.

There are a few guys that have the lifted rigs with the 27 inch SSR's that have strengthened their bars. i think just about every one that's gone bigger has out of necessity. I have a spare bar, and as soon as i can get some bread together, i'm definately gonna strengthen the bottom with some 90 degree channel, so that it can also slope over rocks better. -
The box tube that you and www.ozified.com use is steel, which is much stronger than ally, i was refering to using ally box, that seems it would be too weak to withstand hard offroading.
-
I think solid ally would be better for strength then an open rectangular box. thats just my .02 though.

you can cut corners with a stereo, but don't cut corners when it comes to important things like wheels. The price of a set of pug wheels shouldn't be too bad, and if the difference in price between the spare rims and the pug rims is too much, then you won't have the money for tires either eh?

Buddy, it seems like you're asking if we think you should keep your car for the same reason you want to get rid of it, you're looking for respect. i believe its the Marines that say respect is earned and never given. The people that like you better because you have a nicer car are not the people that will be there when you need them. I went to school 4 years for Auto related majors, i'm only in contact with 2 guys that were in my auto program, the rest don't know squat about cars. My point... the guys that were so caught up with what car i drove, i found i couldn't count on, the ones that didn't care, i've been mudding with, driven across the country multiple times with, squatted with when i was homeless and so on. The only person's opinion that matters about if you are "cool" is you, and if you're feeling really down, call up your parents, they have to like you.

Most people do, if its a street rig, a water proof box will be fine, but if you plan on offroading at all, its best to get it in the cab where it can be dryer and safer.

A stock EA-82 tranny's crawl ratio is about 22, most "real" offroaders have a crawl ratio of somewhere between 40-70.

Ok..so what can i do to an EA82
NoahDL88 replied to EA82Loyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Asking how hard it is to put in an EJ in an EA powered car is asking how hard is it to land a plane, for some people its an easy weekend job, for some its down right impossible, if you can change your own oil you're on the right track, if you know what a FSM and a DVOM is you should be able to figure out the wiring. -
I'm certainly excited that someone else wants to get these in country, but i asked this very same question about 6 months ago and only 2 people even thought they might want one. the only way to make them some what cheap is the shipping coordinating. I'd certainly want one if you could get them here. As for the low range, its 1.19:1 like the RX, the adapter and custom driveshaft is cheaper for the money.

Snowman, how'd you get the Leg rad to fit? got any pictures, i'd rather use that then the EA-82 one. As far as the swap, Do a search, then if you have any questions feel free to ask. there are a few threads that the information has been condensed into a very clear and concise format.

My XT is making a funny sound

Would a "tick" more describe your noise? Or is it more a rattle? -
Where's all my coolant going??
NoahDL88 replied to Numbchux's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
there is a really small hose that goes from the bottom of the intake to the top of the block, it could be that one is leaking. -
Punctuation. It can be your friend. It makes questions easier to answer. the XT6 is a sports coupe, so while its an EA-82 body, and there are lift kits for it, it still won't have as good approach and departure angles as the sedan or wagon. It has springs all around, and if it is a 6, it won't be turbo, only the XT-turbo's came with a.... wait for it..... a turbo. I believe these came with only AWD, and a center locking diff, while this is better than an open diff, the lack of a low range will make running bigger tires an issue. In the snow you'll be fine, but remember, AWD does not help you stop any faster.

I also have some TWB bits on my car, 2 bumpers and a roof rack, i couldn't be happier. A+++

If your friend has the EA-81, first off, there is no timing chain, its gear to gear. second, its a step back, its a cam in block, not OHC, the ports are smaller, and if its anything like the USDM EA-81's if its a 5 speed its 2wd. You'll need to do a complete wiring harness swap, which at that point, as i said in my previous post, get the EJ adapter plate, and an EJ engine, the EJ 18 has more power than the turbo, the EJ22 seems to be the most popular and over here has 135-145 horsepower, or an EJ25 160-170 horsepower. -

For less than 100 bucks, you won't get much more than 5 horsepower, downhill, with a tail wind. If you really want to go faster, i'd start with somthing with more than a 90 horsepower engine, in a race between a horse and a slug, which would you rather hotrod? if you put some money (2-3 grand USD) and time into it you can get up to about 150 horsepower, but for the money spent on custom bits, you can get an adapter plate and your choice of EJ engines, with a cart full of bolt on go fast bits. -
My wiring just goes to the front of the roof rack and goes down the A pillar, to a set of relays under the hood, i'm gonna see about cleaning it up and running it through the rack, or getting that plastic conduit and some zip ties.
