Might Have Lucked Out, Finally
sregor13 replied to the_bard's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you do take the Car, I would donate a least some amount of money to the ACS. The work they do is important. The other thing is to bad you live in NY, the DMV laws are the strictest I have ever seen. Not sure of all the details but keep this in mind. The note may be a rouse to thwart the Police- It may be full of contraband or lord knows what. I wouldn't mess with it, knowing how the police are in new York. They seem to have little forgiveness for people who appear to be jacking a car. I only speak from my recent experience with buying a legacy in New York. Not to mention all the hassle of getting this car registered in Ney York and getting keys made for it ( Probably $100 maybe more jut for the keys) There are some great Legacies out there in New York for cheap. I would find one on Ebay or Craigslist and forget about this one until the owner actually calls you. maybe I am just paranoid, but I woudnt go messing aroun inside the car unless you got someone watching for the fuzz. Not worth a night in any New York Jail. BTW- Maybe some folks over in the Newer Generation of Subaru's Message board could give you some insight as to how to get into this car should you decide to lay it on the line. This was a Legacy right? Not a Loyale? Either way good luck getting rid of the cougar and getting a Sube... Thanks -
I just purchased a 94 Legacy Wagon from Ney York and ran into a ton of problems with getting it back here. Some of which were due to the car others were due to New York excessively strict DMV Laws. I wanted to ask Folks to evaulate the value of this car. Knowing that most of the Folks on this board are enthusiasts, so assume you were like me and sick of fixing rusted out 80's GL and DL Sube's. Assume this car runs very well- It is a 94 Subaru Legacy Wagon LS Silver Moonroof CD/Tape AWD AC Air Suspension- assume it works 111,000 Miles Excellent Interior Two minor dents on exterior A very small bit of rust beginning on passenger rear wheel well. Keep in in mind I live in Wyoming. I know a car out East may be worthless or worth very little. But I simply could not find any 93-94 Legacies with less than 160,000 Miles.

It had been stated in this post ( I think) There have been several. Anyways it had been stated that the official word from SOA that there were negative implications. i.e. Only in low speeds and so on. cant quote verbatim..........but yea. I liked Al Smokemcrack's idea better than just SOA says so. I still don't know what the Binding is caused by and why Figure 8's fix anything. Specualtion is great. I am just trying to understand the process. I was just skeptical that you can not drive with the Fuse in. Because I fully intend to put a switch on my Dash and use it like I would the old pushbutton 4WD Subarus. Otherwise I read new tires new oil? What kind of oil would that be? Thanks

Got amps? GM Alternators! (pics and part#'s added)
sregor13 replied to RavenTBK's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I am with you on this one. I have AC on all my EA's. I am curious about how it will fit. I might just try it out soon, becasue i just lost my alternator in my 85 Subaru. Anyone else have AC and has done any kind of swap? Thanks -
Thanks guys for your input. Josh was the one to originally recomend the conventional struts. I think the added info is great as well. The air suspension was working when the Crank Sensor went out and the was just sitting for about a year. So, once the car gets to Strictly hopefully they eill be able to get it converted over to regular suspension. The guy I sent ot get this car said the Air Ride Light was blinking. So hopefully this problem is not the compressor and the airbags etc.

Okay, I see, I jsut bought a 94 but have not seen it yet. Aggghhhhhh But anyways, that's cool. I personally wouldn't do it, but a few of my friends have put in those RF Controlled Disk Changers. They are cheap and easy. They just run of your radio signal. That is of course if you can get the radio to work with the tape being stuck. I also once got a stuck tape out and put in a Tape with the Stereo Mini cord used for Discmans. Good luck again. Would a 94 Stereo fit into your Car? I might get rid of the stock one from mine once I get the car. But I was told mine had a CD/Tape. Let me know. Thanks, gabe

The air suspension on this Legacy I just bought is not working. The compressor wont come on and I am not going to be able to fix it myself. I had the car towed from Long Island to a shop in Denver called Strictly Automotive. For the record- The guys at Strictly know Subaru's very well and they are quite simply the best Subaru shop I have ever seen or heard of. I highly recommend them to anyone in the Colorado area. Anyway, back to my question. I want to have the Air Suspension fixed. I think it might be a sensor or something keeping the compressor from coming on but it might be the case that the compressor is shot. It will be expensive to fix the Air Suspension and I have seen many people on this board recommend replacing it with conventional struts. I want to fix it despite the costs. Is it possible for these guys at strictly to replace the malfuntioning components of the Air Suspension be it ie. Airbags, O-rings , Compressors, Solenoids, sensors etc. I mean I think it would rule to have control over the hieght of my enviroment. So, am I crazy? For example, I got into a 2001 Legacy a while back and was very dissapointed by how low it was to the ground. I had no clearance and AWD. It is like a contradiction of terms. So I would like the opinion of any USMB user who cares to share there opinion on my Air Suspension dilemna and/or my mental health. Thanks, Gabriel

I have not seen this for myself because the car I bought is currently on its way from New York to Colorado. But my buddy says that the Sunroof Moonroof would not open. It would not slide or raise up. It made noise but woud not function. Does anyone know hwat makes these things run? Is there a belt or a chain in there? Thanks

As for the Question, I would attempt to retrieve the tape with some Butter Knives or hemostats sp? Anyways, also think about what you make an hour. becasue it might not be worth your time. I replaced my Deck in my 90 legacy and then sold the stock deck for 1 dollar on Ebay. The guy had to pay 11 bucks for shipping but it worked great. So if you can't get it fixed then I would not hesitate replacing it. Can't remember the user who sugggested it but Crutchfield is the absolute best for you to buy a new deck from, simply because they will supply the oversize Storage case and wiring harness for free. Not that asked where to buy a Stereo. The only reason I mention Crutchfield is becasue they have the best online Database for verifying that any given audio product will fit. They offer Lifetime Tech Support. They also handle sales for Sony Direct Car Stereo's. But to mention I know you have a Legacy, and there are no known problems I can think off. But I think some Folks might assume that all Decks are the same and if they fit then they fit. But I had a GL that I coudnt fit a Kenwood Deck into- meaning that Crutchfields Site said it would not fit. I installed it anyways, becasue it seemed to fit just fine. Well sure enough a few months later the Amp in the Deck fried. This was because the heat sink was pressed directly against the Subaru Heater Duct and the heat was uanble to dissipate. Thus frying the Amp. The point I am trying to make is that even if you dont want to buy a Deck from Crutchfield at least use there online resource to find a Deck that will fit. This is a moot point for you if you go over to CD, becasue I already know that all Modern CD Decks fit in the Legacy. I might just go with an Ipod or a Discman and the Aux in on your Deck.

How many miles in a row have you driven since the Fluid Change? Have you driven over 100 Miles on the interstate? I was just curious because everytime I think I have my binding issue is resolved it simply returns to haunt me. After months with no problems it will rear its ugly head. As far as the Gas Mileage thing goes I am convinced mine gets better gas mileage in the FWD Mode. There is less resistance. But it is a small difference of about 15-20 Miles per tank. Could be wrong but I take a consistent route. And on the Subject of Risks driving in FWD Mode- What scientific explaination is there to believe that it would damage anything? Isn't there someone out there can explain what could be damaged? Good Luck with you car I hope your problem is solved so I can have hope that mine is. But, until then I will be driving my Loyale in FWD Mode. Thanks, Gabe

In searching it looks as if the Speedometer Sensor may be tied to the Air Shock Sensor. I dont know where this sensor is? But that is half my problem. AS far as the Idle I have experienced it before in what was diagnosed a Injector 1. But I suppose there is probably an Idle Control Sensor as well. This car had not run for quite some time do to a Crank Sensor. That was replaced and the Car did start but then the Air Ride was not working. So thanks for replying. I appreciate any thoughts on this one becasue my buddy is stranded in Long Island.

I didnt get any reponse on my Air Shocks thread so i am trying to simplify. I just bought a 94 Legacy. The compressor for the air shocks does not come and the car can not be driven back from New York. The car bounces extremely on every little bump. Is there anything I can do to keep this car from bucking around? Is there a way to manually engage the Air Shocks or something just to get this Drivable for 2000 Miles? Thanks
-
I will try to get the part number but I dont think I will be able t. The Sensor was from my 90 Legacy L Wagon AWD, and every source I checked said it was the same part number for the 90 L and the 94 LS. So I am not sure where things went awry. The Subaru Dealership did not honor my request to give the old sensor back to my buddy. ( not surprised )

I guess I will reply to my own thread if there are no objections- The Air Shock issue is causing my Subaru to bounce at the slighest bump. This bouncing is causing the car to be unable to drive. Leaving my friend stranded in Long Island. Also for some reason the car is not keeping idle. So driving down the interstate, he encounters a problem where if he lets off the Gas to slow down the idle drops and the car dies. Im desperate, Thanks

The 94 Legacy Wagon I just bought apparently is having trouble with the Air Shocks. The seller said those worked before the Crank Sensor went out ( A seperate issue and thread) It has been sitting for a While, and now the Air Shocks wont fire up. Also the Gas Guage is not working. Does it sound like thiis might be a Fuse? Thanks

Okay , the car is running. I had it towed over to Metric Subaru in long Island and they are claiming that it was indeed the wrong sensor. They put one in and it would not start becasue the Drill had damaged the Cog in the Crank Case Like Josh ( I think it was Josh?) said would happen if he drilled in there. They manage to weld that and get the car going. So thanks tro all for troubleshooting. A am a little perplexed now becasue 10 Sources in addition to everyone on this board have all said it is the same sensor for all 90-94. Now I have Metric Suabru telling me that it isnt so. I will find out once the gets back here what is the truth about this sensor. Thanks again. I am starting a new post on this car called Air Shocks and Gas Gauge on 94 Legacy Wagon LS.

I was finally able to find the Earlier thread on this Subject with seemingly undispusted proof that driving in FWD wont damage your Tranny. I also think this would be a good one for you as it does go into the Binding Issue. The thread is called AWD into FWD only? and there are about 30 replies to it.

Yes I have confirmed that it was the crank sensor. Smack in the middle below the Alternator. I had the car towed over to Metric Subaru in Long Island. The sad thing there is the mechanic there said that if my guys couldnt get the sensor to fit then he wouldnt be able to. I did talk with Greg from Strictly Auto down in Denver who agreed with my theory that the outer shell from the Old Sensor. So I hope that Metric Subaru will have mercy and help me solve this this for a reasonable price. Thanks to everyone who posted.
