  1. That car is worth alot more than 500 Dollars IMO. I hate to say it, but I would keep it. If nothing else, save it for later and keep the rust away. That is classic car and would be a great gift for a niece or daughter. Anyone living in Montana or Wyoming would benefit from that beastly beaut. I dont know what the problem is with you current engine, but if it is posssible to put in the EA82 or even an EA82 Turbo then you would have plenty of power. My EA82 Turbo rips, I mean rips. I can go up Mountain Passes no problem. If you were in Wyoming I would sell you an EA82 for 100 Dollars. Just hang on to it and periodically snoop around for an engine. Once you get that done get some buddys to help you put it in or trade some computer knowledge to a gear head for help. Then give it to someone you love. I do think it is a girls car though.
  2. I had this happen twice because of loose wires on the back side of the alternator, or rather corroded wires. I assume it is not this sort of problem, but is worth checking out. Funny thing is that is was a 87 GL Wagon. Question is (is yours a Turbo?) Also throw a dash of Seafoam in the Gas Tank and Crankcase to see if there is any improvement.
  3. After you remove the Cam Sprocket the next thing there is I think is referred to by some as the "cam seal housing". The cam seal goes in the front of it,(the housing that is) and the cam o-ring goes on the back side of this thing. That is as far as I went. Hope that helps
  4. If you do the Water Pump Oil Pump and Seals, which I recommend, then get a tube of Blue RTV Sealant, If you buy a Water Pump then it should come with the O-Ring for the coolant tube. Otherwise, get the cam seals and the orings that go on the back off the camseal housing. Both of the Oil Pump Seals (one is a mickey mouse seal) and the Crankshaft seal itself. It is not worth doing the timing belts if this is not done at the same time IMO. Just because it saves a lot of redundant labor later. if you do the seals you may want a Seal Puller and a Gasket Scraper. You can use a screwdriver with tape on the end in a pinch for the Seal puller. As for the Gasket Scraper, I dont know because I just bought one to make sure that was done right. Otherwise I think all was covered. Oh yea get plenty of RTV on the Water Pump, both sides of the Gasket. Thanks
  5. First off, is it a Turbo? I had the same problem. I replaced the Oil Pump Seals, the Cam Seals the Crank shaft seals. I also found oil leaking from beneath the turbo, there is a tube that carries oil I think to cool of the turbo not sure. Anyways the car does not leak any 10W out of it now. It was leaking like a siv. My car is leaking 90W from the differential though. This is getting onto the Cat and smoking. I think that is the only thing causing it to smoke. I hope. I will watch this thread to see if you figure out you figure out your problem. It took about $100 and about 12hours for me to replace of of the abpve mentioned seals the water pump and the timing belts. I know I am slower than most. It was well worth it.
  6. I am thinking it is the Carb. The clutch is currently out on this ride so anyhow. Thanks
  7. Upon closer inspection I discovered that it was an AC line rattling below where the spare tire goes. Thanks
  8. Hi I just converted and refilled the AC on my Loyale in hopes that I would get cold air. I didnt. The compressor is making a funny noise. I want to put the compressor out of my 87 GL in there. How do I discharge the AC in my current system so that I can remove the Compressor? Thanks
  9. Well all I did was replace the thermostat and Gasket and have not seen any moe coolant leaking. Hope it does not return. Thanks!
  10. Like Brighton said " Crutchfield " Go to there website and click "What fits my Car?"
  11. I removed the heat shield just behind the Flywheel. Didnt change the noise. But there may be more than that one. Could it be something to do with the Transmission? Thanks
  12. My Loyale just started making a vibration noise at 1500 RPM. It goes away about 1600 or 1700. Wierd. Anyways I cant identify it. Please let me know what you think it might be. Exhaust? Thanks
  13. Please share your thoughts on the best year of EA82. I like the 86 but 87 seems like the best. All the Loyale are good but seem to basic. I am looking for a good Turbo GL Wagon. I want to get a year worth fixing up and for longevity. Thanks
  14. I now have a coolant leak from somewhere below the Turbo.. It is something Metal that has some lines coming off of it. It is almost directly below the Turbo and may be part of the engine itself. It a little bit in front of the Flywheel. It has some coolant lines that head back toward the cab of the car. Doea anyone know what this thing is called? iut appears to be leaking on the bottom side of this thing. Thanks
  15. Coolant leak previously mentioned is now fixed. Starting a new thread about a new coolant leak. Somewhere below the Turbo.
  16. i just did this on my Loyale and make sure to gob your metal Tube going into the waterpump with RTV Sealant. The O-ring alone was not enough for me. I just gobbed the bad boy with RTV and seems to be fine now. Tha nks
  17. Should I replace it or something? The rerason I ask is it is about 120 Miles from any kind of Auto Parts store or anything. I have it parked out at the Gas Field where I work. Thanks
  18. I took it out and gooped it with some RTV Sealant then reinsterted. I also took out the top two bolts and gobed them with RTV as well. I know it was leaking from the tube but it may also be leaking from the bottom of the water pump. ( I cant see down there) So I hope not. The other thing is that water started spraying out from the Thermostat. Do I need to replace that Gasket. Or is that something that happens when a car overheats? Thanks
  19. The other day the AC/Heater Fan in my Impreza starting making this horrible rattling noise. It only does it on the two highest speeds. You can feel the Vibration just below the glove box. Can anyone take a stab at what the problem might be and how to fix it? Thanks
  20. I just replaced my Water Pump and Water appears to be gushing from the Tube that comes out the side. I did replace the O-ring but it almost looks like the leak is coming from the metal itself. To the right of the metal lip just outside of where the tube goes into the Water Pump. Does anyone here have a recommendation for fixing this. Should I try to replace that metal tube or is there something else I can try? Thanks
  21. That is possible, considering there was nothing left of the seal. I took sone needle nose and pull the metal ring out with great hassle. I then put in the new seal. It worked fine. Unfortunatly, I broke the Cam Seal Retainer, when I put it back in. The O-Ring I used was to thick and I torqued it down to hard on the to big O-ring. Resusting in breakage. I wonder what the proper size O-ring is? Thanks
  22. I just pulled of the Camshaft Seal Retainer- Two Bolts. I am supposed to be able to pull out the old seal and put a new one in. The only problem is that there really isnt an old one to speak off. There was at one point because the spring was in there and such. Unfortunatly there is no way to put a new one in. There is a little metal plate where the Seal Should be. The plate has this green looking gunk around the outside edge. Clearly this is not something Haynes has seen becasue there was no note about this and there is nothing in the picture. Does anyone know if there was a difference in Camshaft Seals for the 90 Loyale Turbo and the rest of the EA82 Engines? Thanks
  23. The clutch on my 85 Gl was just replaced. The Clutch Cable then broke and the guy who was driving the car put a regular cable in there- non OEM. So anyways the rocker arm the the cable attaches to is sorta flopping around loose. The car will go into all gears without puching in the clutch except it wont go into reverse. it seems like the rocker arm became disconnected from whatever engages and disengages the clutch. is there a way to fix this without pulling the engine again? Thanks
