  1. I dont know if building one is cost effective right now. If you want to buy one new or used check out those Drawtite's they looked pretty cheap.
  2. I am using Firefox and I got to your site just fine. Maybe it is an older version of Mozilla that casued this. Shadyirishman- That username is awesome!
  3. I think the OBW Wagon is the worst car band for the buck Subaru has ever offered to date. You are justified in questioning if it is worth the money. In my opinion it is not. Does someone here think that Subaru's are made in Japan? VW's are German Engineered. Just like Subaru's are Japanese engineered. I dont know about VW, but Subaru's are assembled in Mexico and North America. Also saw someone say something about German's with regard to Electronics. They make some of the best electronics available. I dont know about there automotive. But they certainly make some of the worlds greatest electronics. No reason to bash the Jetta. Why dont we compare the 05 Passat Wagon to the 05 Outback Wagon? I know the original post was referring to comparing a 01 OBW to an 01 Jetta but I would like to see a blow by blow comparision of the Passat Wagon verses the 05 OBW. I really like both, I think this 05 has ended my 6 year hatred for Outback Wagons. It finally is looking a little more like the Suabru's I fell in love with. How does it match up spec wise.
  4. I have never seen a 05 anything, but I would guess there is no Aux on the Front of the Deck. A nice feature in my 90 Legacy. Anyway there may be some sort of AUX through the Back. It would take 10-15 Minutes to pull the Deck and look at the back. You may be able to go Via the Changer Feature if it does have one. As far as the Ipod Radio thing. It is limted that you cant control your ipod through the Deck. There are several diifernt Radio Broadcast unit available so maybe the one Sipperphoto could be upgraded. Both Alpine and Pioneer have some up eith Ipod Interface Receivers. I would highly consider getting an aftermarket deck. Check out http://www.crutchfield.com If y
  5. The way we tested is with a thermosat, it is digital and you jut point it at each bearing after driving down the road a few miles. The bad wheel bearing will show a higher temp. If the temp are all the same on each Wheel the it is likely to not be a bearing. of course we happen to have a Thermostat that is like point and shoot. You may not have one, see if ytou can borrow one. Good Luck, G
  6. I got the same problem going on in my 94 Legacy. I would pull the Codes and look for some sort of sensor code. Otherwise, does it start fine after it dies?
  7. All battery's in the states are 12 Volt. At least for past few decades anyway. I don't know if they do Zones on Cd's like DVD's. I dont think so. So theoretically you could get a changer here. Just take a Pic of the plug or count the Pins and draw a picture if you cant get a good shot. I personally would ditch the stock deck. But maybe a Clarion is worth keeping in there. International shipping is a pretty detailed event especially if you are shipping merchandise. I couldn't beleive how hard it was just to ship to Canada. So you may find it is cheaper to buy over there. Thanks
  8. Not sure they deliver to Ireland, but a common shop is 1stsubaruparts.com Not sure if I can put the link in here. But just do a google for first Subaru Parts. There seem to be very expensive though. If you have problems finding a place to ship you know money talks. If you cant find one then let me know.
  9. For the price of the Outback, I dont think owners should have to be shadetree mechanics to keep the head gasket from blowing. I have a 92 Acura Integra with 210,000 Miles on it and it still passes Colorado emissions with flying colors.. It runs like a champion. I paid $500 for it and its truly my most reliable car. My wife drives it. We had a Phase 1 Outback one upon a time. 97 Outback Legacy Wagon. It was doomed from the get go. Your 01 should run fine though. I think it is Phase 2, and I trust the problems with the Phase 1 were corrected. YES There were problems with the Phase 1. True story. There are worse thing to go then the Head Gasket. I have said it before and I will say it again. Subaru makes the greatest cars on the road. With that being said, I am not convinced that they make the most reliable.\ Thanks
  10. My 90 Loyale Wagon did the same thing. There were some tubes that go into the Turbo, that carry oil. Low pressure oil though, I think it helps cool the Turbo. Check directly under and you may see that the tubing used by Subaru is not rated for the extreme heat. The heat shielding may have worn off or been insufficent from the get go. You may need to pull the turbo comletely apart. I could be wrong about everything I said but I think that is the case. So my vote is the turbo. I would also make a plan to replace the Water Pump and all the seals in that area. Might take a couple hours but you might have bigger problems if you dont just take car of it. Thanks
  11. When is the last time you changed the timing belt? Maybe it is getting a little worn. I took me a day to find the Specs in Chiltons for my 85 Wagon. I honestly dont know how the marks are supposed to line up. But I know somwhere deep in the Chilton's the exact Specs should be listed. Have a buddy help so you don't get shocked again. Also on one of my older GLs the Rotor cap didnt have anything keeping it from getting spun around. Some of those you can only put it on one way. Idiot proof, but on 85 I had that thing all cockeyed. So hope you can get something from this. Dont rule out Spark Plug wires and Spark Plugs if you havn't checked those yet. Thanks
  12. Caboobaroo, if you are still in Laramie let me know what they are asking in town and I will see what price I can get you over at The House of Glass in Cheyenne. I sometimes get deals over there because the owner is Family. If nothing else he is very dependable and honest.
  13. "All fuses under the hood, and under the dash check out fine. " Does that include the Fusible Links. If yes then how did you test the links? Also have you done any electrical work in your Car. Car Stereo or anything? Even if no then there could a be a Ground Fault in you Head Unit. Maybe, anyway just an idea. Thanks
  14. dklien90 gave some great advice. If you can afford it then I would wait a while. Meanwhile considering something else. You may already know this but the Forester is kinda a cramped ride as it is. If you have driven the Forester and you like the style then wait and get one with less miles. $3000 is a really good price. I have tried to sell Cars in the past and I know how hard it is. She may just want to get rid of it. I know a few Folks who let cars go for much less than KBB just because that is what it is worth to them. I just put a clutch in my 85 Wagon got it running great and gave it away. I no longer needed it but I didn't want to give it away until is was fixed. So maybe this girl has a similar philosophy. Oh and thanks to Nixon for his insults.
  15. I am curious as to what the problem has been diagnosed as. Is it an electrical problem, a computer problem or, a mechanical problem with the tranny itself. Not sure if this is similar to the 4EAT Tranny and I know nothing about tranny's. Is it possible that is could be one of the Solenoids? I know my 4EAT has at least one Duty Solenoid. Does anyone know what causes Trannies to shift late? Also how is the tread on your tires? I am just wondering if this might be a problem with the Center Differential- not sure if your car has one. Mine does. I have problems like the one you are having. Try putting it into FWD (should be a 15AMp Fuse under the hood) and seeing if anything changes. Everytime mine starts acting like yours is, I put it into FWD and it usually reset something in the tranny. I then put it back into AWD and it it runs fine for a while. This by far is no solution, but might help troubleshoot the actual cause. I agree that if I can ever afford it I probably wont buy a newer Subaru. I have heard a lot of Negative Feedback from once Loyal Sube Fans. As far as the rugged thing goes like we see in commercials I agree. I was driving down the street the other day behind a girl I know who was in a newer limited Outback. She hit a puddle on a residential street going 25MPH and the bottom mudgaurd or whatever the plastic thing is that covers the bottom of the car, fell of in the street in front of me. I was not surpised at all. I know she paid a lot for the car. I just don't think they make things like they used to. That goes for all things. I just wonder how much Subaru pays Folks to put them together. Do they still have that done in Mexico? I tihnk they can afford to buy you a new tranny. If not then they deserve to lose your business. See what your Wife thinks of those new AWD VW Jetta Wagon's with the W8 Cyl engine 280HP Engine. Maybe you could trade it in before it gets worse. Good Luck!
  16. $3000 is a pretty good price. Almost to good. The Car does have kinda high miles. The engine would be the least of my concerns. I would take it to a Shop and pay for a Full Checkout. All cars break down. I just find something I like, and know that I will be spending money to fix it. Especially a Subaru. I don't agree that they are the most reliable cars on the road and certainly are not the cheapest cars to repair. I do think they are the best on the road though. If you like everything else about it Color, Options , Etc, then I would get it regardless of our opinions. Thanks
  17. I was reluctant to teach my nephew how to drive a manual with that Hill Holder. I want him to know how it really is to be on a steep hill and need to use the clutch and gas to keep you steady. of course there is always the impromtu Hill Holder called the E-Brake. Either way I am concerned about it sticking just a tad because the adjustment is kinda touchy. Thanks
  18. I used to haul around full sheets of plywood in my Subaru GL. I could alsmost shut the gate. I am positive a 6 Foot ladder would fit in a GL. I also can haul 10 Ft Conduit. Probably would fit into Legacy, but you may have to put the passenger front seat forward a bit. I would rule out the Forester as an option. They just dont have much space. I might consider finding a 86-or 87 Gl Wagon with a 1.8 litre Engine that has low miles and dumping a bunch of money into it. These make great tools cars and get good gas mileage. Just a thought.
  19. I had this happen but it never went away. I dont know if this is what people on the board call the tick of death but it might be worth doing a search on. Mine never went away. I got it quiter by throwing in some Motor Honey but it nearly seized my Engine. I am serious, it was almost gone. Use that stuff at your own risk. But of course this is before I heard of Seafoam. I stand by that stuff. It is never a waste of Money putting in Seafoam. Worth a shot even if it does not make the Click go away. Thanks
  20. From the first post all the way through I thought warped heads or cracked block. Glad to hear it was the Water Pump. Your luck is clearly better than mine. Hope it stays that way. If you get the chance maybe you should have the compression checked just to make sure. Thanks
