  1. As far as I could tell my car was on its original cable... 271,500 miles (approx) and 16 years of abuse... not a bad life.... especially considering the car sees a couple of high RPM launches a month
  2. Got a speaker to replace my blown passenger dash one with??? Only being able to have the radio at 25% of its max volume or so makes for a boring drive in the Brat
  3. Sweet, its like a 4WD subaru 360 pickup with more power, and new(er) I'd roll in one Needs a lift kit and some ATV mud tires on it
  4. Ummm you really should install that other bolt as the cable can pivot a bit. My secret to get it in there right was to have one of the bolts ALMOST tightened up then run the bolt through the little bracket towards the 2nd hole while kinda jiggling it. Once it popped through it threaded right in to the nut on the mount on the firewall. That was the most difficult part though. Took me about 1/3 of the time trying to get the pedal and cable bolted up properly. And its not exactly easy to get my upper body under the dash either
  5. Well for those who didn't notice my signature over the past 2 days, the clutch cable in my 87 GL finally snapped. I got it towed home (AAA rules ). This morning I decided to install my ~ $17 genuine subaru clutch cable that I picked up yesterday. No way I was gonna be crawling around under the dash out in the street so I had to move the car with the starter in 2nd gear to get it moving... stupid hyundai was in my way when I pulled in the complex so I had to ride up on the curb a bit (hey I didnt want to stop) Anyway I got into a safe guest spot and started pulling parts. 1.25 hours later its done and the clutch is actually adjusted better than it has been in the past 5 years That 1.25 hours included pulling the lower half of the dash, removing the old cable, installing the new one (getting the 2 bolts that hold in the cable bracket is hard ) and reinstalling the dash and spare tire and adjusting everything to work right. The clutch feels SOOO much better now. 1 hour 15 minutes isnt bad for someone who has never messed with a clutch mechanism before
  6. True true about it getting picked clean if we all knew about it... I know a secret place in the gorge with a woodgrain EA82 wagon He he, you have 666 post count right now
  7. And if his tailgate isnt challenge enough... try to rebuild the black gate off my brat. #1 Missing emblems and trim #2 Dented #3 Rusty on bottom #4 Missing 2 of 3 interior covers #5 Broken latch Anyone who can successfully rebuild my gate = a subaru miracle worker
  8. If you have never dealt with a lift before it would probably be simpler and safer to buy one. Once you figure out exactly how they work fabbing your own can work... but after you get all the parts plated and get all the bolts and stuff and spend all the time making stuff... its probably easier just to buy the kit from PK Davis
  9. I'm tempted to bring the BRAT down and pick up my rear discs... and leave some rims to be drilled... not sure about my schedule yet though. Not sure if the BRAT can make it that far either (since I haven't even given the engine any attention since I got it other than topping off the oil and chaning the alternator). Definite caravan would be needed to make sure the rust bucket made it I am 50% sure I can make it at this point... need to discuss it with the Pink Martini
  10. Which yard did you go to? It would be nice to get lots O spares for that cheap. It would be nice to sell the off roader brat with some extra CV's since we all know they like to break off road I DO have cargo pockets on my junkyard shorts... want me to pick you up a dome light too rick?
  11. ok thanks Brian... looks I am going to U-Pull-It tomorrow for a dome light
  12. Ok I know that you can use a domelight from an EA82 on an EA81 wagon or something... but do they fit in brats too? Has anyone done it? I dont even know how to get the dome light out of my brat... its not like a normal light, it has a little spotlight that shines forward and a bit opening in the back as a cargo lamp with a little disk you can rotate to shade the bed. I didnt see it listed in the USRM or on Brians page... where did it disappear to?
  13. I think john said the engine has 110 HP or something... thats only 5 shy of an EA82T Brat cams = more torque as far as I understand
  14. Hmmmm my voltmeter jumps on my 87 GL when I hit the turn signal.... Maybe thats why I have eaten 3 alternators in the past year Gotta love lifetime free replacement I just had the battery fluids topped off too, it seems to be a little more consistent voltage now.
  15. Well first off... if you are losing coolant find out where first. It is possible the car was overheating cause it was low on coolant. I got my EA82 double row radiators from Radiator.com
  16. Those wimpy looking plastic push bars for foresters available from the dealer here are like $450 I hardly see how they could be worth even $100
  17. glad to hear everyone came out ok... and that the wagon is still serving you well
  18. Good job, I couldnt stick around, my roommates needed me to haul a loveseat back here in the Brat (its first mission ever) I did get to see afew of your runs though, you were going nice and fast I find it funny that people throw all sorts of money into fancy rally cars and a more or less stock impreza with good tires can beat em. Same with hood river... I ran open class there and the only subarus that beat me were RS's and a legacy, all the WRX's were behind my 5th place finish How's that for 90 HP? Truck/SUV results: 1st Place: Luke E. 1981 BRAT 2nd Place: Eric Rachner 198? BRAT 3rd Place: Jason 1976 wagon 4th Place: Me 5th Place: Hooribly humiliated Durango owner
  19. and the rear ones are back in the compartment where you access the taillight blubs
  20. I recommend John in Eugene OR (Mudrat) He just opened a shop and should be able to do all sorts of metal work
  21. Used webers go from $30 up usually. If they dont need a rebuild and are already set up for a subaru they are wortha bit more. If they are off an unknown vehicle and need a rebuild and rejetting, no more than $50 in my opinion. Sounds as is yours is in decent shape. I would hold onto it and stick it on the EA81 though.
  22. make sure all 4 drainage lines are cleaned out. Also with the roof open clean the area where the seal goes, cleaning the seals themselves helps too. Hopefully one or all of those things will work.
  23. Not a clue myself.... check this evening after more people get on. I can yank an engine and take it apart and get it back together... but I dont know the first thing about brakes :cornfuzz:
