Bolting heads on EA81...dumb question
Flowmastered87GL replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I ran into that... I got lucky and was able to borrow a factory one from a local independent shop -
Difficulty in replacing an '87 GL windshield?
Flowmastered87GL replied to ghost's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I brand new one should be pretty cheap. I only spent $170 "friend price" for a NEW OEM windsheild for my Baja... don't see how a GL could be more. I think my GL windshield was only $150 "retail" 7-8 years ago. -
So now I have a Toyota (my 2nd one too!)
Flowmastered87GL replied to obk25xt's topic in Non-Soob Off Roading
From an investment standpoint, the truck is a good buy too. I swear these trucks have not depreciated at all over the last few years. Hell even the later model toyota RV's seem to be holding their value. -

Nice, nothing was wrong with the 1st truck, but I like this one better -

^^ Those rampage and S-10 almost look like McDonalds happy meal stomper toys. But maybe its just the angle... If they are powered they are stompers, if they are not they are the happy meal toy. I have the brat from that happy meal line I think its white with a blue stripe. :-p -
which wheels fit what?
Flowmastered87GL replied to noob2soob22's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you want bigger wheels you could: - Find some Peugeot 14 or 15 inch wheels also known as "pugs" (make sure you avoid the dreaded metric "390" wheels - Drill out some 6 lug toyota wheels to fit your 4 lug (2 holes fit, 2 new holes must be drilled between the other 4 of the stock holes you are not using) - Buy some allied armnament wheels if you can find a set. -
Wow that Pete is HUGE. Not my taste as it seems horribly impractical But thats the point... my 8x8 isn't practical for anything besides fun trail runs and moving beer around the campground. Here is another picture of my suspension mocked up today. lower half of the 4 link installed. Upper links not fabbed yet.

FML - Tranny issue?
Flowmastered87GL replied to 92_rugby_subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The GL had a terrible 2nd gear when I bought it. The gear oil looked like grey poupon (really). This was around 217K Just put in some normal 80W90 bulk gear oil and the issue went away in a week. The tranny was still going strong at 321K. I would just throw some normal gear oil in there and see what happens. -
50$ 86 GL Dead Tranny?
Flowmastered87GL replied to chaseman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Interesting to see someone from The Dalles on here... I grew up there and took my 87 GL out all sorts of places... out Mill Creek Rd. til a fallen tree blocked the road, all the way out 3 mile road, to road 44 til I hit Highway 35, etc.... If you think the tranny is ok, I would stick it back in and see if it moves in 4WD. Now... it COULD be a clutch issue too though... my 82 brat with a brand new clutch for some reason would not move. Swapped it to an 83+ clutch and it was fine. Never figured out the reason it would not move. My money is on a stripped front hub though. -

Can you get the ipikes in 185??? 185/70/R13 is really the proper size for a 4WD GL I personally run blizzaks, but have heard good things about the ipikes -

front wheel drive doesn't work!!
Flowmastered87GL replied to Skysm182's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
On my GL my entire CV joint was spinning, but the car was not moving. In my case the axle nut was "loose" Actually the washers on the axle nut had been installed wrong, or just worn down, either way insufficient pressure was applied and the wheel hub stripped. A junkyard hub (and a lesson on how to properly put the washers... sorry I don't remember how they go, but the "flat" one really is slightly convex) and some new washers and it ran many more miles. -
Salvage titles for minor damage! Argh!!!
Flowmastered87GL replied to Red92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Guess it varies state by state. My GL was hit in 2003 or so and I swapped the slightly dented bumper ($30-35) and kicked the fender and you could not tell anything had happened. (unless you looked behind the bumper, the support under the headlight had like 1/4 inch of compression done to it) Insurance said the damage was $1200, i think they gave me $750 for the car and I bought it back for $45 I forget if I had to have it inspected at all. I think they just branded the title is all. (I still have the registration) I think if they did inspect it, they checked the VIN, and that the horn and lights worked and nothing was hanging off. -
Anyone want to get a FREE VIN check?
Flowmastered87GL replied to Idasho's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Plus its not 100% accurate. My brat which is in a junkard now shows up as still 100% legit. Seems something really should be said on there when it was checked into the junkyard. And another one of my cars shows a mileage stamp of 200,000 when I did DEQ on it, and it was really around 222K -

Exceeding mechanicanical limits should be ona 5 digit odometer. Not sure why they claimed it on your legacy, unless they put in a new gauge package when they repaired it and just checked the over mechanical limit box. -

My GL does not work (as its been in Subaru heaven since 2005) But it looks like my 91 legacy with lots of miles is still running and in Kelso WA Interesting... my 82 brat which is now in a junkyard says NOTHING about being there. Says its all legit still :-p Looks like my 88 GL is in Washoughal WA now.. I think it has like 318K on it. Looks like my 92 Loyale failed DEQ alot My other 82 brat which went up to Oak Harbor is now down in Deer Island OR -

I tried two sites and it said it only works for vehicles in current dealer inventory. So maybe the hole was exposed and fixed -
I figure I will run the lower profile "trials" bed on it for crawling. I don't care about traction when I have the beer cooler on the back. Just payload. Given that I expect the truck to weigh like 12 pounds I figure the beer will weigh about the same as the truck. Hopefully doable as long as I don't turn too fast.
