Talking about how to improved MPG?
Flowmastered87GL replied to Suba_GL_87's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I just got some Bridgestone Ecopia tires... reviews on the internet said some people are getting slightly better mileage. And they are marketed as a high efficiency tire. Though... some of that may be attributed to gentler driving due to the new tires... I know I will be taking turns slower now so I dont wear out my nice new set... my old ones I could have cared less about. -
Tie Rod Part Numbers

You may be able to see if Richie (Superior Import Repair) has any in stock. He is probably cheaper than the dealer. If you go that route I could probably bring the parts to you (assuming I could get off work early enough to make it to the shop before it closed and you could find a way to get him the money) -
Help on a few things
Flowmastered87GL replied to 92_rugby_subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I would not use steel wool on the wheels (if they are chrome) I tried that on my calmasters and it kinda scratched them a bit. It DID get the rust off though. -
As soon as I get off work (in Forest Grove) I will drive home, shower, load up the baja and head off ASAP. I may be willing to meet up with a crew in Washougal or Camrump roast or something. But the time is totally up in the air. It could be early as 2 if my work helps me out on my route, or as late as 8PM if I have issues at work + traffic on the way out.

The EGR valve is likely fine. The EGR light is programmed to come on every 60K. So it probably came on at 120k-ish. Swap some connectors under the dash (try searcing the old school forum for the exact set to swap) and the light goes away. If you have not got it yet, make sure you check out the frame rails and rear shock towers/fenders for rust before you do get it.

want to change to DOT-5
Flowmastered87GL replied to soobie_newbie67's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ya, I think something else needs to be done other than brake fluid. Maybe change pad materials, or better yet swap in a dual range tranny. They can be had for like $50 bucks if you keep your eyes open. You would have to change to a 3:90 rear diff to match too. -

Once you do a frankenmotor though you should not need remote start as IMO modern cars do not need to warm up. I am often backing out of my parking space as the airbag test light is turning off (about 8 seconds) I have some customers on my glass route (brand new ford flex) who let their car warm up for like 10+ minutes. I can only wonder how much gas they are wasting. It would probably warm up if they just got in it cold and drove it 1/4 mile. My baja can reach operating temp between my parking garage and the freeway. And thats NOT far. -
I used to run 20W50 in my car. I was told that it would lower the MPG slightly too. It probably did because I never really got good mileage in that car. Even after I installed a weber.

Used Subaru help!
Flowmastered87GL replied to subby31's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
I'd walk (maybe even run). There are plenty of good subarus out there that aren't hacked together. Aftermarket parts < Genuine Subaru parts. Say if it has a new fender, its probably thinner metal. "could" effect crash worthiness. Maybe the front bumper cover has been fixed, but what about the foam under it??? -
Rust, Should I buy it?
Flowmastered87GL replied to willd's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
In my opinion, no, there are so many rust free cars really not that far away from you (OR and WA) -
How much tight on timing belt?
Flowmastered87GL replied to Suba_GL_87's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hmm yes I agree that the tensioner will put the proper amount of tension against the belt, but you are supposed to torque the cam pully LEFT to X ft/lbs first THEN tighten down the tensioner bolts while the belt is preloaded. I think its in the 10-18ft/lbs range, consult your HTKYSA manual -
