Alternator Problem.........
Flowmastered87GL replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
sounds like my GL way back... ya... I used the proper gear to keep the voltmeter around 14V... though I dont think a DL has a voltmeter does it?? My $$ is on the alternator. Either get a good used one off a friend here or if you go to a parts store spring for the lifetime warranty... Autozone hated me.... I think I got a new one every 6 months or so. -
I bought a 92 Legacy sport
Flowmastered87GL replied to wplocal's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Its a fairly rare car.... desirable for sure... as long as its not beat to hell you could probably sell it for a profit once you are done with it. But be aware we are all cheapskates here -
FINALLY!! found the one I've been looking for.

Get an ice scraper Its not a permanant solution, but would work til you get the wiring figure out (or swap in manual windows)

Currently accepting advice on a 1990 Loyale
Flowmastered87GL replied to 211's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The Loyale has an EA82 (or EA82T) If its in decent shape to me $600 seems a little steep unless all the other stuff has been done recently besides the clutch. If you get this car I would consider doing: Clutch All oil seals Timing belts Water pump Oil pump reseal Timing belt pullies The timing belts must be done religiously every 60K (if they even make it that long... if they break they dont hurt the engine, but it ruins your day) -

I vote 86.... The rear bumper is all black (unless its a DL bumper or something) but I dont see much definition between the upper and lower part of the bumper. Compare it to the RX bumper on this page too. -

The cost of maintaining your soob
Flowmastered87GL replied to mackdiesel's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Most of us do it ourselves So parts + our time Uhhh on my Baja I think my major tune up was like $250 but I did some of it myself. my big BIG one with the timing belt and stuff will probably be more like $400-500 I bet I always do the simple parts like plugs and air filter and stuff unless I am just really lazy. -

Flowmastered87GL replied to WASHroad's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'd try em out. It looks like they should fit and give you a slight lift. I only have personal experience with Blizzaks and studs (personally I prefer the blizzaks) I imagine these should handle similar, though I seem to recall these have bits of walnut in them for traction and rely a little less on the rubber compound / pattern for traction. -
Pics as promised...

Hopefully the previous owner was smart enough to save the LONGEST spark plug wire and not the shortest -

If the handle is just spinning I am guessing one of 2 things is wrong. A: The plastic handle is stripped and just spinning on the metal axle thingie B: The gear on the metal axle thingie or the gear teeth on the big arm that moves the window up and down is stripped. If you glass is good you won't need to grab that from the junkyard. Quite honestly you could basically learn the whole procedure from the removal process. Just reverse it to put it back in. Its been like 6 years since I did one but, I think you carefully pull the armrest and window crank (make sure it works first though!!) then if you want you could pull the door handle and latch junk out of the way. I forget if its necessary (as I was swapping door skins) Roll down the window a bit til you can see the bolts that hold the glass to the regulator. Undo them carefully. Then raise the glass back up and prop it with something. Or take off the door trim outside and just pull the glass up and out. Remember if you break stuff in the junkyard who cares... its a learning process so you dont break YOUR car. Then I think you can roll the regulator down and unbolt it. Wiggle it around and carefully pass it out through one of the holes in the door. Save all the bolts for it (put them back in their respective spots on the regulator once its out... its always good to have spares) You will want to only look at a regulator on a sedan or wagon. A hatch or brat would have a different one (longer) Keep in mind admission is $2 so it would help if you knew if one was there in the yard before you went in. You should not need much more for this process besides a few screwdrivers, pliers, and typical subaru wrenches / sockets. (IE 10, 12, and maybe 14 or 17 MM) -

You mentioned needing a window to go up and down. A trip to u-pull it (maybe ask around and see if anyone has seen EA81's there) and grabbing a whole window regulator out of a door would probably be the easiest way to make your window work again. Swapping the innards of a door is not THAT hard. I'm happy to help with that, but I don't have alot of free time. -
FUEL FILTER question
Flowmastered87GL replied to 92_rugby_subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You may want to climb under there and follow the fuel lines just to check that the one with the out arrow does indeed lead up to the engine since you mentioned the old filter not having an arrow. Or did you mean it did not have an arrow on the first side you undid?? When I used to change my fuel filter on my GL I used a set of vise grips wrapped 5-7 times with electrical tape. Let me pinch off the line but not damage it (only make it tight enough to stop flow, not crush the hose) -
