  1. If you get your alternator at Autozone... GET A LIFETIME WARRANTY. (my GL went through em like a fat kid eating candy... mmm candy) Or... consider asking Richie at Superior Import Repair www.fixmysuby.com if he has any used ones cheap. (or anyone else local) Hopefully once you get a proper charge coming from the alternator the battery will be ok. At least since you are a 5 speed you can get it rolling and pop the clutch in 2nd if needed. And on the tires, since you are FWD yes you could mismatch tires to some extent. Say a pair of toyos on the front and good years on the back or something would work. I would still try to keep them the same size all around and the same brand/wear on each end of the car. If you look at a used tire place... sometimes they really aren't that good a deal. say each tire is $10, but then you gotta mount and balance, disposal fee... ya $100 later you have a set of used tires with half or less of their life left. Someone on here may have a set of 4 lug tires/wheels with a good set of tires for less than that, or sometimes tires in 13" size go on sale for like $19 each plus mount and balance. Not a heck of a lot more for brand new tires (with a warranty too if they are from les schwab)
  2. 185/70R13 is the stock size on an EA82 (yes I know yours is EA81) 4WD. I would run either that or 175/70R13 (which I think is stock 2WD) I have run 185/80R13's on a 4WD GL and they looked good, but may look kinda funny on a low 2WD.
  3. These cars pretty much predate hidden breakable clips. take out any screws you can see. Now take out any you cant see If the surround still doesn't come off keep taking out screws that look like they may hold it. Some may be hidden in seams where the dash meets (at least on EA82's some were hidden) You may need a short screwdriver as you may need to get to the ones up above the gauges (the blade of the screwdriver will be pointing up to the sky and the handle will be hitting the steering column probably)
  4. personally I wouldn't hack up the front of the car to install a 3rd eye. They are better suited to wheelers in my opinion. You really shouldn't be using them during daily driving anyway.
  5. Nice... ya the added tach is not stock But if you wanted a genuine tach you would have to swap the whole dash pretty much I think. You should be able to get well over 30 MPG once you get the car maintained right. Maybe over 40 if you baby it on a level highway at 55, behind a truck Like GD said, you can use what you learn from this car, to build a 4x4 beater wagon or something later. Its missing the center emblem for the steering wheel too. But I like it... should be pretty reliable, too bad its not a GL though.
  6. I agree that I would not go over 500 pounds on an EA series vehicle. If you asked Subaru they would probably say they are not even designed to tow period. On like an early AWD legacy 5 speed I would maybe brave 1000 pounds, I think my baja is rated over 2000, but I would be scared getting up that high. It was slow enough just loaded with stuff ON BOARD to WCSS :-\ And driving a commercial truck.... I can say just because you can get it moving doesn't mean you can tow it. You have to be able to stop it and control it too. (I once drove to seattle with axle weights of 8700,15000,14000,13000,20000) front to rear, The back of the rear trailer was squirrelly as hell. Won't do that again with that much weight back there. And on the note of an RV, generally unless you use them ALOT they don't pay off. You have to buy them, register them insure them, maintain them, store them. Or just use a tent that fits in your closet
  7. Just sell it, no reason to let it depreciate plus pay storage. Sell it now and yes you will take a little hit on it, but you will make that back in the savings of storage and stuff. With what you save you could buy another new one when you get back. But shop around for dealers... maybe one will give more money than another.

  9. Ya just depends on what you prefer. I personally take the engine out as well to do the oil seals and such on it. If the engine is in good shape, no leaks fresh timing belt and such, then the transmission removal may be easier. Just depends what tools you have too. Back when I had a garage I could use I had an engine hoist, but no tranny jack, so going out the top was easier. If you have a tranny jack and no hoist... well going out the bottom may be easier.
  10. The door window glass (rear) will be different slightly. But I dont see why the body panels wont fit.
  11. since its designed for 2.0 to 3.0..... an EJ22 fits right in the butter zone

  13. More like needs attention, not broken since my Baja is still pretty new. Engine bay kinda smells now because all the dust from off roading coming back from WCSS is "baking" Small brush scratches on cladding need to be buffed out. Headlights could use a polish Gouge on fender flare needs to be sanded and touched up. Seat padding in passenger seat kinda mushed out of shape. When it gets bad enough, changing to leather and more cushion
  14. Another good upgrade... it helps hold the drivers carpet up too... a dead pedal / footrest. Just pull one from a GL
  15. Funny, I just saw him out on Greenberg Rd next to Washington square yesterday morning... the one with the "Boobies!" sticker right?
  16. This is just theory here.... Maybe the little dents in the posts on the headrests are held in place by a ball bearing with a stiff spring or something mounted inside the seat frame... Over time the springs kinda get crusty and then its harder to compress them and therefore move the headrest up and down. Again... this is just a THEORY of now they constructed it.

  18. I dont fully understand GD's electrical instructions either... but thats not because he explained it poorly, its because my electrical knowledge is rather simple... relays and such confuse me a bit I'm sure you could find some info on it on howstuffworks.com or something maybe??
