  1. who has a pic of brians red hatch with the black and red rims??? that proves the combo looks good!
  2. yes there are LOTS of us on here from the northwest If interested, the west coast subaru show is coming up in August, good place to meet people, get parts, and get some really neat ideas.
  3. i saw a white RS once.... I think it was a non-turbo. I was like whats the point as I had previously looked at an 87 RX with 55K on it (now that was a fun test drive)
  4. as long as its not rusty, its a decent buy if it runs good. Parts are plentiful in the northwest, though you may have a harder time in texas finding parts. Though you have us up here to ship you stuff
  5. afew guesses on the trailer. Search google for: Casita, Scamp, Tab (or t@b), teardrop and one of them will probably pop something up.
  6. I have had 2 brats... But I have had 2 86 GL's 1 86 GL-10, and 87 GL, and 87 GL-10, 2 88 GL's and a loyale... maybe more, its hard to remember them all. So I voted EA82 wagon / sedan
  7. if you know where to look you can get the transmission stuff for $100 or so. Its the fabbing and labor at the mechanic that is going to be expensive. Though you may be able to sell off your old transmission to recoup some of your cost. Keep in mind that your donor transmission will likely have 220,000+ miles and you will be asking it to run double the horsepower it was designed with. The GL has 84-90 HP and the forester has around 165 Not saying it wont work, its just some stuff to be aware of. I got 321K out of my transmission on my 87 GL and sold it (the tranny) for $50 when the engine finally blew on the car. And it had a hard life and it shifted better than when I got the car 100K earlier. I would not be surprised if you had to pay well over $1000 to make this conversion work. Unless you have a good mechanic friend who works for beer
  8. a 5 speed dual range from an 80's GL has been put in a forester before. There are other makers here on the board of adapter plates. I forget who though :-\ If you pull a transmission from a GL I would say to grab all the shifter linkage with it as well just to be safe. A non-turbo will have lower (better) gearing than a turbo tranny.
  9. since I have many local dealers to choose from I usually just look at several of these online sites and take the best number to my dealer and see if they can match it, or come darn close. They recognize me enough to know not to even quote me retail
  10. I guess we will find out in 10+ years. If they all disappear like the justy CVT then they failed. If they are still around like all the 5 speed dual ranges out there then they succeeded.
  11. I have a non turbo baja 5 speed. Love it. Keep in mine its more or less mechanically identical to your 2000 outback. Negatives are it only seats 4 and i am scared to haul more than 1200 pounds with it (ya i know thats overloading it as is)
  12. i think its neat, but the wheels and color dont seem right. Maybe if it was black with tint and alloys Just wheels alone may work too
  13. But he has an EA82, the floor pans are shaped different.
  14. someone has to say it I wanna see this lifted XT
  15. im not speaking out of experience since I have never had a locked diff (on a non RC car anyway) but I know that on the EA series vehicles, some people have had ok luck with dual e-brake handles so they can put some resistance on the spinning front tire.
  16. You dont, but its way easier to access stuff in there if you do. Good time to flush the coolant too since you SHOULD be taking care of the oil pump, water pump and oil seals while doing the timing belts on these.
  17. man thats sticky... glad the last road I went down that said impassable wasnt like that
  18. loose drain plugs happen, but they shouldnt. I check mine no less than 3 times. I double and triple check my lug nuts too after changing tires. the dealer once overfilled my moms 96 OBS back when it was new. I checked it before leaving fortunately and it was OVER the MAX OIL LEVEL tick mark. I made em drain the extra back out. They washed the car for the trouble
  19. Yes a hybrid would be nice.... my freightliner has some digital (ok only volts, miles and hours and diagnostics) and the rest analog, but its still neat to know i am exactly at 14.0 volts When are these showing up at dealers? My baja is due for a recall ECU reflash... so while its in there I may drive one
  20. over all nice... but why...... an MPG guage where the ENGINE TEMPERATURE guage should be Come on, you already cut the guage from the non turbo impreza and i think? all foresters Such a move may end up in a lot less 200K plus subarus... you cant see the temperature starting to sneak up and do something about it before the red light comes on. If I ever get a new subaru... first order of business is having rallitek install a REAL temp guage
  21. I really like your "realfern" paintjob
  22. since its not turbo, I'd buy it
  23. just a note on hours billed. SOME shops bill the same, say 12 hours for a head gasket, whether it takes them 5 hours or 20. You know, stubborn bolt here, socket down the intake there I have found most of the independent shops are pretty fair about either working longer and charging you just what the book says, or if its a super easy fix making it cheaper, or if its some easy fix, free if you are a good customer (not saying you will get a free head gasket swap, but they may replace your plug wires free or something...)
  24. once this is done you need to build a matching Tamiya bruiser / mountaineer chassis with a brat body to match
