Flowmastered87GL replied to 1bignose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
also, pull the outer covers and make sure the new belts havnt jumped or broken. Its a free thing to check and doesnt take long. -
clutch throw out bearing return spring
Flowmastered87GL replied to hancho3's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
half the time when I tear open a clutch housing those little clips are missing or broken. The car drove more or less fine before. However.... its worth the few bucks to get 2 new ones at the dealer before putting it all back together. Dont try and make one out of a paperclip... just spend the money -

I'll give you $400 for it (think about it... double your money for nothing!) Sweet find though -
I got another BRAT, only 12.50
Flowmastered87GL replied to bheinen74's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
looks like it only has the single range tranny though :-\ (those who had em new back in the day knows SOME stompers had a high and a low setting) Still always fun to find these -
For those that dont wheel (I know the baja wont see any "trails") There is still stuff to do. Like was said earlier, most people are open to having passengers, if you dont ride along with someone else there are plenty of dirt roads to explore at low speeds in stock rigs, or just socialization / cooking / eating / drinking at the campsite, or once it gets dark joining the 6 star club I am sure I would have fun if I spent 2 days there and never even saw a trail (as long as there were people floating around to talk to endlessly about subarus)

My opinion, keep it west of the mountains. Somewhere north of vancouver, but south of say Mt Vernon (ya I know thats like a 220 mile stretch)

My GL had something somewhat similar to this happen. This is what it was for me: I went to start the car one day. Once it started the horn sounded and wouldnt stop. I had to pull the headlights to find the problem. The wiring to the horns had rubbed through and was touching the body metal and grounding to it. So it had chafed for the last 230k or so (at the time) and starting it that day was enough to finally tear through. I cut out the bad section, spliced in fresh wire and insulated the connections.

I would agree... $50 (plus or minus $50) is generally the going rate around here (so free if you get lucky to 100 maybe if you paid a bit too much)

'86 Brat EGR Light Reset Question
Flowmastered87GL replied to casm's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
once you move them, just leave em that way til the light comes on again (if ever) then switch it back at that point. I dont think that the light on these was ever actually tied to the valve... i have heard many times that it was just tied to the mileage. -
'82 Brat: Solid Axle Build *** DONE! :) ***
Flowmastered87GL replied to mcbrat's topic in Members Rides
Looks sweet... from the early pics I was afraid the front axle was going to be too far forward.... but it looks perfect -
Re-Blacking Wiper Blade Arms
Flowmastered87GL replied to Subarule's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I used krylon gloss black on both my GL and my legacy. Sand the parts (be it wiper arms which you remove first) or pillars and trim which you just mask off, prime them, then paint them with a couple of light smooth coats. -
if the car is still drivable and you think you could nurse it down to portland. Try calling Richie at Superior Import Repair here in portland. I dont know what he charges for a head gasket off the top of my head, but a friend of mine had her outback done there and it was less than that. www.fixmysuby.com is their website (contact info there) He goes by Richierich on the board. (Richie is the owners name) They are more about making customers happy than bending people over like a dealership will try to do.

Crashed Dl buying :)
Flowmastered87GL replied to Caramanos2000's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i'm sure you could make it ok for under $1000, but that particular car is probably not worth it. yes the mileage is low, but it still probably could use timing belts and a water pump just due to age. plus it has some rust and needs the body work. and its a DL and auto... dont get me started on how bad the 3 speed autos are -
