Quickie Engine Stand
Flowmastered87GL replied to cap86's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Donut spares work good too -
Well I am driving my brat around a little bit. It runs pretty good when you are driving it, but its idle is lumpy like it has a huge cam in it or something (which it doesnt) Its in the shop now being diagnosed... it seemed to run better with 2 of the plug wires removed. Richie's dad thinks maybe the lifters (which we just adjusted in my garage a while ago) were adjusted too tight or something on that side. Timing is pretty close to being on, choke is hooked up and working right. What else could it be? The weber is pretty new.... the thing that is confusing me the most though is that it runs better on JUST 2 of the cylinders (just the 2 drivers side ones I think)

Goodbye old friend
Flowmastered87GL replied to Flowmastered87GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Fixed. Ya I know it will get re-incarnated... when the steel is recycled... maybe she will become part of an STi or a rally car or something -
A very hard thing to do today.... After owning it since fall of 1997, I had to put my 87 (yes the flowmastered one) to death.... We took it to the steel scrapper today after taking off all the useful items of value. I purchased her with 215,850 or so miles in high school. The timing belts broke 2 weeks later. Ok fixed it. Found out the engine was bad. Changed it with a JDM block. All is fine, but the hitachi carb never worked quite right. Changed it to a weber. All along the car was continuously getting modded for performance. Fun car. Got my through MANY seasons of rallycross, 1.5 years of delivering pizza (which I left in July), High school and 6 years of college, and WCSS3,5 and 6. She died with 321,7XX or so miles (the guages are in the garage, I'd have to check) and a Totaled / Reconstructed title, something wrong in the engine, shot suspension, no carpet, some wiring issues.... Still though... it was hard to see the wrecker guy put the forklift through the window 9 years I had that car. Yes I love my baja, but I still miss that car. I need to pour a 40 on the curb for it

LOLO PASS Cruise! Sun Oct.16
Flowmastered87GL replied to scoobyclimbs's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Your car looks so naked underneath... you need a BIG ol skidplate to complement the mudrat bumper  -
those imported low mile motors??
Flowmastered87GL replied to oddcomp's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My 87 GL had an engine from "Foreign Engines" in the Nickel Ads. Got it back at 215K... as you all know the car made it to 321K before dying. Blew a head gasket on the way, but only because I delivered pizza with it and that is super hard on cars. On-Off-On-Off...... So in other words it was a GREAT engine! -
WOW! 1975 w/ 38k!
Flowmastered87GL replied to lastchance's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Funny, I JUST saw it. -
I need to make a little printout for my brat.... rolling along at 17 MPH feels pretty fast in neighborhoods... dunno how fast I'm going, but it would be nice to know. My tires are 28" or so if anyone knows how far off that is.

wheel coming off?
Flowmastered87GL replied to Rebello240zx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just because the roll pin is there doesnt mean the nut is tight. Try yanking the pin and torquing up the nut. I managed to strip out a hub and have my nut loosen several times with a good cotter pin in place at all times. The cone washer wearing down and maybe the bearings seating is probably what caused my problem. -
wheel coming off?
Flowmastered87GL replied to Rebello240zx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My guess is you have a loose axle nut. I've had mine come loose afew times. I never really found a solution because my engine blew up first, but I think it helps if you have GOOD cone washers and lightly grease em too when you install them. They are like $7 each new. Or I can check my garage... I may have some lightly used ones I could sell really cheap. -
best way to synchronize my locks?
Flowmastered87GL replied to Spiffy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You can have the complete lockset to my 87 GL if you want. I have a copy key and the original submaster key for it. 321K on the lockset though -
Alternators w/ different pully's
Flowmastered87GL replied to patkennedy78's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ACtually... on EA82's The double pully is for the non-AC cars. My 87 GL had double belts going Crank, WP, Alt, PS. All the cars that had AC that I had, had one going Crank, Idler, AC, PS and a second one going Crank, Alt, AC, PS So the alternator only had 1 pully on it on outboard alternator / inboard AC cars. I dont know the story on the few inboard alt and outboard AC cars... -
1982 GL Brat with a 3 inch PK Davis lift and a 9" bobbed tail

Good: A very unique, reliable vehicle. Fun to drive too. Switchback bed and bed extender help with versitility. Seats its passengers in comfort. Bad: The bed is small and the switchback opening is kinda small. The studs on the rear license plate mount need to be cut off and drilled out if you want to run a thick vanity frame (like my college alumni one). AND... it also only seats 4 people. Overall, if you dont need to carry plywood and dont need 5 seats... get it. IF you need to carry stuff. Get a small trailer for it. If you need to carry more people. Get an outback or Tribeca

acura brakes on a GEN 1
Flowmastered87GL replied to tailgatewagon's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
So... I wonder if that means that performance brakes for an acura can be adapted to a gen 1??? -
You mean the 3.0 liter flat six from the outback? That would probably be easier than a V6. YOu would still have to do some re-wiring and stuff though.
-
what do you think......
Flowmastered87GL replied to tailgatewagon's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Gen 1 hatch? Sweet Looks like the white pac man is about to eat the car though -
I had an autozone in my 87GL. I replaced it several times. Failures: Voltage regulator Pully/bearings (wobbly pully on it) Voltage regulator Stripped pully Voltage regulator So usually the volts would go up and down with the RPM's or something similar. Once the shaft was so bad that the little fan thing on it was rubbing the housing making a terrible noise... had to get a ride into town to change it (fortunately coming from a rally and had Jason following me) Decent alternator... but get the lifetime warranty. You will need it.

Superior Import Repair on NE 82nd and Prescott. Richierich from here runs the shop and I find his prices to be reasonable and the expertise between him and his dad (a master subaru tech) is very good. (503)288-8634 is their phone #. They are there tuesday-saturday. PS if you need a new battery I will sell you my used optima red top from my GL (afew months old, the car blew an engine so the battery is good) for $50.

Uhhh ya it appears you put in power steering fluid rather than ATF. What I would do personally is just try to get as much of it out of there as possible and cycle ATF back into the system. Use a turkey baster or something to suck the PS fluid out. It may be fine, I had a loyale that I found some PS fluid in... I can only assume that was what was running in the PS system.
