1991 Subaru Loyal 4wd wagon
Flowmastered87GL replied to les benton's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If your car shows warm on the highway and not warm in town... in most cases that means that the radiator is on its way out. -
Need some Brat help
Flowmastered87GL replied to filter's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Depends.... if rust is common in your area and the rockers and frame are rustfree, then it may be worth like $4000 or so in your area. If rust is NOT common (such as here in oregon) bed rust drops the value... maybe $1000 for it because of the rust... with rust and more miles... like $500 (say 150K and afew holes) Brat prices are all relative though... supply and demand changes them alot. Rust areas to watch for: Rear wheel wells, front of bed, rear of bed (especially if muffler is missing!) rocker panels, firewall. -
I remember that.... back when you lived in Milwaukie.... we joked about it being the rickshaw brat

New Subaru radio in older GL , head aches!
Flowmastered87GL replied to FirstSubaruGLwagon's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
I had an Impreza tape deck in my GL. what I did is alter the mounting brackets so the stereo sat as far back as possible (I think I drilled new holes a little back) My stereo sticks out about 1 inch. I enlarged the cutout from the black surround til it fit over the stereo. I then pulled it back off. I wrapped the unit (where you can see metal.... the non-black parts I guess you could say) with electrical tape. Make the tape smooth and put the seam at the bottom, put the surround back on and you cant even tell. I had it that way for YEARS and no one ever said it looked bad or anything. -
weeeee! back to old school!
Flowmastered87GL replied to JonOfScio's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sweet, back old schoolin it! Hard to go back after you leave... though it IS nice to have a car you dont have to park selectively in a parking lot. (I parked the GL next to a crooked SUV AND the shopping carts... I didnt care) -
Think I found my dream daily driver Sube
Flowmastered87GL replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I think its kinda sweet.... different to see a pink baja. I like my Regal Blue Pearl personally though... I think pink would be too fruity for a straight 24 year old guy -
Newbie in WA lookin' for help :)
Flowmastered87GL replied to Luth's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
The EA81 is like 76 HP stock and the EA82 is like 84 HP stock I think. So with a weber carb and decent exhaust... not much difference (as both numbers will increase) -
Another gauge question...
Flowmastered87GL replied to Camelwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ya your car sounds normal... probably just a miscalibrated guage (over time) -
Another gauge question...
Flowmastered87GL replied to Camelwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
with a healthy alternator and battery I think it should be reading a big higher. My guage used to read like 13.5 on my GL when running. A voltmeter read 12.6 off the battery when parked. you may be able to get a free charging system test at autozone or schucks or something. I did that with my brat because the guage is slightly off.... it says 12 volts exact when I make a little more really. So either your guage could be off or something there is weak. as far as telling which one... get tested, its free. -
I sell cars... working with used cars (I sell new kias and all used cars) I have found that.... Impalas arent worth ANYTHING after they hit 36000 miles because the warranty is over. Subarus have a longer warranty... and are just better built... they hold value MUCH better. A subaru with 60K is probably worth more than the impala with 30 K I got to drive an impala on a test drive... hated it... big boat of a car that felt totally unrefined and years behind in technology and quality. Even Kia's seem better built Your mileage quote... I read it as the outback haveing better milage.... 22 versus 20?

Funny you mention that.... I always called it the "ugly blue" based on the website picture when I was picking out my Baja. I ended up with Regal Blue Pearl (dark blue) I do admit atlantic looks WAY better in the actual picture of your car... not ugly at all... but a photoshopped car on the website... well is ugly. Not sure WHY though... I think its just because its just that though... photoshoped. (seems it would be easier just to take a picture of one of each color.... but whatever...)

How do you read codes on an EA82 carbed
Flowmastered87GL replied to oldblue2's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If the car passes emissions otherwise... put black tape over the check engine lights... (all of em!) its worth a try A former co-worker of my wife's had some chrome tape over ALL her idiot lights when she bought her car... I pointed that out to her when I was adjusting the clutch... sure enough... the car had a check engine light on. -
Need yer help to identify gasket!!
Flowmastered87GL replied to erikvr's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes the O-ring is very important! Make sure to get a genuine subaru cam tower o-ring as they work better. -
So this beast was given to me... what to do?
Flowmastered87GL replied to Luth's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Keep it... or sell it as-is for like $500 to a board member. Its too sweet to part out though. -
Spare Tire on the top of the roll bar?
Flowmastered87GL replied to FlyB0y's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I dont have a roll bar in mine so I put my big ol spare in the right front corner of the bed standing upright... I use a bungee cord through the wheel holes to tie it to a tie down loop up there on the side of the bed. -
accell coil gone bad

Gas tank failure
Flowmastered87GL replied to WoodsWagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
where is Mason at? I am parting out my GL and I will sell you my old tank for $20 in Portland ORegon. I highly doubt I could ship it because of the nature of what it is and what it contained. -
I dont think the points expire... I have not noticed anything on the photocopy of the one that I redeemed that said otherwise. EDIT... sounds like discopete looked at one and said it expires.... so I would believe that. I would expect that you probably would have trouble stocking up enough to buy a whole new car with em if thats what you were thinking... $500 a year X lots of years = takes a LONG time to buy a suby. I plan to use my bucks in the future to get a trailer hitch, MAYBE sport activity lights and regular tune ups.
-
I have a subie card as well.... I used $100 of my subaru bucks as part of the down payment on my new Baja... future ones will got to 30 and 60K services and parts and stuff. There is a cap of $500 per year to get. Also the bucks have your name and address on them... so when you seem them on sale for $80 for a $100 check... be careful because the name wont match and they may void them. Richie... Shannon and I are getting a frequent flier card through rivermark credit union.. I dont know the APR really, its under 10% for sure though. One of these tuesdays I could probably bring the papers in with me after I find em in the files. Too bad I generally am petrified of flying... well of the sudden changes in altitude or bumps in bad weather anyway... when it smooth its all good.

Check the u-joints on your center driveshaft too... XSNRG can testify to how bad mine was in the GL -
"Rattle" in 87 GL
Flowmastered87GL replied to Flowmastered87GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
New driveshaft.... it already broke afew months ago The parting out is starting Tuesday.... probably gonna at least pull the heads off the engine to resell if they look good.... probably will just keep the engine (block) in the car as scrap weight. -
Arrgh...stupidity strikes again.
Flowmastered87GL replied to edrach's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had that happen in my driveway... another board member and I were changing an intake.... turns out we had a 1600 intake and it was too narrow -
Regarding location of fuel filters... On a loyale (SPFI and MPFI (including turbo) models) the fuel filter is right by the firewall on the drivers side. Personally when I disconnect the fuel lines I do it up at where they meet up with the throttle body/intake. Then once they are not full of fuel I pop em off the filter. For some reason I ALWAYS have trouble changing these underhood filters without cutting the line for some reason. (as in the nipple on the filter gets stuck in the hose, so I just cut off the last 1/4 inch) On carbed models the filter is down under the car above a plate hidden in front of the RR wheel. Those are cake to change... never had a problem EVER. Even in 32 degree weather.
